We stopped at the Riu Helios at the start of June for a week. We had temperatures in the 30's, cloudless days - however the week before had apparently been alternating wet and dry. The hotel has two pools and is a short walk from the sea. The water in the sea and pool was cool, however this was nice to cool of from the very warm afternoons. Hotel room was larger than average and had a balcony. Unfortunately the balcony faced the road and there was some noise at night, but it did benefit from the evening sun whilst waiting for dinner. Some rooms (floor 2) do not have balconies and it was one of these rooms we were given for 30 minutes to shower at the end of the final day - at no cost (late check out is available at a cost). We didn't use the aircon as the room was at a pleasant enough temperature. A safe was 40 lev for a week. towels are provided for the sun beds. We never had trouble getting a sunbed at any time of the day, even though it was half-term - dont know whether that'll be the same in August! We went all inclusive and found the drinks pretty much as expected (I liked the local beer, it seemed better than many others I have tried) from 10 till midnight. We really enjoyed the food, many items were cooked in the dinning room and as a consequently were fresh and hot. Food from the kitchen (ie lasagne, veg, etc) was also very hot. Empty trays were quickly restocked with the only waits for freshly cooked food was when there was a run on it before you arrived! Puddings were varied and fine, some interesting ones on the themed evening. Always ice cream available. Diet drinks were restrictive, only diet Pepsi available out of bottles, but we saw that as an advantage rather than a pump mixed offering. There are two separate restaurants (Asian and Bulgarian) and these are fixed menu, waiter service - we did both and the were very good, all the more so given there was no extra charge. Staff in all areas were attentive and efficient, the only let down was the entertainment, this was either the entertainment team trying their best (I am sure) or guest musicians. I cant fault the team's enthusiasm to entertain but the hotel would do well to concentrate in this area.

Room Tip: balcony overlooking pool would be a good request unless evening sun is required. Floor 2 has many without balconies. We had 4123 that was restricted view over the street but did have evening sun

We have just returned from 7 nights holiday . This was the first time in a Riu Hotel and we were very pleased. Clean hotel, nice and large rooms, very friendly staff, good food and plenty of choices....however the Sunnybeach resort is not suitable for families ( only for younger families without children )

Just returned from a week at the Helios with my husband with the following observations:

Hotel location: Easy walking distance of shops and town centre with the beach being just outside the hotel across the promade.
Lobby: Bright with plenty of seating
Weather: Awful, lots of rain
Retaurant: Plenty of choice and food very good.
Waitors: Miserable and can't wait to take your plate away from you even before you have finished eating.
Bar Salon Staff: Happy and helpful
Entertainment Team: Absolutley fantastic
Pool Area: Pools clean but cold, pleanty of sunbeds
Rooms: Good size and clean but beds very low

Sunny Beach as a resort is full of sex shops and sex clubs which is not advertised in any of the brochures making it unsuitable for families. We were woken in the early hours of each morning by a group of men who visited the clubs every night and returned to their rooms noisy and drunk, the following day they would congregate around the pool area swearing and shouting about their sexual conquests etc from the previous evening, not what most people want to hear!
When out and about you are pestered by men trying to give you cherries but if you say a firm no thankyou they will leave you alone. We didn't see any beggars or hear of any pickpockets, however, an older lady at the hotel was mugged and suffered facial injuries.

I wouldn't return to this resort again.

We have just returned from 7nights break. Hotel is lovely staff are nice rooms are fine.yep there is a que for the food ESP breakfast however this is the norm I guess. The resort it's self sunny beach is a nightmare, beggars along the strip mostly children, cherry pickers, bars & clubs charging so many different prices from one day to the next!! Having worked in the travel industry for 20yrs I personally would not recommend sunny beach resort..you have to have your whits with you esp walking along the strip, people do try & rip people off so much esp Brits. I would personally stick with Spain, Greece knowing you would feel safer.

just returned from another enjoyable holiday at riu helios. visited last year, and really had a good time again.tony, smarty marti, chris, alex, and rocky all kept us well entertained as the weather was not too good.the food was the same high standard with two themed restaurants for an alternative.rooms were cleaned every day and are very spacious.pool bar and area around was good with no waiting at the bar!drinks were plentiful and the cocktails were great!the resort itself was lively with fairground rides and shops on the sea front.we would recommend this hotel to anyone!

Room Tip: book a pool view room
