“Affordable and Luxurious”
Reviewed June 9, 2014

I stayed here with a friend last summer and had a great time! The cabins were clean, and comfortable. The owners have set it up perfectly and we made use of the BBQ, hot tub and fire pit which were real bonuses. The homemade breakfasts were great! I would recommend this B and B to everyone! Stepping Stone Cabins was the perfect place for us to explore Waterton, Beaver Mines, and Glacier! Thanks for making our trip so great! :)

My son and I stayed here for two nights over the May long weekend and the accommodation couldn't have been better. Two well appointed cabins provided all the comforts of home and the breakfasts in the morning were fantastic. We'll be back next year for sure.

I have done lots of TripAdvisor reviews over the years -- mostly accommodations and restaurants in Alberta, BC, Washington, Oregon and Montana, but it has just occurred to me recently that I have never reviewed one of our very favourite places ever -- Stepping Stone Cabins in beautiful Beaver Mines, Alberta.

We have been coming here for almost nine years (May 2005 first visit). We used to come here several times a year, but the long drive from Edmonton, especially during the winter, was getting to be difficult for two old geezers like us. Still, our now "annual" visit to Stepping Stone Cabins is something that we look forward to all year. In fact, our last visit was August 2013 and at that time we booked for August 2014 (long weekend and Brocket Pow Wow).

If your idea of a B&B is doilies and antiques and classical music being piped in during breakfast, then Stepping Stone might not be right for you. There is the main house where the Kelly family lives and where you will have your amazingly fabulous breakfast. The rental units are two beautiful cabins, joined by a covered deck, facing into the woods. Very private. On the deck there is a bbq, a picnic table, some chairs, and a fabulous hot tub (and Kevin is absolutely meticulous about maintaining the hot tub). There's no cable in the units, but there's a VCR and there's a good selection of movies. Cell phone reception is okay, and there is internet -- if you absolutely can't completely disconnect ... though I think you'll want to. The Castle Mountain Cabin is very large ... a huge bathroom ... and a separate room with a futon. It's a great unit for families. It also has a wonderful wood-burning fireplace.

Nights are the best there. Imagine sitting in the hot tub looking at the most star-filled sky you've ever seen, or watching the snowflakes fall (as we have many times) ... listening to the occasional coyote howl. It's magical ... and so peaceful. And you will have the best sleep ever.

And after the best sleep ever, you will wake to enjoy a wonderful breakfast at the house. The hosts, Keven and Jolaine are perfect hosts, and wow -- can they make a breakfast!! We visit a lot of B&B's and have eaten a lot of great breakfasts, but nothing comes close to the magic that those two young people create in the early morning. (Amazing coffee too.) Stepping Stone is "kid and dog (I think) friendly", and yes, there are kids, a dog, and a cat on premises. Fine for us, but then, we dearly love the kids, the dog, the cat, and whole family there ... as well as the Hamlet of Beaver Mines.

There is a little kitchenette in the cabins (small fridge, microwave, dishes, cutlery, utensils) and there is the bbq on the deck. But for eating out, I have to say that there are few decent options in Pincher Creek (though that could have changed -- ask your hosts). You might have better luck with the towns in the Crowsnest. Popiels Restaurant in Coleman has been there forever, and serves up good old-school Italian food. The Rumrunner in Coleman offers basic pub grub and is sometimes amazing and sometimes just "meh" but it's a cool place. There's the Tin Roof in Blairmore, and I understand that it's changed ownership a few times. However, there is the Beaver Mines General Store very nearby. They have a lot of really good local meats -- good to bbq, as well as sandwiches, soups, and I understand from their Facebook page that they also do meals to go, which is a great idea. They also have a decent selection of beer (though none really fabulous -- try the Frank Slide Liquor Store for that), wines, and spirits. There is also a restaurant / pub down the road at the Castle Mountain Sky Resort, but not sure of it's off-season hours or availability, and to be honest, we've never eaten there.

So ... finally the end of my long-winded review. I could go on for days about the area, the Crowsnest (incredible Frank Slide). Stepping Stone Cabins are wonderful. Kevin and Jolaine are wonderful hosts who also have a deep love of the area -- they hike it, they ski it, they live it!! You'll arrive as a guest ... you'll leave as a friend.

