“excellant hotel”
Reviewed June 21, 2010

This is an excellant hotel obviously managed to a high standard - rooms are spacious and a good 4 star standard but main rooms and food are a good 5 star tourist rate. Lovely out door pool and beautiful indoor pool and spa. Plenty sitting areas inside and out. Waiters and cleaners were always smart, friendly and with a smile. Sunny beach offers a mixed quality of hotel standard and tourist 'type' and caters for all ages 24 hours a day.
The Helena Sands offers quality accommodation with peace in lovely surroundings but within a minutes walking distance to all the shops, eating houses and night life on the beach front. I could highly recommend this hotel.

Coach transfer from Burgas airport was about 20-25 minutes but we didn't hear any aircraft noise once we were there.

Arrived at hotel and check in was quick even though it was very early in the morning and there were a few other people checking in too. Reception staff seemed to speak both German and English well.

Room was very clean. Really decent size - twin beds, sofa, tv, coffee table, dressing table, and bathroom had great shower over the bath (and removable fixture so you could wash your hair over the bath if you prefer not to do it in the shower!). Decent sized balcony with table and two chairs and we were really pleased we got a sea view as it really was a great view. (plus the sun stayed with us until about 5.30 - 6pm)

Maids did rooms every day (towel change was optional) and they were very flexible about when they did it which was great.

Breakfast buffet was 7.00 - 10.30 and there was lots of choice - cooked stuff, cereal, fruit and continental. You could sit anywhere - even outside.

Dinner was in two sittings (we had the later 8 - 9.30) and you were given a table on your first night which you had for the whole trip. Choice was vast - meat, salads, pasta, pizza which they did their best to change each night although some things were a staple. Then cakes, ice cream and fruit, and cheese and biscuits.

Drinks in the hotel were the most expensive we came across in the whole resort but we didn't venture into other 5 star hotels to see what their prices were like which we bet are the same! Bars were charging anything from about 45p for a half litre of local lager to £1.50. Average was about 2 levs - approx £1. On cocktails it's happy hour all day long - so you get two drinks but they are twice the price - still only about 7 levs (£3.50) for two.

The pool area is dominated by the large ornamental dome!!!! A tourist attraction it seems. Plenty of sun beds but we were there in Sept so wondered if you would struggle in peak season.

The hotel bar and outside seating area were nice enough - and quiet too (They did have a screen showing football and also put on entertainment most nights). The older people seemed to like to stay there whilst the younger people ventured into the main Sunny Beach area which is loaded with bars.

The hotel is situated at the quiet end of a massive stretch - ideal as you could easily walk to the main area in 5-10 minutes. That's not to say it's isolated just at the quiet end of town.

There was a spa (i only had a pedicure though it seemed very nice) and the indoor pool although quite small was very nice and had a jacuzzi area) My boyfriend used the weights and rowing machine and although basic said they were good.

Great holiday and very relaxing.

the weather was awful, i know it was last year but was cold, about 20c and rained often. we were told this is normal weather in September. The resort is a bit poor, roads and footpaths prone to flooding and lots of potholes. if it were cheaper it would be tollarable but prices were much like at home. there is a lot of poverty in bulgaria so be prepared for that. I guess they need the tourist dollar. if the weather was better and you stayed by the pool would be ok. !!!

We have just got back from Sunny Beach, the Hotel was lovely and very clean, rooms very clean and big if you have a sea view. staff ok, entertainment - crap, they need more staff in the Lobby bar, you had to wait ages to be served. Food in the Hotel, not bad, a lot of choice, but not 5* food. Also the waiters seem to take your plate away when the person you are with hasen't finished eating, very rude I thought. We had one sunny day in all, mostly rain. We spoke to another couple and they went to the resort last year and it rained, so they decided to go a week earlier this year and it rained. Would not recomend going in Sept as the weather is a bit hit and miss. The River tour is a waste of money, we didn't see any wildlife at all, the tour guide blamed it on the weather. Plenty of eating places and not bad prices. Lots of pebbles and stones on the beach, 7lv for a bed and 7 lv for an umberela. Apart from the bad weather we enjoyed it, beats work anytime but we should have gone a month earlier. Would not go back to Bulgaria again, think we will stick to the med.

The hotel is lovely and clean and is on the quiet side of the resort. Our room was on the 8th floor and it was a bit on the small side plus the view wasn't great if you end up with a none sea view room.
The beach is clean but you will get charged to use the sun loungers and the umbrella (It costs 7LV for each item).

Considering it's a 4* hotel we expected an iron to be in the room but there wasn't so pack a travel iron (They expect you to use the on site laundry service). Also there is no kettle in the room either.
Sunny beach is a very busy resort and due to it being packed with tourists it is expensive and they don’t like to haggle either. If you go outside the resort you can find the same items at a cheaper price plus you can haggle with them.
There are lots of places to eat out and also loads of supermarkets (you’re spoilt for choice)
Take a visit to Nessbar, it’s very picturesque and it only cost 1LV by bus but by taxi it cost about 25LV.
Due to the poor drainage system the smell isn’t very pleasant but Nessbar is still worth a visit.

Basically we went at the wrong time of the year, last week of the season and god could you tell. Sunny beach is in my opinion, nothing more than a hovel. The street lighting, the roads the footpaths the lack of any drainage system the SMELL!!! all awful!!!!!! If you go here...well on your head be it. I would strongly recommend leaving it for 20 years or so, it may have caught up with the likes of Spain and Turkey by then. The hotel helena beach wasnt that bad, but it wasnt 5 star as we were told not in comparison to Spains 5 stars.

Do not be pushed into the tours either cause they're the biggest joke going. The river boat trip CRAP, CRAP and dare i say it CRAP!!! Or the trip to anyone of the idillic local towns??? more like a disaster zone with little or nothing to do apart from sit on the beach or get drunk (which most people on our tour did just that).

I cant say anymore than that. if you still go after this report. On your head be it!!!!!!

Loved our stay here - definitely the best hotel in Sunny Beach! Hotel itself is excellent and well presented with a relaxed atmosphere, we had spacious modern room with amasing views over pool & beach .. the restaurant offers good food with a wide choice .. pool area is absolutely stunning!

Found some of the staff to be very rude on occasions but they warmed up after a while .. and as another review mentions the constant stream of people coming in to have their photo taken next to the water feature does get annoying when you're trying to relax by the pool and you are a paying guest!

Only down points are with the resort itself are previously mentioned by other reviewers e.g. over pricing of drinks & taxi's, gypsies and lots Russian prostitutes etc so you do have to have your wits about you ... also not as cheap there are you're lead to believe its an expensive resort - unfortunately you can't have a night out on 25levs anymore!

Really enjoyed out stay here & definitely would go back!

  • Liked — The amasing pool area!
  • Disliked — The occasioanl rudeness/ abruptness of the staff
