This is a charming place to stay on fascinating Ibo Island.

Owned and managed by an urbane Swiss ex-pat, it's right on the water with a pretty garden with a swimming pool and lots of shady spots in which to relax. The restaurant offers good food - don't miss the lobster! - although the instant coffee with breakfast is a shame.

The whole staff is great, especially the two guys behind the very well-stocked bar.

With another lodge opening on the Island soon, Cinco Portas maybe needs to look at perking up its rooms (which are sadly lacking in anywhere or hang or store clothes) and bathrooms. But it's nonetheless a delight and Ibo is definitely well worth the long journey - plan to stay at least four nights.

We loved it so much we stayed for almost two weeks as a part of a 9 months trip around Southern Africa... Ended up trying most of the rooms, which were comfortable, roomy and very clean. Plenty of sitting areas with a great view of the beautifully restored house and the channel/bay, with a refreshing small swimming pool. The manager Benjamin was so lovely and helpful, and a great cook - the food was excellent. All the staff were great too, friendly and quick to respond. THE place to stay in the wonderful Ibo island.

Room Tip: The last room on the porch was our favourite. The room at the street entrance wasn't the best.

One of the best guest houses where I ever been in my whole travel experience. The house, an old portuguese house, is amazing. The swimming pool has a great view over a mangrove canal and the room are clean and comfortable. The breakfast is very good, absolute the best that I had in Mozambique. Ask for Sofu if you would like a local to take you on excursions.

We can recommend Cincas Portas for travelers who like to spend a couple of days on special Ibo Island. We stayed for 4 nights in this tastefully restored building and appreciated the food, the room, the nice garden for relaxing, the swimming pool and the beautiful views on the sea. At the time we visited this place they didn’t have hot running water but they provided us with a bucket of hot water which worked out well in combination with the cold shower. The rooms are not big and the bathroom is open but the atmosphere is good and very relaxing! The local staff, the manager and the owner are very friendly & helpful and they speak English and Dutch (the owner). They arranged a great dhowtrip from Ibo Island to Guludo.
If you visit Ibo island stay at least for 2 or 3 nights, it is a very relaxing island and there is enough to do. The town itself is very special with all the ruins of the old colonial buildings. We made a very nice walk through the mangroves and on the seabed (with low tide) to Quirimbas island which we think it is a ‘’must” ! But is also nice to go for a snorkeling trip to the sandbank and just walk around the village. If you like to have a nice drink with a great sunset, go to Ibo lodge! And try a lovely diner at “Panela Africana /the African pot” (combination between Mozambican & French food). The people on the island are very friendly and the atmosphere is very special (it is unspoiled by tourism) & far away from everything! (like most places we visited in Mozambique).

Cinco Portas is a place with some character on Ibo. We spent 4 nights there are the 2nd destination on our honeymoon in Mozambique and stayed in the 'apartment' which is the 2 storey building with a private balcony which looks out over the bay.

The room could do with some updating. The bathroom is a bit dark with no real natural light - an remember there is no warm water. The building is pretty old which does give a slightly musty smell to the room and the floor had a sticky feel so needed a good clean. The terrace though is a great place to sit and watch the changing tides and locals going about their day.

As others have said, the manager Benjamin really makes this place. He was more than happy to make the food we asked for during the day and spent a lot of time talking to us about Ibo, Mozambique and lots of other topics. The food is pretty good as well and Benjamin seems to have a big hand in that as well.

The bar is a lively place in the evening (as lively as it can get in such a small place!) and guests at other places on Ibo would often come to CP in the evening.

Mozambique isn't great for value but the food in CP is worth the money although the apartment is probably overpriced for what you get. .

Room Tip: The apartment room has good views but needs some updating.
