“Worst Holiday Ever!”
Reviewed October 23, 2009

We have to strongly disagree with the other reviewers about the Carina. The staff were the most unfriendly and unhelpful we have ever come across. On arrival we were given a studio room although we had booked a one bed apartment. When we queried this at reception the girl just shrugged her shoulder and said that there were no one bedroomed apartments available and that the manager was off and not answering her phone so she could do no more that day (not the best start!) We asked if she could tell us when one would be free so that we knew how much to unpack, she stared at the booking screen and looked gone out - telling us that she did not know as some of the rooms were privately owned and she did not know what the owners had planned - we would not believe that a hotel did not know the availability of the rooms from one day to the next!!!. We had to stay in the studio for the first night with noisy neighbours playing loud music which we had to report to reception. The next day we were told that a 2 bed apartment had become free. We moved to this apartment later that day and felt that we could now begin our holiday (how wrong we were). We were in the 2 bed apartment one night the next day we went out at around 3 pm - we saw the reception may times before we departed. When we returned at 9.30 pm we found a note in our room on the kitchen counter informing us that 'due to unforseen circumstances we would have to move room again' as you can imagine we were not pleased. We went down to reception - the man on reception did not speak english, finally he managed to understand that we needed to speak to the manager. He rang her and she said she would be at the hotel in 10 mins. When she arrived we asked her why we had to move again and why they had not bothered to inform us in person - she said that out bath was leaking and they needed to fix it - we could tell that she was not telling us the truth. This went on for about 1/2 hour and she still maintained that the bath was leaking - eventually we asked her to call out rep - he eventually told us on the phone the real reason for the move was that the owners were arriving the next day!!!

Of course were very cross that we had been lied to and when we told the manager this she laughed in our faces and said 'I am sorry about the small lie'. We refused to move and said that it was their problem and that they should not be hiring out rooms that they can not guarantee are available for the duration of customers stays. They also did not seem bothered that they had informed us via a note left in our room!!!

Unfortunately the next day we did have to move (again) we were worried that the owners may be angry with us and that there could be some conflict - the reception watched us carry bundles of clothing etc out of one lift - across to the next block - into another lift - to the next room. We got not help and no proper apology.

On a more general note the rooms do not have any pots and pans and hardly any crockery and cutlery - when we asked for some the response was - a gone out look and the explanation that people to not usually cook in the room (although there is a hob - so why have that installed then!) Eventually we were given 1 frying pan which we had to sign to say we had had! The fridge is a minibar and is in no way adequate for self catering. This would not usually bother us but we are vegetarian - and would just like to let other veggies know that Bulgaria has no veggie options - we never usually struggle to eat out when abroad.

In view of the lack of food available to eat out and the lack of facilities available to make any outselves!! - we tried to fill up at breakfast time - the girl who waitressed at breakfast was terrible - she had one pace - SLOW! If there was food there were not pots/ cutlery etc. If there were posts there was not food - they served cereal but no bowls to put it in and usually no milk. When you asked for anything you could tell it was too much effort for her to be bothered. The overall breakfast organisation was terrible but they did not seem at all bothered.

Sunny Beach itself was awful - like Blackpool gone mad! - You couldn't walk out at night without golf buggies, rickshaws, mopeds, cars, scooters etc beeping at you down a small promonade - You have to pay to use the loo even if you have used the bar/restaurant and they have a habit of keeping you change - saying that they think its a tip when you ask them (sometimes as much as 12 levs) so be careful of this.

We are not complainers usually - however we have never experienced such rude and unhelpful staff and we did at the Carina and would certainly not recommend it to anyone or return again! It was such a shame as overall the location and room sizes were the best we have ever had - this however would not sway us to make a return trip!

We just returned from our 5 day trip to Sunny Beach, Bulgaria and i wanted to leave a comment while my memory was still fresh.

The rooms very spacious, modern and well equipped with mini fridge, a kitchen with a stove, utencils and glassware provided for people who did not want to eat every meal in the many great restaurants on the strip. Breakfast was great and included eggs, cheese, salami, fruits, juice. Each room has a terrace overlooking the Black sea. The staff were young and friendly and the room was cleaned daily. There is a lovely pool and fully stocked beach bar located in front with prices as good as (if not better) then most bars on the beach. The hotel is located right on the beach which is very convenient compared to many other hotels which very located across the busy and dusty highway in the back.
The hotel is located at the end of Sunny Beach strip which was a great advantage due to loud music played late at night from many bars and discotheques on the beach strip. BEWARE: noise is a major issue if your hotel is located across from a bar which plays music every night until 3:00 a.m. This is the case with many venues on the beach. Carina Beach was at the end of the strip so noise was not a concern.

