We arrived at Haida House after a not so pleasant couple of nights with bad weather impending to a warm welcome and good food . They bent over backwards to accommodate our party. The area was very cabin in the woods with river running through it. Fun to fish or watch fishermen on the river. We could sit in a comfortable bar before dinner. If we wanted a different atmosphere there was the den with a TV and a place to play cards & games or just chill.
I would recommend this house to anyone contemplating a visit to Haida Gwaii.
Food was also the best on the island.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms facing the river but we stayed looking at the forest and that was fine as well.

We stayed at Haida House for 8 nights. This is the place to stay on Haida Gwaii: excellent meals, clean, comfortable accommodation, superb management under the watchful but never obtrusive eye of Kathy, and friendly people all combine to make Haida House an outstanding experience. This is one of the best lodges anywhere!

The Haida House is as much about the people behind it as it is the wood that it's built from. The entire staff knew us by name on the first day, was incredibly friendly, helpful, and shared their love of Haida Gwaii. Kathy, Aileen, Khataya were so sweet and added the heart that makes the Haida House's magical location (Tlell river on one side, gorgeous and expansive beach on the other) so much more interesting. Clean rooms, great meals (breakfast included) to boot.

We ended up at Haida House after a big storm caused our ferry back to Prince Rupert to be cancelled. Kathy, the manager, took us in and found us space, although she had a group returning to the hotel after their flight was cancelled. Little did we know what we had stumbled upon at this gem! Despite power outages, an unexpected full house, a raging storm and all plans thrown up in the air, Kathy gave us an amazing experience. She got everyone relaxed with wine and sodas, provided a cultural tour (the resort is owned by the Haida community), reassured us that the Tlell River outside our door would not flood -- and then served dinner family style -- a group of stranded travelers from Mexico, the US, BC and Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Circle. The chefs (outstanding) put out salmon, Cornish hens, roasted veggies, salads, roasted potatoes, bread, and then a dessert plate accompanied by the largest bowl of fresh whipped cream I've ever seen. I could go on about the food (breakfast was outstanding again - a real breakfast), but it's the service that makes the difference. Kathy must have been run off her feet but she was always there, making sure we had what we needed, telling us about the history and culture of the Haida people, describing places to hike, shop for Haida art, even the hours of the Queen Charlotte City thrift shop! The room we had was small (but who was complaining while 100 kmh winds raged outside?), but there are many to choose from. Everything was spotlessly clean, yet homey. (Meaning my own home is not...) Haida House offers tours -- Haida villages, a Haida dinner, other activities -- which are led by Haida guides and all seemed reasonably priced. There is a little shop that Kathy runs, as she deals directly with the artists; again, the prices seemed reasonable, even less than some galleries we visited. The lodge itself is beautiful - warm cedar, Haida art, huge windows looking out onto the river - but again, the warmth of the service is what will bring us back here soon. (and the whipped cream).

My wife & I, our 3 children, their spouses & 5 grandchildren, plus 2 long-time friends, recently celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary using Haida House as our base. We spent 4 marvellous days on Haida Gwaii taking part in various outings which Kathy, the manager, helped arrange. Kathy was exceptionally friendly & helpful, both before and during our visit. She helped coordinate special arrangements for a traditional feast with a local host, and her advice to various members of our family on what to do & see on the islands was right on. The rest of the staff were equally friendly and the chef's offerings for breakfast rate among the best anywhere we've seen in our many travels. Similarly, the rooms provided basic amenities, but the decor, which featured a Haida wall hanging, was stunning! Our only regret is that we hadn't planned to spend more time there. Nevertheless, the hospitality of the people, and the beauty of the surroundings will be remembered for a long time.

Room Tip: Second floor rooms are difficult to access for people with mobility problems. Likewise, parking sho...

Haida House in Tlell on Haida Gwaii is the perfect B&B - the rooms were very clean & comfortable, decorated with Haida art. The breakfasts were light years from the usual B&B breakfast fare - smoked salmon omelet, homemade jam, excellent coffee, lots of fruit - too yummy. Dinner was awesome - the chefs would not be out of place in any high-end Vancouver restaurant. I was there celebrating friends' 50th wedding anniversary and we were able to use the den for a slideshow & celebration. There is a fridge in the den for guests' use. Altogether a fabulous experience in an absolutely magic part of the world!

Room Tip: The location on the tidal river, Tlell River, is lovely - very peaceful. I was on the second floor...
