“cheap”
Reviewed April 30, 2008

we stayed at the marvel for 2 wks on half board, we ate once at the hotel we found the food was never hot, but eating out was dirt cheap, found a couple of good restaurants food was good, drink was very cheap buy one and get one free, and the beach was lovely you had to pay for sunbeds and if you wanted the parasol that was extra as well, hired a car and saw a bit of the country roads are terrible. we were in sunny beach 2005 and in oct 07 i didn't notice any big increase in the prices, as bulgaria ...was not in the eu in 05. We did notice a lot more beggars second time there especially outside the hotels women sitting outside with young babies and kids, or sometime they would hang about the cash dispensers, but wouldn't hesitate to go back again

I booked this hotel after reading reviews about it. I thought it was great. Lovely and clean. The main bar is 24hr, so late arrivals can have a drink before settling down for the night. Plenty of late night shops and bars. Bulgaria is very cheap. How long it stays that way is another thing. The pool gets very crowded, and the fact that you have to pay to use the loungers is a bit off. Dom the tour rep was great. A very funny guy. Heed every word he says about the biketaxis and the normal taxis. Use the train to get around, very cheap, like every thing. Make sure you visit Nessebar. Very nice place to visit.

The thing I liked most about Sunny Beach is the was you can go to other hotels and see what they are like and if you fancy have a cooling beer whilst doing so.

Have a great time if you go.

  • Liked — The place was very clean and close to restruants and bars
  • Disliked — Paying for the sun loungers

We stayed here in Sept, 07 and I have to say it was a lovely hotel. We were on the 6th floor over looking the pools. Our room was big and airy and it was cleaned every day - well when I say it was cleaned every day - it was tidied and the bed made, The bed was 2 singles stuck together ! Bit of a dip in the middle !!! Breakfast each morning was buffet with the usual cheese, bread, fruit, and then some eggs - boiled, srcrambled or fried.
I don't know if you would call the waiting staff rude or was it just that they didn't understand us ???? There was one blonde one in particular that never cracked a smile. Had a puss on 24-7. The chef was friendly. The girls at the front desk were nice as well. We could deal with the dolls in the dining room not cracking a smile but not in the bar !! You would not want to be thirsty waiting for a drink that is for sure. One night we sat up at the bar dreaming of a nice cocktail for myself and a pint of the local brew for himself and after 20 minutes of trying to get " Paddy's" attention we just left. The service in the bar was the worst I have ever come across. Paddy was no more a Paddy and could not handle taking more than 1 order at a time. I dunno maybe it's me and am used to getting served pretty pronto( helps that my significant other has a bar ) but this took the biscuit. I know it's not the be all and end all but you know yourself at the end of a hard day lounging at the beach or at the pool of the Marvel which I have to say was bleedin BALTIC all you want is a nice "night cap" my advice is to bring your night cap with you and be prepared to fall asleep waiting at the bar for service !

Saying all that I would go back to the Marvel Hotel but I would know not to be thirsty at the end of the night,

We have just returned from a week's stay at Hotel Marvel, which is located at the quieter end of Sunny Beach. The Marvel is modern-looking and exceptionally clean, both in the rooms and foyer area (the maid seems to be cleaning the foyer 24/7 .. we decided she was a robot as she was always there just sweeping!), the rooms are spacious with plenty of wardrobe/drawer space, large pleasant balconies, but really tiny TV with only news channels in English.

The surrounding hotels are all built very close together and the back of the Marvel, where the small pool area is located, is overlooked by the larger hotel, The Victoria Palace, which is on the beach. You walk through the Victoria P to get to the beach. Our room overlooked the main road at the front, but wasn't too noisy as we were on the 6th floor.

