We spent 4 nights at Cinco Portas on Ibo Island, and found it to be one of the most unusual yet brilliant places we have ever stayed. Set in the middle of the derelict historical town on Ibo, the old colonial buildings have been refurbished beautifully, giving the impression of simultaneously being in Greece, Spain and Italy, but with crumbling architecture falling onto the beach, and local fishermen presenting their wares daily for the kitchen. The food was absolutely outrageous. One our second night the manager, Benjamin, approached us in his self-deprecating manner and quietly asked if we would accept being cooked lobster or crab and which would we prefer! The following night our friends at the hotel had expressed a dietary preference for gluten free food - not easy on an island where all the food is sailed fresh from Pemba or literally cooked that day. When the restaurant forgot, the manager uttered the immortal words "is it ok if i cook you your own lobster instead?". The rest of us had to settle for squid and octopus. The chefs are extremely well trained, and the food has a feel of tapas, but with every dish perfected and a one price buffet every night.

The rooms were comfortable and clean. The activities on offer were good value, particularly if you recruit other travellers to go with you. The sailing trip to a sandbank in the middle of the ocean is particularly stunning, as is the fact that at low tide you can literally walk across the sea to another island through the mangrove swamps. The town surrounding the hotel is fascinating and there is considered to be no crime due to the extremely small and isolated nature of the island. The manager stopped at nothing to be helpful and considerate, and at all times he emanated a genuine desire to make every guest as confortable as possible. This all added up to a wonderful stay and a place that for all sorts of reasons could not be more thoroughly recommended.

We spent 4 days in the hotel CINCO PORTAS this summer and our stay was wonderful, the hotel is very nice and the manager, Benjamin, made the stay on the island very easy. Ibo is a special place as well as this hotel.

We did not stay at this place, but visited a few times for food. The first time, both service and food were excellent. We loved it so much, we asked if we could order some for take-out; the manager, Benjamin, had accepted but with a grin, telling us "we normally don't do take-out" ... Still, he agreed and when we came to collect our order, he had forgotten ;-((

When we came back to have lunch the next day - since we liked the food so much - we were badly taken care of, if at all. We wanted to order the same food as the previous day, July 30th. We were now July 31st and the same guy now declares that "the menu has changed as from August 1st" ... It was now a set menu, and he also preferred giving priority to the guests who were staying there, which in a way made sense to us. Yet, the way we were welcomed gave us the impression we were really a hassle! So much for being returning customers who liked their food! We had to go and have lunch elsewhere in the end ... and the guy did not seem least embarrassed ...

When we made a last attempt, for dinner, the service was OK and the food amazing, except for a salad (cabbage and corn) that was past date, with a weird smell. Our friends at the table next to us, who we knew, got sick from it the next day. They had eaten the salad, not realising the odd smell, we had not ...

So, all in all, we would say : cute place, lovely setting, food CAN be absolutely excellent and we're sure, most times, it is. But the manager, Benjamin, at that time, was a true disappointment in terms of customer service. Being myself a Trainer in the Hospitality Industry, I can clearly state he did not meet the basic standards of politeness, warmth, courtesy and service.

The sad thing is, the owner, apparently a Swiss guy, was just sitting there, not even interfering .... What a shame, because the place really deserves a better management than that!

Room Tip: ... can't help you, we didn't sleep there ...

First of all I must admit I didn't stay here (made a booking with Kaskazini agency in Pemba for another hotel). Went for a dinner, lunch and breakfast here for a couple of times and must say the meals were simply delicious. And not only that, they even were presented in a sophisticated way with decoration and all which is so rare to find in a region so remote and poor as Capo Delgado. The breakfast was the best breakfast I had during 3 week travel around Mozambique with lots of fresh fruit, pancake, a selection of jam and honey... For lunch they even surprised us with lobster - a gratituity added to the usual full menu. Beat that if you can! Benjamin, the manager from Spain is also helping in the kitchen and adds the spanish touch to the meals. He is one of the nicest, most welcoming people we have ever met during our travels. Welcoming in a true, unpretencious sort of way. The whole place is very quiet, you can really take your time and enjoy the food without being disturbed by gazers and TV. All in all a wonderful experience, wish we had stayed here for a night.

I have just returned from one of the most fantastic holidays ever, thanks to Cinco Portas and the lovely hosts Therin & Peter. Cinco Portas is a little paradise on earth. Perfectly situated on the beach with a great view of the sea. In the shady garden you will also find a pool and from the edge of the pool you can watch the Ibo world go by on the little stretch of sand outside. In the garden there is also a very well stocked bar.
I stayed in one of the 3 rooms with veranda and ensuite bathroom, but there are several different types of rooms, all very reasonable prised and breakfast is included.

Why go out and eat when the food is so good at Cinco Portas? Try their lobster!!!!

One of the reasons that Cinco Portas is such a fantastic place, are the hosts Peter, and Therin, more hospitable and friendly people are hard to find, alway making sure that all is perfect, suggesting tours to other islands, dhow trips and arranging airporttransfer or other things you need.

When booking Cinco Portas, do your self a favour and stay for more then 2 nights, it's an absolute fantastic place, and even not being big, there is lots to do on Ibo and around.

Thanx Peter, Therin, India and Ian for making my stay special!
