“1st and last time”
Reviewed October 30, 2013

Take the description in the travel brochure with a pinch of salt. The promo photo shown above must have been the only time when all of the lights worked. Ok so the rooms were clean and serviced every day, fridge is a nice touch, TV only showed Bulgarian programs. Out on the balcony the light didn't work, nor did anyone else's, when we asked how to make it work we were told they are broken. Like a lot of things in Bulgaria when they break they don't get fixed. Around the pool were about as many sun loungers as could possibly fit, however, about 50% of these were broken. In the brochure it mentions a Gym, table tennis, sauna. If you want to use any of these it will cost extra, £5/hour for the gym!
I would not recommend paying for all inc unless you want to eat the same food day after day, fortunately we had chosen b&b, the breakfast was also the same every day but at least we were eating out the rest of the time. If you go room only or B&B you can upgrade to all inc. for 30Lv/day once you are there and have seen the food on offer.
The food and beer is cheap enough at Pliska not to warrant all inc, it was about the cheapest in Golden Sands.
Once upon a time Pliska was probably a nice 3* hotel but it would not be able to justify those stars if it was re-evaluated now.
For me the location was good, close enough to the action to walk in a short time but far enough away for a peaceful evening. In Golden Sands it is apparent that everyone is after every last Lev in your pocket, overcharging where they can, prices here are almost twice that of Varna. It is cheaper to pay the bus fare each way and dine in Varna than eat in Golden Sands.
We met people who have been going back to Pliska year after year, I can't imagine why.
As the title says, I will not be returning, to Pliska or Bulgaria

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view on 5th or 6th floor to avoid having to use 2 lifts but away from pool bar noise

Rooms were basic but clean, sheets and towels changed five days out of six. The fridge in the rooms is a good idea but of course it only works when you are actually in your room. Only one English language TV channel...True 2, ok if you want rubbish films, Little House on the Prairie or The Waltons!
Breakfast was disgusting, we lived on jam on toast (having to push the toast through the toaster with a fork as it was broken) and fruit. We were so glad we were not all inclusive (see photo!)! Someone was being seriously ill one evening as we passed their room!
The staff were mainly friendly.
As for Golden Sands as a resort, we liked it but if you are expecting egg and chips and everything geared up for the English then it's not for you. There is a lovely quiet beach right at the south end of the resort which you would never find unless you knew it was there...walk south from the bus stops, taking the left fork and look for two green garden sheds. Take the path in front of the sheds and this will lead to the beach, there is also a bar there that serves the best Shopka Salad or omelette we had all week.
The restaurants we found that were good are The Gibraltar right on the cross over point of the two Noddy Trains and The Asgard about 5 minutes walk uphill from the Pliska. Both good value for money.
We would return to Golden Sands but can see why it's not for everyone who's used to Spain.

The hotel was dated and very run down, the staff were not friendly or helpful, the food was horrible, reheated or over cooked, nothing was labelled so you had no idea what you were eating and it was repetitive, the hotel owners ate every night in the hotel, they certainly were not eating the food in the buffet, you were given miniature plates and cups to eat and drink from, the only good thing about the hotel was the swimming pool, I would not stay in that hotel again if you paid me.

Pliska is a cheap and cheerful hotel situated in a convenient spot in Golden Sands, Rooms are small, clean and adequate. Nothing fantastic but ok. You can go Bed and Breakfast, half board or all inclusive. If you want you can upgrade when you arrive to All Inc but the fiod was terrible so I wouldn't bother. We went B&B thankfully as everyone was complaining about the food at lunch and dinner. I have to say after having a look, it was the exact same food EVERY DAY and was mainly salad, rice, little bits of very scabby looking meat and naff sponge buns! Food which should have been warm was cold and flies were everywhere! Everything was covered in some kind of sauce, looked horrible. The hotel was full of loud Russians and rude Romanians who seemed to devour the food! They were drinking beer from 10 in the morning till 10 at night when the All Inclusive finished! Most staff spoke either Romanian or Russian as the majority of visitors to Bulgaria these days are those. The Brits are dwindling and we spoke to many restuarant owners who said the british were here 20-30 years ago but now found it not good enough!
The staff atr Pliska were ok, some were nicer than others. The maids were lovely and friendly even though they spoke no English and we spoke no Bulgarian we managed! The pool area is too small for the number of guests that could be staying at anytime! The sunbeds were packed in but around half of them were broken and had cracks in the plastic! The Romanians put their towels out on the sunbeds the night before! It seems like a Hotel that was possible once good but needs modernising, updating and bringing up to standard - it certainly would never get 3 stars in Britain! Probably 1 or 2 at a push! There were only a handul of working lights on corridors and staircases which was dangerous. Out of 20 wall lights down the corridor where our room was only 2 of the lights worked! The stairs were also mainly in darkness which I am sure is against health and safety rules but when you complain nothing gets done!
My husband wanted to use the gym which, to his disgust, he had to pay for, At £5 an hour he used it once! They also wanted £5 an hour for the sauna. Everything they could charge extra for they did.
The most strange situation was the lift. There are 9 floors at Pliska and One life serves up to floor 6 then you have to get out and walk down a long corridor to another life that took you uo to the top floor! Crazily enough, they put older and disabled people higher up the building!
The corridors were noisy too as voices echo in the tiled areas and sometimes at night and in early morning you could hear alot of voices and banging doors.
We were lucky, we had quiet neighbours and a lovely pool/tree/sea view but if you were on the other side of the hotel you got a view of next doors pool which was better but much noisier than Pliskas.
The Disco under the hotel was closed when we visited, it never opened but we didn't particularly want to go. There are other nightclubs up the road if you want them. There is not much to see or do in Golden sands. Once you have walked round the little town thats it. Its the same shops repeated all over and everything is the same price no matter if its in a supermarket or a shop or a market stall. If a sunhat is 12 levs in one shop it will be in another etc.
Eateries are plentiful but not as cheap as people made out. Steaks are around £10-£12 per meal and you may have to add your accompniments such as chips to this cost. Look for offers that say "garnish included" as this means the chips, rice, salad or veg are included. Beer varies from place to place from £1 to £2.50 for just under a pint. The cheapest wine is about £7 a bottle. You can get any food whatever you like - steak, chicken, burgers, salads, etc but traditional Bulgarian food is only served in a few places. Food ordered from the menu at Pliska was ok, same as other restuarants for value and quality.
There is a nice promenade walk along the beach and some features like a big wheel and a mini eifle tower thats a bar and dodgems but little else to see or do. You can get a bus to Varna which is an interesting city and there is a lovely big park along the sea front. Everything in Varna is half the price of stuff in Golden Sands so do your shopping there. Bus there costs £1.50. Keep you eye on your money as Romanian gypsies are rreported to use the busses to jostle and pick pocket toursists but we had no trouble and visited Varna 3 times.
The disappointing thing was all the statues and monuments, fountains and interesting buildings were covered in graffiti. It really did give the impression if a country in decline, an unhappy place with unrest. Pavements were appalling and roads bumpy. Like they never ever reapaired anything,
Its not a place we would go back to, not alot to see unless you go on a trip where they rip you off by charging you double the entrance fee up front. And then its only a couple of places that are worth seeing, If all you want is a pool, cheap beer, you are not fussy with food and don't mind a bit of noise this is the place for you. Learning Russian or Romanian might help too! The Bulgarians speak English of sorts but all the trips were commentated in Russian or Romanian so when we went on ours we had no idea what the guy was saying and just toddled off by ourselves! The guidebook helped and although we won't go to Bulgaria again, we had a nice time most of the time but feel they don't really want the English there!

