“Spectacular quaint spot”
Reviewed October 9, 2006

We went to Telegraph Cove purely to do the Grizzly Bear Tour. But WOW. What a gorgeous unassuming place. Stayed in Cabin 9 - just GORGEOUS. No TV (gave me a shock - had to talk to hubby instead!!). It is the cutest place we have stayed in for a long long time - and we are big big travellers (only one continent to go - Antarctica ... done 43 US states, Africa, Europe, mid-East, South America). Quaint, unpretentious, unaffected by the 21st century. Could have stayed for weeks. I hope they don't let the developers change it too much.

Did the Grizzly Tour with Tide Rip Tours - they are located near the restaurant on the boardwalk. FANTASTIC. Saw 3 grizzlies and 2 black bear. What more could we want. But then we passed orca on the way back - bonus!! Fantastic Tour with a very knowledgable guide. Couldn't recommend it highly enough.

This is the 1st review I have written. I felt compelled to do so because the place was soooooo gorgeous and the tour incredibly wonderful. But if you're looking for 5 star resorts .... go elsewhere. This is an unaffected fishing village (the fishermen still get up at 5 a.m. and yack while getting their boats out so be prepared to be woken early). But if you want a "back to nature and see wildlife" experience, you can't go past Telegraph Cove.

  • Liked — It was quaint - cabins are ex-fisherman's cottages redone .... just gorgeous.
  • Disliked — Nothing - it was gorgeous.
  • Tips/Secrets — Cabin 9 is apparently the cutest. For a couple only though. Larger cabins are less cute - but still nice.

Stayed here in August/September 06 for 2 nights. Telegraph Cove is very out of the way and very small. You don't get much choice of accommodation. We were originally meant to stay in Wastell Manor but were moved into a stand-alone house due to a wedding party. Very basic. Not much choice of food in this town - bring food if you can.

Telegraph Cove is a unique place. Rooms / appartments are actually in the old living quarters of an old sawmill. The old mill itzelf is now the restaurant and the departure point for killer whale excursions. It has been tastefully converted and lovingly restored, very quaint. It appears the owners needed money a few years ago and sold a large plot of land directly opposite the cove, wher you now have a new condo. A real shame that spois the tranquility and "remoteness" to some extent. More second homes are likely to be built soon... But it’s a great place to relax nonetheless. We stayed in the Okura house, once owned by a Japanese family working in the mill. As we stayed in Telegraph Cove three nights and there is only one restaurant within the area, we wanted to cook ourselves one night (the houses are fully equipped with a full kitchen and everything you could need). Be warned that the store at Telegraph Cove has only very very limited supplies (and at triple the cost of elsewhere!), so stock up on your groceries in Nanaimo, Port Alberni or Campbell River!
we took the killer whale tri which was superb, 26 killer whales and 3 humpback whales with beautiful weather. But - make sure to also take the Rip Tide grizzly tour departing from Telegraph Cove. It was probably the most memorable trip we took on this vacation, due to the very enthusiastic captain / owner and casual atmosphere (quite important on an 8 hour trip!). He is very knowledgeable and has lots of stories of the region and how he grew up here. Staff went out of their way to please everyone on board. Despite the busy season it was all very relaxed and casual. Needless to say we saw 3 grizzlies from very close range in a gorgeous wild landscape in the inner reaches of Knight Inlet fiord. Amazing!

  • Liked — uniqueness of the place
  • Disliked — the store!
  • Tips/Secrets — take the rip tide grizzly tour (besides the "mandatory" killer whale tour

A fantastic resort - especially when the sun is shining. We stayed in the Wastell Manor which has 4 rooms and a shared lounge/diner and conservatory with a great sea view. It's a fair old walk along the boardwalk from the car park and could have done with a lick of paint - but this didn't spoil our enjoyment. The Killer Whale Cafe serves superb food - particularly the seafood platter and halibut & chips! The resort has a handy General Store where you can buy reasonably priced snacks and drinks. Great place to stay if you are touring the North of Vancouver Island. There are plent y of deer, sea-eagles and bears around - if you get up early enough to see them. Whale-watching trips run from the resort too.

although a bit of a trip to get here (we hired a car and drove from vancouver) it was well worth it. whale watching trips that are very uncommercial and all about keeping nature happy, great food in restaurant, lovely souveniers - fab memories! accomodation was quite basic but inkeeping with the environment. make sure the orca are in the area if thats what youre going for (we were a week early for the resident pod, but still saw a transient) would totally recommend!