By the way -- totally jealous of the previous reviewer who saw the bear. Kelly family: I would like to request a bear for my breakfast entertainment for the August long weekend. Thank you. :-)

The only sign that you have arrived at Stepping Stone is literally the sign. The actual cabins are not visible behind the quieting curtain of greenery (see photo). In fact, we had to look to find the path to our accommodation. The invisibility of the cabins caused us first to inquire at the neighbour's home (they use the same driveway). The rather rude neighbour implied that we were idiots for not noticing which direction "the bear on the sign is pointing"... which is very funny when you think about it... more-so when considering how small the "bear" is.

But the interaction with an unfriendly neighbour was the only downside to our stay at Stepping Stone. These cabins are very rustic in their outer appearance, but inside they are finished floor-to-ceiling in beautiful cedar, and everything is neat as could be. There is a small fridge, a microwave oven, a coffee pot (with coffee), a kitchen sink and dishes. The bathroom is very large with tub and shower. The bed is comfortable, and a small adjoining room has a foldout bed and television.

There is virtually no sound during the night, unless you count the occasional coyote's howl.

Breakfast was a hot meal with fresh-baked fruit scones, a frittata, potatoes and fruit. It was more than adequate. Just as breakfast was being served we were treated to the visit of a black bear (see photo) which ambled into the yard and posed outside the window for several minutes, not two meters from our window.

I highly recommend Stepping Stone Cabins, especially if you crave a few nights of absolute quiet.

Hi Nathan,

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide a review. We are slowly becoming more adept with websites such as this! The black bear's visit was exciting at breakfast! I ended up seeing a total of 28 bears this summer in SW Alberta/Glacier NP in Montana (4 being grizzly)... some while hiking, some from our home windows, and of course some from the car. We appreciate you mentioning the quiet night sleep. It is a true pleasure to only hear the sounds of nature while sleeping at night. I'm sorry you caught our neighbors on an "off day." They are actually quite lovely folks. All the best!

We were only able to stay 1 night as the cabin was booked but would have stayed longer if able to.Was the perfect place to unwind after the Calgary Stampede. Great cabin with outdoor seating area and hot tub. Lovely hosts who as well as making a great breakfast gave us a detailed route of where to go next on our road trip and the ideas were spot on! The general store a 5 minute walk up the road makes great homemade food if you do not wish to cook but had we stayed longer I am sure the fire pit and bar b que would have been used.

Our family of 4 enjoyed staying at Stepping Stone Cabins. It is in a tiny town of 100 about 45 minutes away from Waterton. The cabins are quaint and provide everything you need. There are two self-contained cabins that are connected by a shared bbq/hot tub/picnic table area. It would be perfect for a group travelling together and requiring 2 separate cabins. The cabins are surrounded by trees and the family's home is close by. There is an outdoor fireplace. The hosts have two nice daughters who enjoyed playing with our children. There is a play cabin for the kids. The hosts were very welcoming and provided AMAZING breakfasts using a lot of local and organic ingredients. They were able to direct us to local spots to explore and enjoy. They also catered to our kids, cutting up their breakfast and even making different "kid friendly" breakfast foods for them. It's further from Waterton than we would have liked, but a nice drive. Just be sure to stop in Pincher Creek for groceries.

We loved it! We stayed there during a ski-trip out to Castle Mountain, and will definitely return.

The location was easy enough to find, no trouble there. It's not really all that close to anything interesting, we took a drive back into town to go for dinner... but if you don't mind driving a few minutes it's in a pretty good spot between the town and the ski-hill. I'm sure there's some great summer activities to be had around there as well, it's certainly beautiful country.

The cabins themselves: There are 2 guest cabins that are side by side, and then a few dozen yards away is the main house (where the host family lives). There is a big hottub on the deck between the guest cabins with a gorgeous view... The rooms themselves make you feel right at home. Very clean, nice stuff, comfy bed, we felt right at home. Very quiet at night, we slept wonderfully.

Our hosts made us a delicious breakfast (included in the room price) and quite honestly I'd be happy to have breakfast with them on a regular basis. The food was delicious, and what truly nice people.

If you're going to stay around this area for any reason, I would DEFINITELY recommend this B&B over a hotel any time.

A fantastic experience, we will be back! :)
