Reviewed September 4, 2013

We appreciated the wine glasses and teabags. Even a hair dryer was a bonus! The chalet was very clean and inviting.
Keep in mind that the TV only has US channels, but who wants to watch TV anyways!!
Glad to find the UNO card game. 4 out of the 5 women had never played it before, but it's a hit now!!! The laughter was probably heard all over Campobello!!
We had brought marshmallows for the campfire, but the UNO game kept us from it!!!
Enjoyed using the BBQ, easy to use and when we were done, we just moved it out unto the front lawn for any of the other tenants to use.
We were impressed when the proprietor from the little tea shop down the road delivered our dulse right to the cabin!!! Boy that was service!!!
A couple of suggestions might be:
To change the full length mirror from INSIDE the washroom to the outside of the door so that some of the women can do their hair, etc when others are in the shower. At times, we had a 3" mirror on the table, trying to do that!
For the pull out couch...everybody knows about the bar across that hurts the back, so anyone who used the couch, didn't want to pull it out for that reason. I suggest having an extra mattress to put on top of that inlayed mattress, to make it more inviting to use. At one point, I was going to ask the next Chalet if we could borrow two of their couch cushions to put together with ours at night time. It was a great experience and we loved the island trails as well as the FDR buildings. Even watching the seals come in with the tides was great! (5 min walk to the Mulholland Lighthouse was a daily event) and we were there for 4 days.

This is the perfect place to stay if you are visiting the Roosevelt International Park on Campobello Island. It is very close to the International Bridge, the New Brunswick Visitors Center and the park Visitors Center; yet, it is private and secluded. It is advisable to stay on the Island as going back and forth on the bridge requires showing passports, answering questions and a search of the trunk when going back into the US. Island Chalet consists of five small, clean, modern log cottages with breathtaking views overlooking Friars Bay. Our unit had a living room/kitchen/dining area plus a bedroom (twin beds) and bath on the first floor; there was a sleeping loft with a queen bed upstairs. There is full porch on the front with chairs. Rather than cook, we were able to obtain take- out from a restaurant and pick up prepared food and pizza from the local food market. We had a nice TV connected to Direct TV satellite so we were able to stay up on the news without a problem. The innkeeper lives on the property in his home and he was very accommodating. Watch for the large wild rabbits that come out to feed in the morning and evening. The cottages face west and mother nature did not disappoint: we were treated to a dazzling sunset display.

My wife and I took a car trip up US 1 along the Maine coast above Bar Harbor, to an area sometimes described as "Maine's Big Sur". We made no reservations anywhere because we planned to dawdle, and had no idea where we would end up.

In the event, I was tired of driving by the time we approached Lubec, ME, and we decided we would find a place somewhere around there. Since we had little idea where we were going, we inadvertently found ourselves on the bridge to Campobello Island, and rather than going through Customs in both directions, we started looking for a place to stay there.

My wife called a couple of places, and while we awaited a return call, I noticed a sign for An Island Chalet. Since it was close, we decided to kill time and check it out.

Lucky for us that we did, because it was exactly what we were looking for -- a string of cabins looking back over the bay to the US, with a rolling lawn in front all the way down to the water.

The cabins were very clean and well-appointed, and each had a porch with a couple of chairs in front. Our cabin had a living room, dining/kitchen area, and bedroom on the first floor, with a large loft bedroom upstairs. I'm not sure if the couch in the living room also pulled out. Anyway, it would have slept 4 very easily and comfortably; check with the owner if you have more than 4 in your party.

With all due respect to the cabins themselves -- and they really were quite nice -- the real attraction, to us, was the setting. Each morning, we had our tea and coffee in the Adirondack chairs set up on the lawn, and watched the morning boat traffic. The first morning, we -- almost unbelievably -- saw a whale breach briefly no more than 30 yards off the bank.

The owner/manager, Robbie, and his wife were both very nice and helpful. Those who share my background will understand what I mean when I describe this Canadian couple as "down home". I had been under siege at my job, working more than 60 hours a week for several months, and the first two weeks of our vacation had us hosting a houseful of my relatives -- enjoyable, but not exactly stress-free.

Within minutes of arriving at An Island Chalet, I was out on the lawn with a glass of Chianti, and all of that accumulated stress just melted away.

Campobello Island is the site of the Roosevelt family's summer home (now a museum). We took the tour, and it was nice, but not really a reason to head for this remote location. The island itself, though, is beautiful -- particularly East Quoddy Head at the northern tip. It's certainly not a place to go if you're looking for nightlife, man-made "attractions", or a lot of activity. But it sure is a great place to relax, enjoy nature, and recharge your batteries.

The surrounding eastern-coast-of-Maine area is simply breathtaking -- one jaw-dropper after another. An Island Chalet is a perfect base for exploring Campobello Island and Eastern Maine.

We're just back from a wonderful stay at An Island Chalet. The cabin was very comfortable and had all we needed (including WiFi that he hasn't mentioned!) and was an easy walk to the Mulholland Lighthouse, Friar's Rock overlook, the visitors center and more. We came to Campobello for the Bay of Fundy International Marathon and this was the perfect spot for all we needed. Rob & Diane were great hosts and I hope we get to go back some day.

We just left this wonderful jewel a few days ago and couldn't wait to brag about our stay. It's clear that the owner (Rob) takes great pride in An Island Chalet. Our cabin was immaculate and the furnishing were clean and comfortable. They are a 5 minute walk to the Mulholland lighthouse and yet because they are set back off of the road the area was serene and peaceful. If you kept the windows open at night you could hear the foghorn in the distance guiding the boats safely back to the shore. Rob had just cleared away some brush that had been growing and was deciding on which trees he could thin. The setting was so beautiful that we wish we had been able to extend our trip a few extra days. This is the best place on the island to stay and it's close to the FDR International park with all it's walking trails. Delightful! Jamie

We had a great stay at An Island Chalet. The simple and charming cabin was extremely clean, the kitchen had most everything we needed for meal prep. The view of the bay was beautiful. Rob was very friendly and engaging. He made sure we had extra wood for a nice campfire fire at night and even rolled his family's grill over to our cabin so we could cook some steaks. The grounds were nicely kept. Campobello is a beautiful island and I feel like we stayed at the best place on the island. We enjoyed relaxing on the porch and sitting around the campfire, we didn't turn on the TV once. Great proximity to the Roosevelt International Park as well. All in all, a great stay and we would definitely stay there again.

We stayed here for one week and totally enjoyed our stay. The cabins are relatively new and the interiors are very clean thanks to Fay and her wonderful work ethic. The ambiance is wonderfully bright and cheery. Our only negative about the property was the small trees, bush and weeds that had grown to a height that was starting to block the view of the bay. Rob the proprietor even mentioned on our first day there that it had grown to a height that was blocking the view and needed to be trimmed but never came out of the house to do anything except cut the grass once, very disappointing.

Advice to people visiting would be to request a list of information regarding garbage removal, towel and toiletry acquisition, an island map with local destinations and information. There is a Tourist Information booth at the entry to the island, but it closes at 6:00pm so if you arrive after that time you have no information to browse preparing for your first day on the island.

If you like to BBQ, beware there is only one portable BBQ for the 5 cabins. Although the unit was new last year it is very heavy and the wheels are broken off so to move it is very difficult so you might consider taking your own if you plan to do a lot of barbecuing. We also found that the kitchen cooking utensils were scant so take your favorite fry pan, knives and salt and pepper. if you are doing your own cooking. Ladies take your hairdryer.

Overall a very pleasant experience.
