“Very disappointing.”
Reviewed September 5, 2009

I was transfixed by this lovely location when I arrived, but that enchantment quickly dissolved. Billed as a gorgeous getaway spot, I found it to be crawling with curiosity seekers checking out Willa Cather's cottage. Some famiies had taken over some of the cabins and the noise was very intrusive. To top it off the owner was extremely rude when some of my friends came to pay a visit. She would not allow them to join me for breakfast. I would never recommend this place or go back.

We have never stayed overnight at the Inn at Whale Cove/Cottages (we hope to in the future as we have seen the rooms and several cottages)...but we have dined twice in the restaurant (two separate trips to Grand Manan) and were absolutely amazed by the food. Chef Laura Buckley and her small staff all do a stellar job in the kitchen...they use fresh, seasonal, and local ingredients/vegetables/fish as well as fresh meat and chicken choices. The menu is diverse enough for any pallette, but there are nightly specials--which are intriguing. The ambience in the main house, where the restaurant is located is cozy, warm, and inviting---antiques, wide pine floors, fresh flowers, lots of light, and a view to the gorgeous perennial gardens. The service is impeccaple no matter what size in your party...first time there we were 6, the second time 4 and both times we were treated like royalty. Outside is breathtaking, with a particularly lovely view to the cove. You can find the evening's menu posted at Island Arts, a local gift shop (also terrific) near the ferry pier. Dining at the Inn at Whale Cove will be a positive experience you will remember forever! Reservations are highly recommended.

We have been regular visitors to Grand Manan for eleven years, and the Inn at Whale Cove was a place we have stayed before. Although our experience was never stellar, we returned for the absolutely beautiful view, and the nostalgic yesteryear atmosphere. After our last stay, we will not go back. The beds were terrible, hard and creaky, the bedding was thin (the room was cold), the toast at our breakfast was moldy on both sides, and the operator, Laura Buckley, was extremely rude and unprofessional.

Our 8th year. We started out staying for two weeks and now are up to six. It's a totally unique place. Great food. Real accommodations. In a world of plastic places to stay? This is the real thing.

I agree with the other reviewers, this is a charming place to stay with beautiful views over Whale Cove. The owner Laura Buckley is extremely gracious and accommodating. Some of the rooms (Quigley) however, though comfortable and quaintly furnished, are small and tightly configured and lack showers or spaces to hang or store clothes.

  • Liked — The views over Whale Cove
  • Disliked — The room lacked space to hang clothing and a shower.

We stayed in Sallys Attic for a week on Grand Manan.

The attic has a lovely view, though tall and clumsy guests (like myself) may find they clunk their head on occasion. The room was otherwise warm, spacious, clean and characterful.

All guest rooms and cottages have access to an open lawn area where you can sit, chill out and look out over whale cove, perhaps with a glass of wine..

The food here is excellent, breakfast being varied, tasty and filling and served up with some of the best bread I've ever tasted. Evening meals are biased towards seafood as you might expect from an Island like Grand Manan, but there was still always something to tempt a non-fish-fan, and every meal we had here was a good one.

Finally - service - I had an awkward overseas telephone interview which was supposed to come in on my mobile at a hair curling 6AM - but my phone couldn't get a signal on grand manan. I made a tentative inquiry about using the inn's land line and was told that it was no problem at all - I fielded the call -and now I've got the job, so thanks Laura!

Just returned for a fourth time following a six-year absence. When a place is fondly remembered, it's often disappointing to return, but not so with the Inn at Whale Cove Cottages. It was better than ever, which is to say just the same as ever---only with loving upkeep. (Some places that "never change" go downhill in cobwebs and dust, but Whale Cove is kept fresh and clean.) The location is ideal - private, with beautiful views, and convenient to trails and town conveniences. Proprietor, Laura Buckley's dining room is routinely cited as the island's best, for good reason, so remember to reserve a table. The accommodations are a fine mixture of comfort and charm; they fit in just right on Grand Manan. If you are looking for a beautiful island to relax on, where you can watch birds and whales, hike along stunning cliffs or settle in with a good book, a puzzle or a cribbage board, you have found paradise. If you are into resorts with organized activities, exercise equipment, a pool or tennis courts, room service and chocolates on your pillow, forget about Grand Manan, you have enough other options. Leave the Inn at Whale Cove Cottages for me and others who hope it will always be as it is.
