We were en route from Colombo to Galle for our honeymoon and decided to spend the night at Mt. Lavinia. Arrived in the dead of the night to a warm welcome by the caretaker. The room was cozy, tasteful and pleasing, the bathroom was in perfect condition. The bed was a gorgeous four poster. The rest of the house is very serene and classy too. There is a lounge area right outside the room which was completely ours to enjoy coffee the next day. And the dining table right beside the garden is lovely. We had the best egg hoppers here for breakfast. Would return just for that. Basically, its a good property for a pit stop, or just to spend a day or two relaxing. Nothing much to see around.

Room Tip: We were on the top most floor in a private room (I think the honeymoon suite) with a 4 poster bed.

This is a small intimate hotel at a reasonable price in a suburb of Colombo. The welcome from the couple who look after it are lovely. The breakfast was delicious - ask for hoppas for breakfast and let them cook you a rice and curry. Sri Lanka doesn't have menu-speak thank goodness. But what arrives when you order rice and curry is a beautiful array of small flavorsome vegetable dishes with one having fish or chicken curry. The wide sandy beach about 5 minutes walk away. The beach is great for jogging, strolling and observing life in Colombo. There is a place for observing the local fisherman selling their catch. The people of southern Colombo walk on the beach for exercise. The train line is close by too. It is about 45 mins to central Colombo but that was OK by us. My advice is get a cab as the polluted jams are quite unpleasant on a tuk tuk.

Room Tip: Rooms vary but all are clean and simple - a good sleep

We had a fantastic time at Mount Lodge. We loved the architecture and character of the house, but more than anything the hospitality and service shown from the hosts Gamini and Padmini was exceptional. Breakfast was fantastic with fresh fruit and coffee. The location is great, out of the bussle of Colombo and walking distance from nice resturants and the beach. Hope to return again soon.

Even if Mount Lavinia is not in your plans, this is the best introduction to Sri Lanka. We were planing to stay one night to get used to the climate and then continue southwards. Instead we stayed three nights and one more on the way back to catch an early flight.

Stunning house, loved every minute of being here, low key friendly hospitality, very accomodating of our little girl, with a modern portacot. Great residential area with a laid back community feel. Oh, and the in house chef was the best! I miss those Hoppers. Thanks Ben and family.

Room Tip: Get the top floor to yourselves, its like living in a tree house. fine for toddlers and kids.
