“Best motel in Port McNeill”
Reviewed July 17, 2012

Avoid the run down overpriced places in Port Hardy catering to captive BC Ferries trade,
and stay in Port McNeill down the road, service centre of north island. Compact and attractive town with most services, and BC Ferry to Alert Bay and Sointula, worth the short trip. Several older hotels and motels, Haida Way has good food, Black Bear is across the road and fairly new, family operated, built by owners who ran a local cedar mill. Good personal service and staff all try to help. Attractive timber sided buildings, with a row of cabins being built. Large for a motel, lovely views over the town and harbour, huge car park for trailers and campers., and a covered outdoor eating area, with bbqs. All modern, well maintained and very clean. Breakfast room in reception building has a pretty good buffet with most standards, fruit, yogurt, eggs, waffles, toasters, pastries and good coffee. Doubles as a meeting room for groups. Several good pubs and restaurants down on the harbourfront.
Satellite flat panel TVs, wifi reaches most areas on the large site, complimentary computer in reception area.
Not quite a resort, although aiming for that and getting there; has a spa building with good indoor pool, whirlpool, saunas, exercise equipment for guests, and massages/beauty treatments.
High end prices for the area but worth it considering the facilities. Have stayed there several times, planning a group trip, consistent and friendly service.

Room Tip: All rooms good, built around central parking area, more privacy upstairs. Downstairs you can park o...

It was super clean, I was missing my shower curtain when I got in there as they had washed it!!! Very impressive as the Travelodge and many other places I have been don't seem to (they always smell like pee after they get wet...ewwww). They fixed the problem right away and apologized!

Room Tip: get one on the top floor for a view if you don't mind carrying your stuff up a flight of stairs

Good place to stay in Port Mcneill, convenient avernight for people arriving in Port Hardy from the Inside Passage ferry trip. The rooms are extra spacious and spotless. The continental breadfast included is standard. For those wanting to cook up their own steaak, barbeques are provided. Very quiet units! I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: This facility is only two stories so no elevator is available. If you have mobility problems or lots...

Stayed four night up in Port McNeill, watching whales, visiting the nearby islands and generally relaxing. The Black Bear Resort really helped out to make it a very relaxing stay, recommending places to eat and things to do.

Also appreciated the BBQ pit for making good food.

I stayed at this motel for 1 night in October while on a business trip to the area. I did not make a reservation and just walked in. I picked this motel because it was a decent looking place with vacancy; I wasn't disappointed.

Clean room with a mini-fridge, small table, microwave and coffee maker. There was also a small LCD television with plenty of stations. Free wireless internet was included with the room.

The beds and faux-leather arm chair were more than adequate.

There is a small, stuffy workout room in the pool/hot tub area. It is crowded with low quality, poorly maintained exercise equipment.

I did not have the breakfast.

Appeared to mostly be business travellers at this time of year.

Room Tip: All rooms appear to be about the same.

I stayed Black Bear Resort for two nights with a family member and a friend. This resort came to the rescue as our accommodations in Alert Bay fell through at the last minute. We hopped back on the ferry to Port McNeil, and were greeted by a friendly front desk agent at Black Bear Lodge. Unfortunately, the room left a lot to be desired with a less than clean looking bed spread, poor lighting, and low quality shower soap/gel/shampoo/conditioner. On the positive side, the nightly rate included a continental breakfast each morning including: bread and bagels for toasting, a waffle maker, hard boiled eggs, cereal, coffee, juice, etc. I would return to this resort for its convenient location and closeness to the Port McNeil ferry terminal.

The staff is very helpful. The grounds are well maintained. The rooms are still very very good. I'm here for 6 nights and every night this motel is full yet quiet. The conti b/fast each morning is one of the best I've been to.
Well done Black Bear Inn!!
