“a poor choice of a balkin holiday”
Reviewed August 11, 2011

THE GOOD
this is a bit of a mixed review ,i have been to bulgaria for ski holidays and have previously booked with Balkin holidays on half board basis.
I studied a lot of the hotels in sunny beach before eventually picking the grand oasis .the main features i was looking for were a one bedroom apart hotel and that it had a large swimming pool. i got these points spot on.
the hotel accommodation first class big and airy ,air con in both rooms, large pool facing balcony that with luck caught the last of the suns rays (till 7.00 ).
the hotel had a good central position close to the beach and to the centre of town 5 min walk to each.supermarket resturant pubs right on the door step.
maid service to the rooms was first class ,with towels replaced every day and room cleaned to a good standard, any time you met the maids there was always a smile and a hello.
trip for a good day out is the water park at nessebar, superb, well supervised catering well priced good entertainment and the rides were a real top end thrill.
trip for a good night out khans tent ,good meal good entertainment ,skip the reps and book direct saves £6 a head
THE BAD
we took advantage of the half board upgrade, having previously experienced Bulgaran hotel cusine we thouht we could have at least used it for about half the week.
the resturant, 30 tables, was no where near big enough for the size of the hotel, 150 rooms.on our first night at the resturant it had run out of soup and deserts ,when we complained we were told there had been a large group in earlier an eaten all the food. The next day we complained to the catering manager and our rep ,with the result that late afternoon we had delivered to our room a bottle of wine (£3.00 from the supermarket )and a large bowl of fruit,(fruit free with every meal),however its was a nice jesture.
when we went for our eveing meal that night we had to wait around to find a table ,when you did find we had to clear it and clean it. on the 6 occassioans we did use the resturant all of the food was served cold, they were actually using the bain maries to warm the food.no salt /peper or oils on a table constantly having to go searching when you ask the staff the said sorry they are all being used .no one every cleared up around the serving areas .serving ladles were used for what ever dish a person served, spilages on the floor across the resturant were just left ,on the rare occasions the floor was cleaned it was tiurned in to a skating ring with the excess water left on the tiled floor.
our complaints to the staff fell on deaf ears.
our constant complaints then effected the service we recieved at reception ,when asking at recepion where the nearest chemists was we were told they didn't know, despite the fact that it was across the street from the main entrance
THE UGLY
as a previous traveler had commented, notices had been put up no sun beds reserved before 7.00am,if you did't book a bed by 8.00 they were all gone. The most annoying bit is that thes beds would go mostly unused for most of the day.there were only in the region of 60 beds in total surrounding the pools ,the hotel has 150 rooms i'll let you do the maths.
then the final straw on the rare occassion we did manage to secure beds it was the start of 3 days of excavaction works around the pool i appreciate that maintenance works have to be done but surly not at the peak of the season and not without any sort of appology.
the pool side bar was dreadful no atmosphere and the music was just constant drum and bass .(don't peg me as and old stuffed shirt i go to more concerts/festivals than most)

we have stayed at the barcelo royal beach and the oasis, although the barcelo is a beautiful hotel, trying to get round the pool after 8am was a nightmare it was to busy and there was no room at all to relax, the oasis on the other hand was by far the better option, whatever the time of day there was room round the pool, the rooms were immaculately maintained and very generous, they were lovely and had everything we required, the staff were friendly, and very relaxed, the location was fantastic, not to far that you couldnt walk to the beach the strip or wherever, but far away enough so as not to have the noise from the bars , we are definately booking again for next years and wouldnt consider staying anywhere else

Having booked a Hotel room bed and breakfast, we arrived at 4.00am and were shown to our room. Imagine our surprise to have a one bedroomed apartment that was huge. Our room overlooked the pool area and was very clean and spacious. If you have a boiler in your bathroom, make sure it is switched on for plenty of hot water.

The safes our located in reception and cost 5 lev per day. Air con is free and temperature controls in the room. There is a hairdryer in the bathroom, although I prefer to use my own.

