Staying at Dave and Maureen's quaint water-front accommodation proved to be a blessing with the early start on the boat next day. From the cottage deck we spent the evening watching bald eagles up close (and even saw humpback whales make their way past the next day!) We enjoyed a hike up to the forest and wandered around town before enjoying a cold beer under the stars, then a good night's sleep to prepare for the whale watching tour. The next morning we walked the few steps to Dave's sailboat where he made us feel very welcome and safe, providing us with all the right gear to stay warm during the morning chill. Before we even left the jetty, Maureen was sharing her expert knowledge on various whale species and where to look for them. We spotted our first minke whales before we even left Alert Bay. The sailboat was fast enough to cover a sizable area to follow the pods, but blissfully peaceful when the engines were killed and we floated silently waiting for the humpbacks to break the surface. And they did frequently! One even breached right in front of the boat! Great photography, breathtaking scenery and a childhood dream realized that day, all topped off with Maureen's delicious baking. I would return in a heartbeat.