And now the not so good points: Firstly, the service in the dining room needs to be greatly improved and sharpened up. Tables are not laid out with cutlery, glasses, etc. and they quickly run out of cups (grab yourself a cup as soon as you walk in for breakfast), (one night I ate ice-cream with a fork because there were no spoons). Not many staff on duty in the dining room so when we managed to ask for more cups/cutlery, etc. it took absolutely ages for any clean ones to appear. There is no water available at the table, unless you want to pay for bottled water Again, ordering drinks at dinner was very slow, it took requests to 3 different staff until our bottle of wine finally appeared (the cheaper wine on the menu is very, very good. The food is not replenished quick enough and 30-45 mins before the end, is not replenished at all. One night the chef was cleaning the griddle and turning off the lights and the ice-cream fridge as people were still coming in for dinner, with over half-hour to go before closing. Also, last Saturday the hotel hosted a convention; they put a few notices around at the very last minute changing the dinner time and closing the dining room early. As we had been out all day we didn't see the notices and along with a few other people and after making a great fuss with the manager, we were seated in the A La Carte restaurant (which I never saw anyone eating in during the week). We were fobbed off with a small salad, 3 stale rolls and a "vegetarian selection by the chef" consisting of luke warm peppers with tomato sauce and 2 stuffed vine leaves, all of which looked like left-overs .... we ended up walking up and paying over at the Chinese Restaurant opposite the hotel. This was excellent, the best meal of the holiday and cheap (with wine about £15 for 2 of us) - thoroughly recommended.

All in all the food is okay - nothing special. There is a choice of meat dishes but these are always in a stew/sauce, etc. Lots of dishes are cheese-based .... sauces, cheese pastries, etc. which suited me as I am v egetarian. There was fish some nights, which again was okay.

Beware of the prices at the bar - we were charged between 15 Levs and 10.80 Levs for 2 gin & tonics on different nights, depending what barman was serving. We went to Happy Hour over at the Victoria Palace and paid 16 Levs for 4 G&T, but the beach bar opposite the Majestic charged 10 Levs for 4 G&T.

We sat on the beach most days - we paid 18 Levs for 2 sunbeds and an umbrella. The beach is lovely, as is the sea. We had wonderful weather, around 28C, although we were told the week before it had been raining and chilly.

We had one excursion to the Bulgarian Evening - it was great fun
and although geared to tourists, there were a couple of rustic gift shops and traditional dancing, etc.

But an absolute must is to go to Nessebar. Get the bus, under 1 Lev each way. Nessebar has lots of little shops, great restaurants, cobbled streets, and is very pretty.

Our holiday was basically what we wanted, a cheap late week lying in the sun. I would not go back to Bulgaria - there is nothing special to see or do. The busy part of Sunny Beach is tacky, someone described it as the Benidorm of the Balkans, would probably appeal to groups of youngsters who want to drink cheaply/disco etc.

The Marvel is okay - average. Certainly not a 4 star hotel, I would rate it just a 3 star and this is only because of its location near the beach and the fact that it is so clean; service and food needs to be greatly improved.

I was really happy with the Hotel Marvel, it is a 2 min walk to the main strip and the rooms are very spacious, comfortable and clean and also a very big bathroom and nice shower.Food wasnt great, we had half board and only ate in the hotel once, food is generally not great in Bulgaria but you can do better than the hotel food and its not expensive. all in all very good experience, lovely layout to the hotel, nice bar, one of the better resor hatels ive been in, Victoria palace across the way is a lot grander looking though

We were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. We had opted for 3* BB location on arrival, so we were very pleased to get this 4* hotel.

The hotel is very clean, rooms are cleaned every day and they are very spacious. The pool area is nice and clean and as there is a kid’s pool there aren't too many running about.
The hotel is very well equipped with restaurant, bureau de change, hairdresser, beautician, indoor gym and pool, outdoor pool and bar. It’s also only 2 mins from the beach and all the bars, restaurants etc on the main strip.

The staff aren't the most helpful, particularly the barman, who was just plain rude. But then I found this with a lot of Bulgarians, I think that’s just how they are.

The breakfast was very good, catered for all tastes. There are a lot of Germans and Scandinavians, as well as British and Irish at the hotel.

On the whole I would say it’s a hotel that is more suited to couples, or families with older children. It’s a very modern, clean and well run hotel.
