“A Relaxing Stay”
Reviewed March 29, 2013

I spent my last night in Mount Lavinia Hotel in Colombo after several days of journeys in various attractions in the eastern central part of Sri Lanka. I found it relaxing and peaceful by the Indian Ocean shore, where the hotel is located, to spend the day and night before returning back home. The service in the hotel is excellent from the reception, restaurant, housekeeping, and the swimming pool area. The staff were very warm, friendly, and helpful. My room was facing the ocean on the ground level which was a plus...a gentle breeze from the ocean. Buffet breakfast and ala carte are splendid from Sri Lankan, western, European and of course Asian. Wi-fi is everywhere for a fee but worth it! One can feel the Sri Lankan spirit and hospitality. They speak good command of English and communication is not difficult. The hotel is about an hour and a half from the airport but worth the stay. Hotel has transportation service to the airport for US$40.00 one way or you can take a cab which will take a while. I chose the hotel transportation for convenience, plus my flight back to California was late night. The room is huge with complimentary coffee, Ceylon tea, and mini bar. Hot and cold water pressure were excellent. Plasma TV has few selections of English channels. I am not a TV person and that's why I am satisfied.

Overall, I recommend Mount Lavinia for a short or multiple days of stay. They have concierge for city tour.

Room Tip: Request for room facing the ocean. Book ahead and the hotel is always full during tourist peak seaso...

Stayed 5 nights having stayed before a few years ago. This is a 4 star hotel but with lots of charm as you would expect. The food is good to excellent and the staff very friendly. Situation a little out of the way. Rooms refurbished and comfortable but a little rough around the edges especially the bathroom. This did not bother me but worth a mention. Take an ocean view if possible.

Room Tip: Take ocean view if possible

I chose this hotel on the basis of what I had read on this site. Different nationalities have different tastes and expectations and some things that would bother one person would not bother another.
I was pleasantly surprised with this hotel after reading some of the comments.
From the moment of check-in to departure I could find no reason to complain.
Staff were curteous, friendly and efficient. Our excellent room was on the fifth floor facing the sea with a beautiful view.It is worth paying slightly more for the view alone. The hotel has the railway line running behind it so any room at the back is likely to suffer some noise at peak railway times.
Food was very good with a wide choice. The beach restaurant offered a wide selection of seafood comparable to UK prices. There are several excellent restaurants within a short walking distance. All of these were chosen in the order recommended and I can only say that they all lived up to my expectations. The chinese restaurant on the beach was one of the best I have experienced and well worth a visit. The beach was clean but we tended to use the hotel pool and loungers when it was a relaxation day. On the days we went out we hired a guide, Rammuni with his driver Mano (Rammuni Tours). He picked us up from the Airport, helped us with currency exchange, stopped at a supermarket to enable us to stock up with some wine, took us to the hotel where we agreed our itinerary for the week and then left us to relax. The trips arranged were reasonably priced and excellent value. Rammuni provided everything we wanted and more. Mano, his driver, was very good and we felt completely safe in his hands. Journeys can be long and arduous because the roads and traffic are so bad. I would not wish to even attempt to drive there myself - it is just so completely different from the UK. Yala National Park is a must, get there by sunrise to see the park come alive with birds and animals, including, crocodiles, elephants, monkeys, wild boar, water buffalo and many other species.
Other places to visit include the elephant foundation (elephant ride included) and Siharaja Forest Reserve.
Mount Lavinia Hotel specialises in Weddings and there were three held whilst we were there. They did not interfere with our enjoyment of the hotel and it was interesting to view the proceedings from a distance.I would certainly return there if I visit Sri Lanka again. A perfect place to relax if you have had a hectic tour schedule. Approximately, 1 hour 20 minutes from the airport.

Room Tip: Choose a sea facing room otherwise you could suffer noise problems from the railway.

Brisk efficient friendly check in. Shown to our room immediately. A very nice bright room, with a fantastic sea view. Attentive staff, food was very good and well presented. The wonderful Mount.Lavinia beach was completely empty on the three occasions we visited it, we did not stay as it was a bit intimidating being the only ones there.
Weddings! Well I quite enjoy watching weddings but the Monday we where there, there was a lot of weddings. This was a bit annoying as during a meeting with our rep, a photographer pushed between my husband and self from behind, with another crouched in front of us, and this was not a quick snap and move on, in the end we moved outside the hotel just to have a quiet word with our rep, maybe this was a wedding too much for us!!
Mistakes do happen and we had two quite large mistakes on our bill, when pointed out to reception staff and then the manager a refund was quickly made and we were quite happy with the outcome, but as we left for the airport the next morning at 5.30am the receptionist asked if we would pay for the car taking us to the hotel, we had booked and paid for a package holiday which included all transfers, and our transfer was not using Mount Lavinia transport, this was annoying.
We have used the Mount Lavinia for a few years and have had no problems before. It is still a good hotel and well worth a stay.

Thank you for reviewing your recent stay at Mount Lavinia Hotel, we always welcome valuable feedback from our guests. Thank you for the wonderful comments mentioned about our staff, cuisine and overall facilities and your repeated patronage of our hotel. A British Governor's residence forms the nucleus of the hotel which has expanded in size and style to the sprawling colonial palace it is today. The famous romance rainbowed over the hotel one of the reasons why, perhaps, it is a favourite choice for lovers, weddings and honeymooners. We are truly sorry for the inconvenience caused to you during checkout and we would like to assure you that this will not be a repeat occurrence.

We have stayed at March 2013 . We choosen this hotel as hearing so much about its location and charm of being a Colonial Hotel . Overall ,Hotel staff is doing their best but two things made our stay quite unrelaxed. We have stayed on the old wing of the Hotel .(the right hand side building). Our rooms which we had two , were smelly and the badroom was dirty becouse it was so old ,looks like nothing has been done to improve the badrooms. Overall the colour of the towels were unacceptable (almost grey). One thing we were very pleased is the The fish restaurant on the beach . Excelent food , cold beer, very fresh great choise of fishes which you can choose. The breakfast was also very good and also the service and the view was great at the breakfast area.

Room Tip: Perhaps the room quality can be better on the new section.

One of the things we were looking forward to during our visit to Sri Lanka was lunch at the famous Mount Lavinia Hotel.
It all started off rather well with drinks by the pool with a lovely view out to sea. The building itself is magnificent and a strong reminder of the British Raj era.
So how disappointed were we when, having decided to go for the buffet, we loaded up our plates and sat down in the beautifully appointed dinning room to complete our experience only to discover just how average to poor the actual food was! Over salted under spiced and unimpressive cooking styles throughout left us looking forward to our departure.
What a shame!

We used the Mount Lavinia for an overnight stay on our arrival in Sri Lanka. The hotel itself and the rooms are nice but nothing special and could do with a bit of a tidy up.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the beach side seafood restaurant was very good we didn't get a chance to try many of the other facilities due to the brevity of our stay.
