We recently hosted our wedding - for 82 guests - at the West Coast Wilderness Lodge (Spring, 2012). The venue, the food and the staff (and fortunately, the weather) were all incredible. From the BBQ friday night, the breakfasts Saturday and Sunday mornings, through the reception and plated dinner, they did a fantastic job.

Lodging-wise, the resort was great. The beds are very comfy and overall the rooms are clean and comfortable. I really liked what they'd done with the bathrooms; though the showers could use a little more water pressure (that's just a personal preference thing). You could definitely ask for more lodging capacity - though that's being dealt with -> see below. It was very helpful that they work with the Backeddy (right next door) to help accomodate extra guests.

The main building of the Lodge itself is absolutely beautiful. An incredible, rustic building with a phenomenal view. You really have to go up there to see it in order to believe it. The ambiance on the night of the wedding was very well set - especially since the lodge helped contribute their own candles to the dining room as well as the deck, where they laid out all the muskoka chairs while we were eating.

The staff were amazing enough to open two weeks early on the season to host our wedding - as they had been doing construction on the deck and a new cabin over the winter and weren't planning to open until May. They'd even laid down new paving stones on the paths since we'd last been there in the fall. The work they're doing looks amazing and the lodge will be even better once it's completed.

The only real issue we had (and this is more an artifact of the timing of our wedding - the lodge was closed over the winter after all) was that guests had a hard time reaching the lodge in order to make arrangements for their weekend up there. Once the weekend of the wedding actually arrived and the staff were around full time, things went off without a hitch.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend the West Coast Wilderness Lodge to anyone looking to plan a wedding of up to 120 people.

Room Tip: All the rooms and suites are good - though the ocean view suites in particular are amazing.

Just had the absolute pleasure of visiting this beautiful spot on the Sunshine Coast. Our goal was to find some peace and quiet and enjoy the beauties of nature. There could be no better spot.
While it is the off season, Paul Hansen, the rather wonderful, if somewhat eccentric owner, provided us with a lovely room with a spectacular view of the inlet which the lodge sits upon. Dress warm and there really is nothing finer than sitting on the deck enveloped in silence and a night lit by stars. This is what romance is made of.
We spent much time simply wandering the surrounding rain forest but on one incredible day, Paul offered to take us out kayaking - apparently a very large part of the activities in season. Brisk might be a good word for our time on the water but what a real joy.
As I mentioned it was the off season - the main Lodge itself was closed - so a little self reliance was necessary when it came to food. But a hamper of charcuterie, some cheese, a little refreshment, and what more could one ask for.
We have already booked for this summer and can hardly wait to see this gem when it is fully open for business. If our experience when it was technically closed is anything to go by, then we're sure everything will be spectacular. Our friends who attended a wedding there last summer assured us that you could not ask for anything more.

We hosted our wedding for 100 people at the West Coast Wilderness Lodge, summer 2011. The location is beautiful, and the staff did a great job hosting the welcome BBQ and wedding dinner. However, we had a lot of trouble in the planning stages of our wedding and were left feeling overcharged in spite of everything.

It seems as though the lodge has grown quickly (for weddings, at least) and they are still working out the kinks in their service. There were many errors made along the way leading up to the event, and it became fairly stressful dealing with the staff through email with some big slip ups and oversights. We were told that we were caught in the "learning curve" of their staff, however it was frustrating paying premium rates for sub-par service. We felt like we were paying "luxury" prices, but receiving "wilderness" services; they use both adjectives to describe the lodge, and often switch between the two. We would have been fine with wilderness service and wilderness prices, or vice versa, but it was the high prices and mediocre services that became frustrating. I will save you the details of the challenges, but if other couples would like to benefit from our learnings, DM me and I'd be happy to chat.

The lodge is beautiful and will undoubtedly be a great place to host weddings when they have more experience dealing with the details involved with larger events. I apologize to the owners as I know they won't be thrilled to see this posted, but I do believe that it is a fair and balanced review. Again, the lodge is beautiful, tons of activities in the area, great to have group privacy at the lodge for the wedding weekend, but there are shortcomings to be acknowledged as well.

