“Lacking hospitality and not attending to ANY detail!”
Reviewed October 31, 2012

Recently stayed a night at the Shady Shores Beach Resort, 'Beach Log Cabin'. Overall the property is fairly nice, but its clear the owners have given no attention to detail or the importance of hospitality. Besides signs posted absolutely everywhere telling you what you cannot do, the place has a cold feeling (that may have been from the fact that the owner was too cheap to turn the furnace on for us). In addition the 'rule book' displayed on the kitchen table makes one feel like they are crossing an international boarder or something along those lines as it lacks any sort of 'welcome' or 'thank you', and threatens financial penalties at the end of absolutely every sentence. If the property wasn't in such a beautiful location there is no doubt in my mind that this operation would be out of business. Compared to every other condo or house i have every rented, the operation of this place was a joke!

It is unfortunate that we have to list requirements to follow in our home, but it is more unfortunate that there are those whom believe that with their rental they are provided the allowance to disrespect our property. Thus the list has been made, and continues with new additions, as common sense and respect is tested time after time. Some of our guests are not privy to septic treatment plants and how they become disfunctional with the addition of feminine hygene products ect. And then there are those whom are unaware how tides work and choose to leave the watercraft on the beach. Others believe that the hot tub is a bathtub, and the propane fire pit can roast marshmallows. Because this is a private home, we do not have the ability to guide our uninformed guests prior to these subsequent acts, therefore we just continue to make additions to the list. As for the comment on the furnace....we ALWAYS stoke the wood stove long before our guests arrive during the cold months. The Home is warm and cozy before their arrival, unless of course they show up early. There are thermostats located in each and every room should our guest require additional heat, and only a touch of the switch, and WALA electric heat is provided. Or if the guest is uncomfortable in any way, they can contact the office at any time, so we can look after any concern immediately. Or of course they can be uncomfortable for their stay and go home and write about it.

From September 7 – 10, we enjoyed the tranquility and beauty of Shady Shores. We were in Cabin #6 which is directly adjacent to the beach. Through the front window we watched sunrise creep over the horizon, salmon jumping, a heron, seals frolicking, a cruise ship or two off in the distance and the purple and pink skies at sunset. We did a little touring and visited the wacky woods, the market at Coombs, Little Qualicum Falls Park and Cathedral Grove (MacMillan Park). All of these places are within easy driving distance. One of the coolest things was watching the salmon jump. According to Carolina, our host, the salmon were waiting for rain so they could swim upstream. They were quite numerous and jumped continuously very close to shore. The water would also appear to “boil” when they swam in circles in large groups. Although we did not see any, Carolina told us killer whales sometimes make an appearance too.

We appreciated the book containing specific guidelines for disposal of garbage, etc. Although not intentional, without guidelines the environment can easily become contaminated.

When on holiday, everyone is looking for something different. Our stay at Shady Shores was exactly what we needed.

We spent a week here late in August 2012. Shady Shores is a beautiful, small and somewhat secluded beach resort. The units appear almost new, with an extremely well appointed with a fully equipped kitchen, two good-sized bedrooms and a small living room with a pull out sofa. We started with just three of us and it was roomy and comfortable. When the rest of the family showed up (3 more) with two in each room and the sofabed, we still didn't feel cramped.

The shoreline is spectacular (fishing literally jumping out of the water 100 feet away from us) and we were able to have a beach bonfire each time (something that we haven't been able to enjoy elsewhere). The kids even roasted marshmallows and other guests joined us.

During the day I could sit on the lawnchairs and watch my kids play on the beach without a worry. My son (who is autistic) was treated with respect and was able to do his own thing. WE travel frequently and I never found a more accepting attitude and respect elsewhere.

Shopping locally was a treat with fresh food and local meat. Local people were incredibly friendly and helpful. We shopped in Parksville as well and enjoyed the family adventure center with mini-golf and bumper boats (less than 1/2 hour away from the resort)

The owner Carole was friendly and outgoing. Wish I had more time off to spend here. I hope to come back soon (maybe in the fall). Extremely reasonable rates ... I paid twice as much to rent a TRAILER and spot in Penticton for a week! this is by far the more civilized way to "camp".

Kudos to Carole and Shady Shores. We will return

Room Tip: They are all good - all face the seashore.

My husband and I decided to go to Shady shores for our one year anniversary. We had been researching the internet for a romantic, scenic ,ocean front cottage. We can honestly say the pictures of shady shores measured up to our percieved vision of the place. When we arrived we were greeted with caroline's vibrant personality. We were both awe struck at the beauty of the resort. We both loved the cottages as they were immaculately clean and tastefully decorated.A chilled bottle of wine was waiting for us to celebrate our anniversary.Caroline helped us by giving details of places to have a romantic dinner and a run down of all nearby stores. We loved sitting in the lounge chairs watching the seals and enjoying the beautiful mountain view.It was so peaceful and quiet.
The next afternoon 4 of our family members joined us.My mom and dad loved it here so much they want to go back next summer for a month. We enjoyed cooking in the cottage and barbecuing than sitting as a family outside on our picnic table to enjoy our feast.Sitting outside in the hot tub than playing a game of cards overlooking the beach as the sun went down was a vacation that will be forever embedded in our memories. This place is heaven on earth.

