“Spotless ...but you can't see Gastroentiritis acuta can you?”
Reviewed August 14, 2011

We just returned from the Majestic on Sat 13th Aug 2011. The place is totally immaculate, the sunbeds are really comfortable with plenty available if you get to the pool by 10am. The animation team were good fun and did a good job entertaining different senses of humour from Ireland to Russia!!!

The rooms were large and comfortable, but I will say the sofa bed in the lounge which we slept on giving the boys the privacy in the main bedroom was akin to torture!
The climate is superb, warm and a dry heat (no humid conditions as you get in the Carribean for example). We did have one day of VERY strong winds and heavy rain...but that was described as freak weather by the locals.
The food, was plenty and varied, although you didn't need to be a rocket scientist to see some food clearly being recycled from the previous day.
This is where our one week went sour!!!
From Wednesday to our flight home, my 9 and 11 year old sons and I were struck down with acute gastroentiritis. Without going into detail ....48 comfort breaks in 2 days with stabbing cramps made our holiday and flight home a disaster.
One thing I learned about Bulgarians is, they have a definate "not my fault guv" policy.
Nothing was anyone's fault as we politely tried to explain that something was wrong....."all our food is fresh every day" was the response....clearly it wasn't as leftovers may well have been stored incorrectly. Likewise, the Bulgarian speciality restaurant served me grilled chicken which was red inside and still bleeding. When I complained , they said , it's impossible to cook everyones meal at the same time, so that is how it had to come out"....there were 3 tables occupied in the restaurant at the time!!!!

To summarise, the hotel was stunning.
The beach was very well maintained on a daily basis.
The food was suspect although tasty and a great choice......
The service was not as I've come to expect in the Caribbean, but then this is Eastern Europe.
The people were very friendly.

Be warned....the Majestic is at the "posh end " of Sunny Beach...and hence you tend to pay posh prices compared to the rest of the resort.

One final thing....if you have kids, the "cool gadget" in Sunny Beach is a green laser pen. The "Gypsy market-paki shop" (The traders words not mind!!!) sell them for 25-30 LEV. Do yourself a favour, order one for each of your kids from e-bay at £5.99 before you go! My son had a faulty one, took it back and it was another case of "not my fault guv"!!!!

Overall....nice place, but will probably just tick it off and move onto my next country to explore.

We were lucky enough to book one of the family suites on the seafront which was pure luxury. I stayed with my two children. Felt very safe in the area where the Majestic is situated (north of Sunny Beach). Delighted with the suite, the food, staff couldnt do enough for you but did expect tipping for everything. Pools were great. We found the Bulgarian people to be so friendly and helpful which makes a refreshing change for a Brit abroad!! The beach was beautiful although there were alot of jellyfish in the sea so we didnt go in. Would definately return to that hotel and the sea view made the holiday as we sat out for hours til the early hours admiring the fantastic view. We were very sad to leave

Brilliant hotel and excellent pools. Probably the biggest swimming pools in the resort. comfy sunbeds which we did not reserve. Always got somewhere by the pool.
Lovely spacious hotel, large rooms. We booked a family room and got a bedroom and huge living room with sofa bed for kids with a kitchenette and double balcony with a great sea view. Just found beds a bit hard and no black out curtains.
There was entertainment in the day for kids and adults and in the evening - mini
disco at 7.30 and evening entertainment at 9.30pm in the nightclub. this varied from karaoke to bingo to shows - some better than others.
Food was excellent - meat especially, loads of choice - something for everyone. We tended to have breakfast outside and dinner inside.
Rep was very helpful and a local so knew everything.
Resort was very busy, plenty to do and buy. Horse and cart, fish spa, mini train, loads of minigolf courses, inflatables for the kids, lovely beach bars with sofas or hammocks.
The road between the hotels and beach is pedestrianized except for goods vehicles.
Plenty of excellent fast food cafes and ice cream kiosks or slush puppies/donuts etc

Get the bus to Nessebar only 1 Lev per adult. Worth seeing and having lunch then best to get boat back 30 mins. Also catamaran cruise goes from Nessebar ( London bus from hotel to harbour) and is 4 hrs and excellent although we didn't see dolphins on our trip.
The local waterpark action aquapark was fine for all of us ( 2 adults and 8 yr and 4 yr olds) and we went there 3 times as free with our booking. It was only 5 mins in free shuttlebus from hotel.

