“A delightful place and very hard to leave”
Reviewed September 27, 2009

We really enjoyed our stay at Hidden Cove Lodge. The setting is beautiful and although we weren't lucky enough to see a black bear, the resident racoon family were a delight and the 5 month old babies oh-so-cute in a clumsy kind of way. Dan (host) was especially entertaining with his tongue-in-cheek humour. The evening meal was delicious with generous portions and the waitresses were very friendly. Breakfast was also great. Our room was impeccably clean, comfortable and very quiet. We hope to return some day in the not-too-distant future.

Four of us stayed in one of the two cottages overlooking the sea. The cottage was clean & tidy with a fantastic view, which, on one afternoon included a black bear less than 10ft away, he just ignored us but we have him on camera.
We ate at the lodge three out of the four nights. The menu was available in the morning to book for that evening. There was a limited choice, but who cares the quality and presentation of the food was excellant - we have dined in 2* restaurants that would be hard pushed to match the quality. The waitresses were friendly and helpful and as other visitors have said the hosts Dan and Sandra were great , visiting each table for a chat before sitting down to their own evening meal. The whole experience was FANTASTIC!!!

Sure I won't add anything that hasn't been said in other reviews, but loved this place so much I had to write a review! We almost didn't stay here as it was over our budget, but having read the reviews on tripadvisor we decided we had to, and were so pleased we did. The staff were all fantastic, especially the owner Dan, and the location was superb (we spent many a happy hour sitting on the jetty admiring the view). The wildlife was also fantastic - on our first night we were telling Dan how we hadn't seen any bears yet, and he said 'well there's one over there'. Sure enough there was a black bear strolling down the beach! And then another one turned up on the lawn just outside the lodge. Breakfast was great, and improved by the sight of the racoons having their breakfast on the porch outside. We also ate dinner there on all three nights of our stay and the food was consistently good. Our stay was the highlight of our 2 week trip - if you have the chance to visit you really should!

Hidden Cove Lodge is everything that has already been described by other reviewers and more. We spent 3 weeks in Canada, 10 days in the Rockies, 3 days in Vancouver island and 7 days in Vancouver – there is no question that Hidden Cove Lodge and the surrounding wildlife/location was the highlight of our trip. Dan and Sandra are great hosts – it was such a shame to leave as Dan is such a funny /interesting guy we could have stayed and chatted for many more days if not weeks. The dinner and breakfasts were hearty. The rooms were basic, old fashioned country/lodge style – but very clean. There were raccoons hanging around on the balcony when we ate dinner and we saw a black bear twice from the lobby of the hotel – it was fantastic! The whale watching tour they booked for us didn’t disappoint – we were picked up from the jetty just outside the lodge and saw all the whales, dolphins, sea lions, eagles, and seals that you could hope to see. The next day we went on a grizzly bear watching tour which was fantastic - also picked up from their private jetty – more wildlife in abundance – grizzlies, black bears, and a pod of about 50 dolphins that rode the wake of our speed boat. It was hard to take it all in – amazing. The lodge was a cozy place to come back to and we really wish that we had booked more of our stay there. It was fab. We have agreed we would like to spend at least a week on Vancouver Island - at the lodge – if you want to get away from it all and reconnect with nature it really is the place to go.

I hate to say it has taken me a whole year to write this review but that's a busy life for you...
I hated to leave this place. I wanted to stay forever. It is a wonderful place to stay. Not great luxury but comfortable clean and what a location and welcome. We stayed in the small cabin in the garden outside the lodge. This was comfortable and clean and our own little home from home. There are cooking facilitiies but we chose to have our breakfast and dinner in the hotel. The food was great. Absolutely no criticism, only praise. And then breakfast was an experience, especially when accompanied by a bear just wandering about outside the window (Dan, we are still waiting for that video on You Tube..) and sitting and chatting for hours over coffee with Dan.
I actually didn't want to write this review. I don't want anyone to go to this hotel so it is never booked up when I want to go back.
Of course we went on the bear trip (TideRip) and the whale waching with the fantastic Mackay family (who both pick up from the hotel) but I hate to say it, staying at Hidden Cove was probably the highlight of our stay on Vancouver Island if not of our whole trip to Canada.
Thanks to all on the Tripadvisor forum for the recommendation!

We stayed three nights at Hidden Cove and I have to say it was the highlight of our two week holiday to Canada. We stayed at the lodge specifically for the grizzly bear and whale watching tours (which were excellent) however there was an abundance of wildlife to be seen at the lodge itself including bears, racoons, otters and deer. The owners, Sandra and Dan, are perfect hosts and Dan has such a great sense of humour he regularly had us clutching our sides with laughter. The dinner menu may be limited however the standard of the food is excellent and portions more than adequate. This is a great place to stay and you couldn't ask for a more peaceful setting.

Glad my husband and I decided to stay here this past July. Beautiful, isolated setting, but only 10 minutes from Port McNeill. Enjoyed the wildlife, the sunsets, breakfast conversations with friendly and funny Dan. The room was not fancy, but clean and had everything we needed. So much to do nearby: whale watching, grizzly bear watching, kayaking, seaplane flights. The First Nation's cultural center at Alert Bay was exceptional. Great experience all around!
