“Big nice hotel, Bad service!”
Reviewed August 31, 2009

Stayed for a week. Big nice hotel. Breakfast and dinner are not 5 stars standard. Room service is BAD! Reception service is BAD and unfriendly. Very nice swimming pools (indoor and outdoor) . Using the computers is not free.
I recommend it when compared to other hotels in Golden Sand.

My husband and myself, we spent three nights this month in Melia Grand Hermitage hotel, and I totally agree with a number of reviews I read prior to our departure: the hotel rooms and ammenities are very nice, but the personnell from the front desk has a very low level of customer service capabilities. We arrived at around half last ten in the morning, and asked for our reservation, they told us to come back around noon maybe the room will be ready, then at 12 o'clock they told us that the room is not ready, to come back at 1 pm, then at half past one and so on. Their main argument was that the official checkin is at 3pm. But regardless of the official checkin time, all the people waiting in the lobby for their rooms, who came after us, got their rooms, and in the end we were the last ones in receiving our room. The staff did not show any shed of flexibility on this one, where just asking me if I understand what they are saying and that I have to wait seated. This is not the best apprach and deffinately not the best trat with an already upset customer.
Then during the stay there everything was very nice, until the moment of the checkout when the same staff let us know that we have to pay because we used minibar, which was not true. Also they showed us an invoice with a part of the payment we have made to the agency through which we travelled there, and we paid 100% of the lodging and breakfast to the agency, suppose the agency did not transfer the money to the hotel, but this was not our business, this is why I do not understand why they showed us the invoice, like they were waiting for us to pay of something.

Besides the staff issues, our stay at Melia was very nice, the rooms are huge, very clean, we had land view but were able to see the sea also and the sunset, which made it very romantic, Golden Sands is a very nice place to go and relax, I think if we would have stayed there for around one week, it would have been better, because there is a lot of commerce, there are a lot of things one can do, like restaurants, discos, clubs, bars, parties and so on.

This Melia Hotel is a shame for any 5 Star Hotel or those who pretend to be. Service, especially the reception is a catastrophe: staff is unprofessionnal, unfriendly, aggressive and no help at all if you want to have any touristic information. Basic service (as for example wake up service) is available in theory, but not even this is done correctly. The fitness room is available, but many machines are broken. The restaurant resembles a canteen: overcrowded, noisy, and the food quality is simply not worth mentioning. Food is not fresh and often the food is reserved after a few days (the yoghurt for example has been sour/expired and was uneatable, the pastry was old (every second day) there have been maggots in the salad, etc) and several guests have been ill and had to look for medical advice. Room comodities are partially out of order (ex: safe, bill), the general state of the hotel is bad (irty, badly lain carpets, crumbled paint on walls, dirty windows). the only positive thing of the hotel is its friendly staff in the spa and in the restaurants, and its location: 5 minutes walk to te (overcrowded and very touristic) beach. Not to be recommended at all!

It is a good hotel to stay, it has large rooms, with king size beds, large bathroom, with shower and bathtube and 2 sinks, the maid hads her job daily, which is normal for a 4-5 * hotel.
Other positive stuff: polite staff, large pool but inadequate for the capacity of hotel ( 727 room means at least doble the perssons) - so it is crowded; pretty close from the beach; decent meal; baby chairs.
And for the negative part( because it is ): if you arrive earlier than check in time( 15.00) you must pay 20 Euro if you want your room before that time; no private beach so you have to pay 10euro/day for 2 sunbeds and 1 table; there were just 2-3 main course at lunch/dinner, and they re-use the food; the pool bar is small, very often queue - you must wait 10-12 minutes for a glass of smth; no night activities.
Overall a good hotel but 2-3 days it is enough to spent, because you didn't have to much alternatives to spent your time .

For sure, the hotel is not at the 5-star quality of West European or American standards. It is similar to Turkish or Middle Eastern 5-star hotels. But this is the best hotel at Golden Sands. There is also Admiral hotel, but it seems like a place for criminal meetings and not a place for a family with children.
Breakfasts were delightful, room was huge, very nice pool, a lot of green around, very close to the sea and the promenade. If we return to Golden Sands, we definitely would stay at Melia again.

the hotel is great, perfect location, wonderful amenities. the room was also very nice and clean. however the service quality is very poor, especially at the front desk and in the buffet restaurant. food was quite good. not what you expect from a 5 star hotel, but still ok. great indoor and outdoor pool facilities.

depends on your purpose of stay, this hotel can be either perfect or disappointment, I think.

we liked it because:
it was right on beach, though the beach itself was not perfectly clean at the time we visited as it was off season, the view was certainly nice and the breeze!!

we only paid 50 euros for an ocean view suite (oct)

because it was off season, not many people were there, and they served us wonderful buffet style breakfast in this beautiful little decorated room. im sure that it will be a special room in summer or whenever they have more people staying.

at the breakfast table, waitress comes and takes your order for drinks, which is included, of course.

they also have pool(one with balls and pole, billiard) in their lower floor of the lobby which you can play for free, it seemed, but maybe we just didnt get charged because they didnt have enough staff in winter to find us.

the indoor swimming pool was fantastic.

we however did not like one thing about them and that is that they seemed to be "tied" with local taxi drivers who will charge you way more than that of the normal rate. (in our case, about 8 times more was charged. we know this because on the way back we asked one of our friend who is a local to get a cab for us and went the same route)

In Bulgaria or any of the USSR countries I hear it is common, and it sure was in BG.

Maybe its not so much to do with this hotel in particular, but it was unpleasant and Im writing about it in here because we asked for a taxi at the reception and they called this guy who seemed to be friends with them, spoke in Bulgarian for some minutes, then took us on a taxi which had the meter taken off not switched off and were charged in euros which is not even their currency yet.

I also noticed disturbing fact that the taxi drivers love their city so much they have to take you everywhere before they get to where you want them to.

this hotel is very far from the center or anything else other than beach, so unless you want to be at the location for the whole stay, it might pay to be prepared for lots of transport fees.