Room Tip: Ask for pool view on a lower floor so you don't need to change lifts.

I am just back from a weeks stay in Pliska hotel with my family, there was 7 of us all together, when we arrived at the hotel it was midday we where given the keys to our rooms (301 & 32A) the rooms with the letters at the end of them are the end rooms which are usually for family's and are very spacious the other room was just a standard double room both had brilliant poolside views thank goodness! When we got our bearings and went down we realised that most people in the hotel where German/ polish or whatever very little English people! The staff are lovely especially Metto (metso), Naeden and Christina> she took a liking to my little girl and she loved her! The staff where so helpful and friendly, welcoming and cheery! We went B&B because of the reviews of the bad all inclusive and I am totally glad we didn't because it defiantly wasn't my cup of tea, and especially nothing catered for English people the all inclusive is catered to the Germans, but all food was always ate and sometimes did look nice so it depends if you are a fussy eater or not? Because the all inclusive wasn't great we were weary of eating in the hotel but Metto persuaded us to and.... It was the BEST food on the golden sands resort we had! So beautiful homemade food! We had 3 chicken soup, 1 Greek salad, 2 steak, 1 chicken mozzarella (amazing) 1 chicken Julian (amazing) again! 1 pizza and 1 spagetti Bol, 7 cokes, 6 beer and 6 cider and 3 vodka! And all together it was 98 lev!!! So £40-50 for 7 people to eat and drink not only did we have amazing food it was extremely good value! We ate here the last 3 days! The rooms where cleaned thoroughly daily and given new towels and loo paper, baring in mind there was 6 floors!! The pool was great for the kids and there is a little park and tables around so easy to keep eye on children! The only downfall is that there was no children entertainment but everything else made up for it! Also free air condition in each room. 30 lev for safety deposit box, small beer 1 lev (40-50p) large tank beer 2 lev spirits 3 lev I think but really well priced so cheap! Also the hotel has its own shop which is great too! Again another tip if you want a sun bed put your towel out night before because you never get
One I'm the morning!! Excellent hotel will definitely be back! Loved it!

The hotel its self is ok. Most staff are generally helpful. However, the food is unedible most times. I was there for a fortnight on a half board basis, wish I only had B&B because that was bad enough. Most food which should have been hot was cold and things like fruit juice and cut fresh fruit were warm. Wasnt a great deal of variety compared to some other Golden Sands and Albena hotels I have stayed in. Table cloths on tables were sometimes dirty and often each morning I would pick up a chipped or cracked cup. Apart from the food, the other disadvantage was that there is only one lift for the whole of the hotel.

Pool area nice, except if you want to get a sunbed you need to put a towel down and reserve a sunbed by 7:00am or they would have all gone! There is a notice to say No Reserving, but no one takes any notice of this and the hotel doesnt implement any rules to stop this happening.

Hotel reception very friendly and helpful. Still best value is to just go B & B, as outside restaurant and bars offer better standard food and choice. At the Admiral Hotel is an, on the hour, and 15 minutes sequence, train trip through the coastal road, as far as the marina, with 4 excellent bar/restaurants at the end, with such delicacies as MUSSELS for 8 Lev. Stop the train where you want to get on, or off, by a whistle or hand wave! If you fancy a swim without soaking your swimwear, a friendly bar offers great drinks, limited food, but a nice friendly, uncomplicated NUDIST BEACH.
Surrounding the hotel is a good selection of quality evening entertainment, and if you like the 'singing guitar', find the poster advert for DEON, on the way to the train. A night worth visiting for his musicianship, and strange mumbled humour! HOTEL STILL EXCELLENT VALUE FOR MONEY, plus also a trip to see Jerry, who runs HURRY RAMSDENS on the front, for a cheap pint, and English style meal!
Are we going again after the last 5 years trips?
YOU BET!

Room Tip: 2nd floor seems to be quietest rooms 213 or 215 especially.