The beach was sandy and cleaned daily, water is warm and the weather was awesome. There are many paid activities on the beach so you won't get bored. The beach chairs and umbrellas were expensive to rent every day so we recommend buying an umbrella at the supermarket on the beach. The cost to buy is the same is renting for one day.

I recommend Carina Beach hotel. We are a young couple in our late 20s / early 30s.

Zdravayte! (Hello). Well, what can I say. My travelling companion and myself booked the Carina through Balkan Holidays without being able to find any real information about the place. As a result, we were rather apprehensive about going there, especially as it was our first time in Bulgaria and we had no idea what to expect. To arrive there and end up in a HUGE lovely 2 bed penthouse (5th floor) apartment (A502) was unbelievable.

I shall now attempt to give you a run down on Carina and Sunny Beach in general.

Apartment
Upon arrival at about 3am (last drop off) we went up to the penthouse (5th floor) via a very glitzy and fab lift. The apartment did smell rather musty (especially in the wardrobes) but that is probably because we were one of the first to use it this year. (A bit of air freshener later and it was much better.) Cracked loo seat, which wasn't visible to the naked eye but nipped at the buttocks(!) was rapidly fixed by us with a strip of elastoplast! (I am sure it will have been replaced after we left.) Water leaked from under the bath when we had a shower but we just put a couple of towels down and the problem was solved. There were no pots / pans for cooking but not a problem for us as we had no intention of cooking anyway. I am sure if you wanted some they would provide them. Brand new kettle, great little TV (a couple of channels in English including a cartoon channel - apart from the news), rooms carpeted and best of all, the sea view. Situated at the quieter end of SB and away from the 'boom boom' of the centre of the strip. Best location as far as we are concerned. BEWARE however, the curtain pelmet is not fixed securely with screws and did actually fall off one day when we opened the curtain! We easily fixed it back up (it just slots in) but if it had fallen on our heads I dread to think what damage it would have done. Just make sure you open the curtains gently! Maid service every day and loads of clean towels. We found our beds very comfortable with decent pillows and duvets. Not double beds though - 2 singles pushed together to make doubles. Not sure if all apartments have the same arrangement. Bedroom 2 has venetian blinds so not great for somebody who needs complete darkness - take eye patches:-) The fridge by the way, is a mini bar fridge, stocked with a few drinks that are reasonably priced. Not a good fridge for proper self catering but enough to keep a few cans and a couple of bottles of wine / water in.

The Pool
Excellent but small with a little kiddie pool within it. Not for 'olympic style swimmers' but great to cool off in. Loads of sun beds and there are pads available for comfort. Usual step ladders into pool, so not great for people with knee or hip problems. Pool bar was deserted during the day but always staffed from about 10am until about midnight. No food at the bar, just crisps and ice cream. (No problem though, as loads of eating places in close proximity.) 12 or so tables that each sit 4 people were next to the pool bar and you could eat breakfast there, or inside the building. Unlike some pool bars the music was not blasting out, it was much quieter. (They will also make you English tea if you want. Not easy to get apparently.)

Breakfast
Hmmmmm....ok. So, this is maybe not the best thing about staying at the Carina but hey...things could be a lot lot worse. Cold baked beans, cold sausage, salami, cheese, fruit, cakes etc. (Beautiful little blueberry muffins.) We only managed to get down for breakfast once (ends at 10am) but I am sure if you really wanted something different they would try to make it for you.

Reception
Small area staffed by one girl at a time, both of whom were fabulous. Not only were they friendly and smiled but they were also beautifully presented, wearing a maroon uniform, similar to the colour of the apartment building. Safety deposit boxes are here (not in the apartment) and I think they cost 6 leva a day. Just down from reception, is a lovely seating area with plants, sofas and a flat screen tv.

Staff
They are all absolutely excellent. Janet (Zhanetta), one of the pool bar girls is absolutely fabulous and for a Bulgarian speaks very good English. We had lots of fun and laughter with her and miss her already. If anybody reading this is going to Carina PLEASE PLEASE say hello to her from Lyn and Susan and if you want to make her laugh say to her that Lyn says 'I am not interested'. (It was with regard to the football.)

