My wife and I recently made a trip to Grand Manan Island, scheduled on relatively short notice, in order to visit Machias Seal Island to see the puffins. We hit the Internet, saw that the Inn at Whale Cove Cottages was highest-rated of 6 Grand Manan listings on Trip Advisor with overall good reviews, and we booked a 3-night stay in John's Flat. The online photos looked good (but don't they always?) and once off the ferry from Blacks Harbour, located the nearby site without difficulty. (Fortunately, the proprietor, Laura Buckley, had emailed us that the entrance is on Whistle Road, not Whale Cove.) We met her at the office and were directed to our cottage up the hill, unprepossessing, plain and sided with cedar shakes as are all the buildings on the property. We went in the door and found ourselves in a beautiful suite with a huge living room, more than adequate kitchen, a lovely bath and a marvelous large bedroom with a king-size bed and elevated Jacuzzi. For once, the online pictures didn't do the place justice. The beautiful view overlooking Whale Cove was a bonus, and the food we had was outstanding. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we stayed an additional 2 nights. The couple of negative comments are hard to fathom as our experience was top-notch. We will most highly recommend this to anyone we know planning to visit Grand Manan.

We have never stayed at the Inn at Whale Cove but had dinner there on a recent visit to Grand Manan. Reservations are essential for this tiny dining room but the planning is worth it! We cycled there from North Head. The food was terrific - best I've had on Grand Manan. Nice and fresh, well prepared and tasty and the prices were comparable to an average restaurant in a larger city. The service was also wonderful. My partner spilled some wine and our server took away our caraffe, filled it up to the top again and provided us with fresh bread and napkins promptly. We shared a dessert - and while I would have liked to have one of my own, the portions of soup (and salad for my partner) and our main courses were generous. As it was, the bike ride back was a bit of a struggle on a full stomach! The inn rooms look charming and I would love to stay in one of the cottages for a week. Whale cove is lovely as well although I would encourage visitors to explore the rest of the island as Grand Manan is a charming place.

My husband, dog, and I are staying at the Bungalow Cottage at the Inn at Whale Cove. This cottage is perfect! It has privacy and is large enough to feel like our own home away from home. The view to the ocean is spectacular. The grounds here are beautiful and the flower beds are very pretty. The kitchen is fully equipped. Remember to bring your own food and condiments, though. The cottage has wi-fi, but no tv. The sofa is very comfortable. We have a fire going in the fireplace right now. Very cozy! It is a short walk down to the water. Laura is very personable. I recommend this location highly!

Room Tip: The Bungalow is great for 2! Private bath. It's your own home away from home.

We have stayed at Whale Cove for many years, including as a young child in the 1970s. It's difficult - and not terribly helpful - to describe the many changes from then until now. What matters is the state of affairs today. Laurie Buckley, the proprietor, has achieved near perfection. The various cottages are absolutely fantastic, and allow one to transport him/herself back to a simpler time. The absence of TV is to be relished. Admittedly, Wifi is now available, which is a nice accommodation to modern travelers' expectations. But, otherwise Whale Cove is for those seeking a true getaway, whether to spend time reading and enjoying the stunning views, or hiking the many trails around Grand Manan. This review would not be complete without mentioning the dining room, and the beautifully prepared and wonderfully delicious meals prepared by the talented Ms. Buckley. One should be sure to have a few meals in the dining room. It's not overly fancy, so all should feel welcome, but it's without question the best restaurant on the island. We have returned year after year, and have never been disappointed... not even close. I read some of the negative reviews, and I truthfully cannot fathom what went wrong.

We stayed at Orchard Cottage which accommodated ourselves, our daughter and 3 grandchildren. The cottage is well equipped with lots of kitchen aids, 2 wood burning areas: wood stove and fireplace AND lots of wood and an outdoor BQ with briquettes supplied. The ambience is charming and we felt like we had stepped back in time almost 100 years. No TV, but there are lots of books...(especially Canadiana), and games to engage children in the evenings., and a couple of radios . The walls are hung with original art works and photos. The furnishings are totally in tune with a quaint cottage environment and aesthetically very pleasing. Laura (the proprietor) has excellent taste both in the food she prepares for Whale Cove Inn dining and in her vision of what the grounds should look like and how the accommodations should be arranged.
The grounds are stunning. with a great view out to Whale Cove. There is a large grassy area with swings and sllde for little ones. Lots of very solid, comfortable adirondack chairs spread about with beautiful flower gardens and flowering trees and shrubs and grasses.all over the place. There is a path that leads down to the Cove with a bench at the end for viewing .
I found this a very well kept and hospitable place to stay. The beds were covered with very nice linens. The 2 Queen beds are extremely comfortable. The 2 twins are perhaps a little too firm for some, although young children don't seem to mind that. The bathroom was clean, with lots of towels and good water pressure and hot water.
There are many magnificent trails on the island and if you go there , the whale watching experience can be totally awesome...especially in August.
I highly recommend WhaleCove Inn accommodations and dining. Our entire family gave it a definite "thumbs up". This is the perfect place to stay.if you just want to relax and get in touch with that which is natural and beautiful and real..

We have now stayed at the Inn at Whale Cove for twelve consecutive summers. We first discovered it when we came for dinner while camping at the Provincial Park. We were immediately enchanted by the setting as we came down the long drive which opens up to the cove. The dinner was exquisite, both in the imaginative menu and the presentation. We were quite astonished to find a restaurant of this caliber on such a small island. By the end of the meal, we knew that we just had to come back and stay at the Inn. We came the next summer, and have not missed one since!

We have now stayed in most of the accomodations, including the privately owned Bungalow, John's Flat, the inn rooms, and our real favorite, Coopershop. Coopershop is a rustic, but very special four room house in which the barrels for the salt cod were made long ago, hence its name. It has a living room with huge fireplace, a brightly painted kitchen, and two cozy upstairs bedrooms. It is always immaculate.

Many guests have fallen in love with Whale Cove, and Coopershop, and many "take ownership" by adding small decorative or household items and books. Having found fresh flowers left by the guest preceding us one year has led us to start a tradition and do the same.

We are hikers, and have hiked all the trails on the island, some short walks to beautiful overlooks, some much more challenging. Favorite spots are Hay Point and Deep Cove beach. We always enjoy the evening presentations at the museum (Tuesday and Thursday nights in the summer), and the Saturday farmers' markets. Both are great places to meet local residents, and we now look forward to visiting our Grand Manan friends as much as we look forward to the peaceful ambience of the island.

We exist on pastries and bread from the French bakery in town, and when not eating at "home" or in the Whale Cove dining room, we enjoy heading to Seal Cove for dinner at McLaughlin's Wharf Inn. Another favorite activity is having tea at Harrington's Cove Cottages on a spectacular sunny afternoon.

Our annual trip to Grand Manan and Whale Cove Cottages is the respite we look forward to all year long, and a habit we hope not to break. Thank you, Laura!

So glad I took Mother to the Inn at whale Cove.I went for long nature rambles with my camera whilst mum preferred to sit in the sun and read. All the food was fresh and top notch and we both slept like logs. I read Mother all the other reviews after we got home and we are planning our next trip already! None of the praise here is exaggerated but mother was furious with one man who said he had moldy toast and Mrs Buckley was rude! We are both fuming! But as I said to mother sometimes you get a sour apple who just makes things up to be nasty.
We cant wait for next year!
