Owner description: U'mista Cultural Centre is one of the longest-operating and most successful First Nations cultural facilities in BC, founded in 1980 as a ground breaking project to house potlatch artifacts which had been seized by government during an earlier period of cultural repression. The return of the potlatch artifacts not only provided U'mista's name ('the return of something important'), and sparked a general trend toward repatriation of First Nations and cultural artifacts, it caused the creation of a physical facility and human resources infrastructure which have been successfully operated for over two decades.U'mista now operates a modern museum and cultural education facility in Alert Bay. Their operations include the museum, an extensive art gallery and gift shop, group tours, and presentations by dance troupes. The facility hosts international scholars, and supports researchers in a range of disciplines.
Useful Information: Bathroom facilities, Activities for young children, Activities for older children, Wheelchair access

If you are interested in First Nations Culture, this is a must see. The videos are well worth the time it takes to view them. There is a story here that needs to be told.

We had an astounding visit to Alert Bay and the U'mista Cultural Centre. We learned a great deal, and have a better understanding of native history on Vancouver Island. We were touched by the warmth and hospitality of our hosts. We want to return for another longer visit. There is so much to see in the museum, and the storytelling is wonderful.

Lots of history about the First Nations of the area. Great artifacts and a lovely building. If you are lucky you'll have elders telling stories!

What a great museum experience. Artifacts repatriated to this tribe are on display, including the most stunning masks. Enlightening brief film on the tribe and their potlatch ceremony. The gift store includes superb masks by living artists. The staff were informed and very polite.

The collection of native masks is wonderful. The vintage pictures and short stories of origins and transformations are all worth seeing. Even if you are not knowledgeable in the native culture this is worth the trip.
