We found the hotel impressive on arrival & the location beautiful but overall the experience was not great! The facilities were run down and were in desperate need of refurbishment. The prices charged were for a 5 star hotel but it certainly did NOT deliver a 5 star experience. We stayed and visited several hotels whilst in Sri Lanka and this would have been the BIGGEST disappointment. There were 23 of us from Australia for a wedding and I dare say none of them would go back to the Mount Lavinia Hotel. Trying to arrange anything from car hire to paying an accounts was a drama, the bathrooms attached to the pool area were in a dilapidated condition and the room air conditioning was a hit & miss affair. Breakfast was lovely and the staff there always helpful.... maybe they should work on the front desk!!! The rooms were very clean and a good size. We had only one young fellow on the desk who we did find helpful..... pity we did not get him all of the time... he spoke very good English as he had lived in Australia..

Room Tip: The is the older wing have high ceilings, timber 4 x poster beds or the new section has rooms that are the same as most hotels in the world.

I read a book set in the Mount Lavinia area from the 70s which sent me to discover Sri Lanka a year ago but ever got to Mount Lavinia.

On the 11th day of our 14 day stay we came to the Mount Lavinia Hotel. The location is absolutely beautiful.... the beach is absolutely beautiful... You can see the City of Colombo from the Hotel. It's steeped in history and it's fantastic. The pool terrace is nice. The waiters around the pool make eye contact with anything but you!! The waiter we had was brain-dead.

Our room was OK. All lamps and dark furniture reminiscent of the old days which is lovely. But it's some things really let it down. It was very small. The ceiling in the hall of the room was falling apart. The telephone in the room was FILTHY and two light bulbs did not work, which to be honest, you wouldn't worry too much, but this is THEE Hotel of Sri Lanka history...

Then we get to the restaurant. We had a menu in the room. Food looked great. Was looking forward to dressing up for one evening as we just do guest houses normally. Went down to dinner only to find it was a BUFFET. I was so disappointed and annoyed. Where were the tables with the menus we had seen earlier?? My partner was starving so just steamed into the Harvester - sorry, the buffet and Mount Lavinia, and I searched for a waiter and asked why there was no menu and where was this food. People were just walking around not knowing where plates were or anything.... Total organised chaos!! Eventually, I was told that I could sit at a table and a menu could be brought over. I was bloody livid by this point as my partner had eaten his dinner... I had lamb cutlets from the menu and it was beautiful BUT I ATE ALONE... This was a complete disaster from that perspective.

Room Tip: Sit down at a table and wait for a waiter and ask for a menu. Otherwise you'll just end up with a buffet like any other hotel

Like many others - this hotel is used as a stopover on arrival or before departure. It is a little run down but absolutely full of character. I would have actually liked to have stayed a second night to make better use of it. The local beach is lovely and the facilities are adequate. At diner we experienced the best range of salads we have ever had in any hotel - they were superb. The staff, like most Sri Lankans were a delight and couldn't have been more helpful and pleasant. It's definitely on our return list.

Dear guest thank you for choosing to stay at the Mount Lavinia Hotel. A British Governor's residence forms the nucleus of the hotel which has expanded in size and style to the sprawling colonial palace it is today. Thank you for your lovely comments on our staff, cuisine and facilities. We are delighted that you have already made plans to spend another memorable stay with us in the future.

I agree with another reviewer that this is a FOUR star hotel, not a five. I would not make it a destination in and of itself. But we used it as a stopover after our long flight to Sri Lanka to rest up before heading south to Galle. It fit the bill perfectly.

We stayed at this hotel overnight recently since it's location suited our travel itinerary...and we weren't disappointed. The staff were helpful and friendly everywhere in the hotel and we were very impressed with the restaurant and food. Our room was large and comfortable although the bathroom was in need of a little tlc, although this didn't concern us since we only had a brief stay. We did venture outside of the hotel for a brief walk but soon returned since our presence attracted lots of Sri Lankan 'friends'.