Cleanest hotel ever stayed in - food rubbish and cannot believe Thomson are making this part of their platinum range next year. Last year we stayed inthe limak lara in turkey which is also part of the platinum range and it knocks socks off this hotel

Me and my boyfriend both aged 21 - 23 qrrived in the early hours, speedy check in and taken straight to our room. At the time of booking on Thompsons website sea view room was not availible so after booking I emailed the hotel asking if it would be possible for upgrade on arrival. We were given a room with a MASSIVE balcony, sea view was brilliant! Even better we were not charged any extra!

Beds were very comfy got a great sleep every night. There was a phone in the wall beside the toilet in bathroom (not sure why?)

The service was great, towels were replaced everyday and the maids tidyed our room daily. Our room was a tip most days but everything was folded and piled up neatly by the time we got back :)

Pool + beach also great! There are jellyfish in the water in the sea but they dont sting, most of them are tiny.

Had a tour of the spa which was lovely, decided to get shoulder and neck massages which was very relaxing!

Even tho we were half board we never once made the 7am - 10am breakfast (too lazy or hungover) I would image it would have been very good tho! We eat in the hotel for dinner twice, food was pretty good lots to choose from (deserts were amazing!)

Dionis was our Thompson rep he was great very helpful, when we asked about where to go for Tiesto tickets he sorted the whole thing out for us. :)

We booked a VIP Catamaran cruise, i recommend this to anyone! it waso nly 100lev (50 quid) per person. It took you out for about 5 hours. If your quick you can lye on one of the nets up the front of the boat. The price includes all your drinks (juice , beer + wine) a light lunch and they stop so you can jump in the water. Highlight of the day was the Dolphins swimming alongside the boat on the way back !

We mainly stuck to the beach front, the strip is lined with beachbars, party pubs, shops and restraunts. Loads for everyone to do young or old!
As for all the bad things I heard about beggars & crime we saw absolutly nothing the whole week and we were out till 4 - 5 in the morning some nights!

One of the best places we eat was the steakhouse across from the majestic!

Would recommend Sunny Beach & Majestic to anyone :)

Downside - food not always as hot as it could be but was always being refreshed and pleanty to choose from. Reception staff are not as friendly as you would consider they should be but otherwise a great place to stay, far enough away from main centre not to be disturbed and only 15 min walk into the centre. Or take the bus for 50p! Rooms well furnished with adequate cooking facilities - hob, microwave, toaster on hand - fridge kept beers cold but don't expect ice!. We were 1/2 board but did venture into town for lunch which can be a 2 course with wine/beer for £4.50 each looking over the sandy beach.

The hotel Majestic is one of the most lovely hotels we have ever stayed in. Staff work so hard to keep it this way. Rooms and all areas are spotless and well kept. If you are booked to stay here you are in luck.
The resort itself is varied and there is something for everyone. Bungy jumping, quad biking, massage etc. One really good thing about this resort is that although staff will try to get you to visit their bars and restraurant the are not at all pushy and all say 'maybe later?' If you have a sense of humour and you have a laugh with them you will get discounts too. There is a mile long strip in this resort and as you walk towards the centre the bars become more lively - just as they would in most resorts or cities. We had our 11 year old son with us and we found this to be no issue. If you don't like the bar or find the area too lively we went elsewhere. There is plenty of choice. Although there are signs for strip bars and sex shops they are far more subtle than the ones we have seen in London and present no problem. As anywhere if you look for them you will find them again the choice is yours. There are in places charges for the toilet but to be honest i would happily pay in order to use clean and decent ones. Is 20p too much when the toilets are cleaned regularly? I don't think so. Be aware that tourism is appreciated in Bulgaria and the people strive to keep the area clean. If you don't want to pay for the toilet go into one of the hotels and use theirs, they do not mind and it is free. Quite rightly if you decide to p*** in the street or surrounding area you will be fined just as you would at home in England. Enjoy the hotel and the resort, i would happily go back in a heartbeat.