Sunny Beach
Hmmmmm....the reason we chose this resort was purely and simply because we had not been to Bulgaria before and felt that somewhere we could fly to from Stansted that was a little commercialised and therefore used to tourists, may be the safer and better option. OH MY GOD...not only is it vast (it goes on and on and on) but as somebody else has written on here, if you like Blackpool you will like it here. It really was too big and too commercial for us and way too loud in some places. In my opinion, the centre is great for English people who like to hear English/American music and like the chance to party 24/7. Having said that, I won't knock the place because we had a superb time and were fortunate to meet some fab people - Germans, Scots, Welsh, English and of course, Bulgarians. Also, the beach is very very nice, the sea appears very safe to swim in, there is sand into the sea (as opposed to rocks) and the beach is cleaned every night. Mini golf is everywhere, there are loads of inflatables to buy, there is a 3d cinema, you can hire electric golf karts and/or bikes to drive up and down the strip, 'happy trains' cover the whole area and buses are very very cheap. Loads of supermarkets, some of which stay open 24/7. If you smoke, cigarettes are extremely cheap. We bought 1 packet of Bulgarian ciggies for £1 !!

Restaurants / Food
If you eat at the STAR INN, DO NOT ASK FOR SCAMPI. It was reconstituted bits of sea food, not scampi as we know it and basically disgusting. They know it is not good because the waiter was profusely apologetic but there was no refund even though I only ate half a piece! The only 2 restaurants we can recommend, are the fish restaurant at Helena Park hotel (expensive but beautiful) and a little Bulgarian place just across from the front entrance of the Carina called Summer Garden / KIKI - if we remember correctly. (Opposite (to the left ) of Juzni Noshti). Fabulous little find and good value e.g. beautiful omelette for 2 leva (75 pence). Up the strip, you can also find Indian, Chinese, Italian (especially pizza) and that famous international cuisine - McDonalds! The chicken kebabs sold on the street, are also ok.

Bars
Shipka hotel bar (next to Shipka hotel on main strip and close to Victoria Palace) played the best music as far as we were concerned. All English - unfortunately for me as I would have preferred Bulgarian - but at least it was varied and catered for most tastes. One night they had a magician and I 'volunteered' (!) to have a sword pushed through my neck. The kiddies in the bar loved it...but maybe a little disappointed that there was no blood and that I survived:-)

Using Toilets
Unless you are eating / drinking in bars / restaurants, you have to pay 50 stotinkis to use the toilet (about 15 pence). Some places even charge 1 lev. So make sure you always have some money on you!

Muggings / Prostitutes / Gypsies
I have read about some problems English people have had with regards to the above but we didn't see any problems at all. There are however, a fair few security guards around and about the place. We felt very safe but then we did not go to the Lazur end of the resort at night, which we understand is where the clubs (including strip joints) are.

Trips
We didn't do any as were only there for a week but friends went on the BLUE MOUNTAIN trip and said it was awful. Most of the time was spent on the coach with not enough time for any sightseeing. The visit to the glass factory didn't happen. Instead, they got taken to the glass shop! The cable car was not free....and even though not much time is spent off the coach, the trip is definitely NOT SUITABLE for people with walking difficulties. Also met a couple who had been to Khans Tent. They raved about it and said the 3 course meal was beautiful. (Can't verify that, as we didn't go.) Nessebar also is supposedly very nice. (Again, we didn't get there so can't comment!)

The coach back to the airport & Burgas Airport
We were due to be picked up at 12.50 to fly back to Stansted. At 1.20 still no coach! We then re-read the board and apparently if the coach is 15 minutes late you must get reception to fone the transport company. We eventually got picked up in a mini bus at 1.40 by a driver who had seemingly forgotten us!!! The airport is absolutely appalling for people with walking disabilities as there are stairs to everything - even the toilets. Very small duty free area so don't rely on getting your souvenirs there. If you are flying Balkan Holidays to Stansted you will go home via Exeter, which makes it a 5.5 hour trip - be prepared. Food on plane (both ways) is a cheese or ham roll. Cheese seems to run out first so if you are at the back of the plane you will get a ham roll! Best to take your own food on board. (No TV on board, so kiddies will need toys / books etc.)

I could write loads more but...enough is enough:-)

Have a fab holiday and I hope you enjoy the Carina as much as we did. If you wish to know anything more, please feel free to email me. Dovijdane...

  • Liked — The staff (fab people), the location, the room, the view, the cleanliness, the pool, the quietness within the apartment complex, the lift(!), the closeness of the sea and watching the birds fly in and out of the nests above us
  • Disliked — The small fridge, the dodgy curtain pelmet and the dodgy loo seat(!)