Breakfast was okay, perfectly adequate. There was one small domestic toaster for the whole restaurant but this broke during our second week and wasn’t replaced by the time we left. Plenty of rolls so we tended to have a bacon roll. There was chocolate croissants, fruit, yoghurt and hot/warm food. We took our own tea bags and the hot water wasn’t always red hot but enough to have a cup of tea. If you have an apartment, take a kettle with you, or you can buy them out there quite cheap, as there is only a coffee machine supplied, although you can boil water in a pan on the two rings.

There was a race for sunbeds and to be honest, there weren’t nearly enough for the amount of guests. At the end of our first week, a group of guests reserved 18 sunbeds by 12.30am on the Friday night and never took their towels off these beds for 3 days. A lot of guests complained about this and by the time we left, there were signs up that no beds to be reserved before 7.00am and all towels to be removed by 7.00pm. There were mattresses supplied for the majority of the beds.

The pool was quite cold when you first get in, but once in, it was lovely. The only area of the pool where I could touch the bottom was around the bar area and the gentle steps but it sloped away quite quickly towards the middle of the pool. The 25m pool was a godsend to me and I managed to do my 32 lengths every morning in peace. Heaven.

Someone asked me to check out the lifts for a large pushchair/wheelchair. There are two lifts in reception and quite large, 8 person maximum and a panoramic lift, 10 person maxium and while we were there, someone came in with a large wheelchair and there was more than enough room.

We didn’t actually use the Venezia Restaurant on site, as we prefer a salad for lunch and from what I could see, it was mostly pizza or pasta on offer.

Restaurants I would recommend. Jupiter Steak House – from the pool area, turn right and walk about 200 yards or so down the road. You may well see Niko outside with a mexican hat on. Fab steaks and food always hot. Good service and staff really friendly. Local spirits and mixers were two for the price of one all day. The owner of this restaurant also owned the China House, just around the corner and huge portions and good value in here too. Egg Fried rice enough for two people. Ask about this restaurant outside Jupiter and they may give you a ticket for a free drink.

Malinas – just a bit further on from Jupiter for salads and lunch. Large beer 0.98 lev.

Steak House Atol, along the main road to the traffic lights and turn right down towards the market area. Special offer was pizza with chips and a small beer for 7.50 lev. Local beer in here was 1.50 lev. Carry on down this road to Djannys but if you want an evening meal in here, get there by 7.00pm otherwise you will have to queue.

Big hotel, very spacious, rooms were huge!
Staff were all friendly, made our stay an enjoyable one.
Only thing I could fault would be the pool. It's very big but the water was freezing! Ye got used to it tho :)

Stayed at the Oasis 28/6/10 10 nights b/b
Pool area spotless, pool a bit on the cold side as pool is shaded but once you are in lovely.
Ideally situated for restuarants/as we were b/b didn't have a bad meal yet,and prices very good.
Short walk if you wanted to go to beach just across the road pass the tennis courts ie.red lion pub and walked through Grand Hotel.

we found this to be a good hotel only 5 minutes from the beach and 5 minutes from the main drag. We stayed B and B. The breakfast was ok, fruit, melons, cooked breafast consisting of bacon, fried egg and beans. The coffee was ok. We were travelling 2 adults and 2 childrens and had a 1 bedroomed apartment with a separate living area. There was a supermarket 20 seconds from the pool and we would buy drinks and ice lollies from there. A can of local beer was 1.60 lev. A pint at the pool bar was only 2 lev. There is a safety deposit box at reception which was 5 lev per day but the rooms were safe and it wasn't really needed. One day our key card wouldn't work and the door wouldn't lock. It was going to take a couple of hours before the maintenance man would arrive. I had to take the valuables to the pool while we waited. i messed on with the lock and got it to work. The pool is large and clean. The pool bar is good however they serve glass bottles and pints. One was smashed in the pool area. Sunny beach is very cheap and we eat out every dinner and evening. We will definately go back to the same hotel.