We stayed recently for August long weekend, and had a great time all around. There are always so many factors taken into consideration when rating accommodations, so I will give a pros and cons list of shady shores:

Pros: very friendly staff, clean, quiet and safe location right on the beach (private bonfires allowed!)! Family friendly
Cons: small units, overpriced considering the following: no firewood or fire making supplies included, extremely outdated rooms (old tvs, unmatching furniture, uncomfortable beds in small bedrooms with aged retro 80's decor), many broken or missing utensils (broken cheese grater, unworking can opener, etc.), far from town. This isn't always a bad thing but for those that don't know, it is about 35 minutes to parksville.

Overall this place is average due to the price and condition of the units. A little tlc will go a long way!

What a shame..... if one would only use the art of comunication to solve any issues while here, instead of suffering with broken untencils, and waiting to return home to write about them. Had this guest inquired where the town was, they would have been delighted to find that if they had turned right instead of left, we are only 1/4 mile away from our town. So many problems can be solved by using speech....is this what the future holds???? The inability to converse with one another, then find your courage to complain after the fact on a computer.

Stayed a Shady Shores last summer and loved it. The units were clean and the view todie for. Caroline ( the owner ) was very helpful, organizing ourday trip and booking our tee time at a near by golf coarse. Therefore, this year we booked the Log Cabin, for my 65th birthday. It accommodated our entire family. It was the best holiday ever. Sitting in the hot tub with a glass of wine watching the most amazing sunset. We have already booked a week in Sept. and next year the cabin for three weeks. Ann Zenchuk

This July long weekend was our first stay at Shady Shores and we would definitely not recommend this property. Outfitted with a kitchen - plus a few extra visitors (MICE) that arrived the first night and we were asked to catch during our remaining nights. Yes, THREE mice visited our tiny kitchen and hopped around the food boxes looking for goodies. Carolyn offered the trap to us after many questions fired at us about how the mice got in and did we definitely see them!! She suggested that either we or previous tenants had left the door open as she could not find any point of entry into our unit - ummm, try behind the stove/fridge unit my husband suggested as that is where they ran to when he surprised them. NO reparations, no offer to re-locate us and worst of all no APOLOGY. We understand that in nature locations you cannot control every little detail, but the inquisition and the keeping the trap hot so we could catch all three mice was annoying. Each morning around 5 AM we'd hear the zap indicating a friend had met his death, my husband would get up and dump the trap so it could be reset for the other guys. The second guy stuck to the trap and burnt - nice smell in our unit after that. We wanted to turn the trap in after two mice were captured BUT Carolyn insisted we keep it and catch the third - so she didn't have to. Oh, and take extra toilet paper if you don't like to run out and have to find her at the desk...good luck :) Not cheap, but definitely easy to recommend you go stay anywhere else...I wanted to upload pictures of the mice but my husband wouldn't let me LOL

I usually don't respond to the ridiculous, but sometimes it is just beyond my capability to comprehend.ones ability to contort the facts...and this is one of them. A guest....that was not even staying in the said room, came in early the day after arrival to tell me about the 3 mice. I of course replied with...were they blind? It is very difficult to count mice as they apparently scurry around your room without numbers on their little backs, you could in fact be seeing the same one twice. Which of course would eliminate their absence of sight...sooooo the story goes. And yes in "fact" I did inquire if they had left their door opened, and also inquired about the numbers, So I could determine the possible entry points, we surveyed the circumference of the outside and inside of the said suite, saw NO openings, nor any indicatrion of them enjoying my guests food, or leaving their little droppings after doing so. I would have offered them another suite if I had it to offer, however there was no space left in the mouse proof rooms. It is not uncommon to have wild life big and small come to visit from time to time, however we do our best to dissuade them from making themselves at home in our suites. I was befuddled, as to how the little darlings gained entry....and only into that particular suite, and keep in mind that all 5 suites have common walls. I didn't have much option other than to offer up the electricution style trap, other than to send them home, from what was a reunion with thier friends that were staying in the log home. After the second catch the gentleman brought back the trap, I asked if he had caught all 3 that he apparently had herded into the corner the first night, but did not want to wake his familky by hitting them with the broom. Oh we all had a big laugh over that one. A mouse herder hmmmmm. So once again I asked if he was sure he saw 3....to which he replied yes... 3 mice jumped out of MY cooler and scurried across the floor. Well I guess that is all I have to say about this. We have not seen nor heard of any further mouse stories. And we ask all of our customers to please check you coolers before bringing them inside our suites.
THE END