** Putting 1 star for 'kids activities' because the lodge has no cribs, and 1 high chair, so be prepared if you are traveling with young ones.

Room Tip: Anything with an ocean view is lovely.

We are pleased that you found our location so appealing and were happy with the Welcome BBQ , Wedding Dinner, and the exclusive access that the lodge provides to our wedding clients.

We took responsibility for any per-planning mix-ups with your group and worked to address all concerns as quickly, efficiently and as warmly as possible.

Each wedding is different, as are the expectations of our valued clients. Unfortunately it is rare for any business to offer perfection to all clients all the time despite best efforts and we are no exception. Again, our apologies.

Your comments have been shared with our staff and will be continue to be utilized for training purposes as we move into next season.

Thank you for your feedback.

Sincerely,

Paul

We stayed at the resort for three nights recently. It is a curious mix of amazing location and a beautiful main building with moody staff and not quite up to par cabins.

Dinner was terrific and the prices were not a surprise given the remote nature. However breakfast was a disaster with insufficient staff for the number of guests.

Tea was cold, the tables lacked cutlery and any question asked of the staff seemed a major inconvenience.

Yet the previous day the same staff went out of their way to find space for our young daughter in the dining room.

There are little touches like umbrellas hanging on the main lodge in case you forget yours and giant bonfire pit by the water. But the lights down to the fire do not work and the path is treacherous.

In short they almost have it right but it's a little too pricey given that they don't.

Thank you for your comments, we also found breakfast to be a little hectic that morning. Having almost 130 people trying to sit for breakfast at the same time caught us off guard. Usually after a wedding, the guests will make their way in to breakfast over a 3 hour period. Your comments have made us aware that on the mornings of a large function, we will need a hostess on to handle traffic control and seating. Again, we appreciate your comments.

We try to keep our food costs as reasonable as possible. Its not the location that drives the price, its quality and presentation of the entree. Our menu (entree prices), which runs from $14 to $32 are competitive for prices found in any dinning room on the Sunshine Coast including local pubs.

We have never heard of the beach trail being described as treacherous before. We often have elderly guests walking the trail to the beach for kayaking tours, but at night however a flashlight is recommended.

It is comments from our guests that enable us to find weaknesses and strive to be better. Thank you again for your views and comments.

The Westcoast Wilderness Lodge is nestled in the comfy, relaxed fishing village of Egmont, B.C. Fantastic panoramic vistas await the naked eye from the amazing decks and view-points...the boat excursion to Princess Louisa Inlet will take your breath away, the food is absolutely first class, organic, local (seafood and vegetables), deliciously presented by an able, friendly and informed staff. The rooms are exquisite, try not having a good sleep on amazingly comfortable beds and the sound of silence and nature lulling your urban stresses away. You'll return to civilization renewed, refreshed and renourished. I highly recommend a stay. You wont regret it.

If you are lucky and have good weather for your stay at the West Coast Wilderness Lodge it's georgeous, the views are absolutely breathtaking. The cabins are rather new, very clean and nicely furnished. The food is very good but the views from the restaurant are even better.
If you want to do some sports try the canooing tour; it's defintely worth it, you will see seals, eagles etc.. Our canooing guide gave us one special advice: if the night is very dark go to the sea and splash around, you will be very surprised at what will happen: Your hand will light up as if it was illuminated by a thousand stars as the plancton in the water will light up by the movement of your hand!!!

I have been a guest at the West Coast Wilderness quite a few times , mostly with my husband but this last time with my daughter. Upon arrival the view always takes my breath away. The staff was welcoming and the rooms were very inviting (as always). This time we booked a zodiac trip, and got to explore Hotham Sound, Tsusooni Narrows (probably spelt wrong) and the Skookumchuck Narrows. Our experience was wonderful and I would highly reccommend the West Coast Wilderness Lodge. For me this is one of my favourite places I have ever visited.
