“Wonderful luxurious retreat...”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

After 4 days on a yacht along the coast, we spent 3 nights at the Azura Quilalea which have been out of this world. The different areas of the hotel are very well integrated in the island and simply but nicely decorated. Rooms are exquisite, mixing comfort and privacy. The food is gastronomical yet very healthy. Staff is very friendly and eager to make your stay special. Snorkeling and diving is just amazing right from the beach, making it even accessible to kids.
All in all, best beach experience ever! We will be back !!

Total bliss. We might return and stay as long as our money lasts. When it is all gone, it will be time to walk into the ocean (we're seniors). All of northern Mozambique is currently undeveloped and has very few visitors. Go now, someday this will be east Cancun. We loved every minute.

Room Tip: All are gorgeous, beachfront, and private.

Villa #5 was a superb sunset villa. Plenty of space and all you need for 5 days of bliss. We felt totally alone and it was ever so quiet except for the birds and the sounds of the sea. One of the most relaxing trips ever, did a lot of reading and enjoying Kelly's fantastic delights at every meal. Crispin, our host, so to speak, did everything perfectly and was always there to see to all our requests. The walks around the island and seeing these most magnificent baobob trees was a highlight for me, as they are my most favorite trees in Africa. We will recomend this resort to all our future guests at our guest house. Thanks to the entire staff for a memorable holiday and we hope to be back one day. The helicopter transfer from Pemba was the very best start to the second week of our honeymoon. Kelly, the GM is the real star of Quilalea and we had a great time experiencing the hospitality of her team. We loved our sunset villa (definitely worth the extra money) and the food was very good at breakfast and lunch - especially the sushi! I just felt the food for supper could have been stepped up a little and it was busier in the bar and at mealtimes than I was hoping for. Secretly I guess I wanted more isolation and quiet from a private island and I felt it missed the hallmark of a true barefoot luxury resort, as there were so few individual touches. The beach villas were not fully occupied when we first arrived, just two other couples, but after 3 days or so, the island began to fill up with other couples, 3 males on a fishing trip and a young family, and I was sensitive to the bustle and busy-ness. What can you say? They tried to separate the tables around the restaurant, but I only felt the intimacy and isolation I hoped for on one evening when we were seated in a very magical place near to, but further away from the restaurant. My new husband would say I was being too harsh as we had been completely spoiled by our epic adventure in Africa up to this point, but overall I feel it was too fully occupied and the staff were too stretched for a luxury private island concept and so my experience is a little marred by that.

What an amazing place! From the moment you fly over the blue and turquoise waters in the helicopter to the moment you step out into the island and inhale the tropical aromas of paradise! We stayed in the Villa Quilalea for our first 5 nights and it was so luxurious - the room and bed is huge as is your bathroom and outdoor decking/lounge areas - you have so much space! It is so quiet at the Villa too that you feel like you have the island to yourself and the views across the bay are to die for. The plunge pool looks fantastic too though be warned we found it a little cool when we found the courage to jump in! We moved to a sunset villa for the last 4 nights of our honeymoon and again it was great, still secluded but you can now and then hear the other guests in the adjacent villas.

The food was fantastic - different menus every day - and everything tasted and looked fabulous! Nathan, H and especially Vita, our host, were also all fantastic and made our stay incredible. My partner dives and though the underwater life is not as colourful as some other places, the variety and the size of the fish were some of the best. We also did the night snorkelling which is a must if you snorkel - we saw loads of species and snorkelling in the dark makes it a much different experience! The coconut plantation trip is also good as it gives you a taste of real island life.

The island is beautiful, there are lots of different activities you can do if you so wish and the food is fantastic (we like our food a lot and expect a high standard and lots of variety - we weren't disappointed!), the weather was great and the absolute best thing was as we are both workaholics - we managed to completely switch off from everything for the first time in a long time and just completely relax! It really exceeded our expectations!

One tip if travelling to Mozambique - get your hold luggage shrink wrapped .

" Wow, you all look so relaxed" No-one ever says that to us, but they did when we returned from Quilalea Island after 5 days of delightful spoiling with our twenty something children and their partners. So relaxed, in fact, that its taken two months to get round to writing the review.
We have stayed at island resorts throughout the Quirimbas and the Bazaruto Archipelagos in Mocambique. Quilalea, under the watchful eye of Kelly and Paul, with activites arranged by Hilke was an outstanding experience.

The Island is small, the reef is right there - just walk off the beach and put your head down. There are lovely walks around the island, interesting birds, secluded beaches, great kayaking swimming and fishing.

Rooms are spacious with lots of different sitting and lounging areas inside and out.

Food was wonderful, fresh fish, salads interesting combinations. Our butler Robson, didnt miss a beat even though a group of 6 is quite large for this honeymoon destination.
It was my birthday during our stay and everyone went out of their way to make sure it was a memorable day from dawn to dusk. This is the only island in the Quirimbas that we would return to.

Room Tip: All the rooms are fantastic, just find out where the prevailing wind is at the time of the year you...

....this one!
So this is the island everyone should choose to play their desert island discs on! Well perhaps not quite everyone but certainly those who are happy to go a little further in their pursuit of the most memorable and wonderful of places. And for those that see the adventure in travelling as well as arriving then you need look no further. And what an adventure; from a small plane leaving the baking tarmac of the mainland to scud over the top of white sailed dhows plying their trade between the island jewels of the mozambique coast, followed by a perfectly scripted transfer by landrover and then speedboat to land on a perfect beach I can think of no better way to find your own piece of paradise. And the wonder is that from that amazing start things just get better. Kelly, Paul and the team take a remarkable place and make it feel even more special. You really get that feeling this is your very own piece of paradise, eating at a table set for two, in fact at a beach set for two with coral overhangs providing shade and hermit crabs the floorshow is something that would take anyones breath away. Each villa has its own beautiful location and glorious outlook over sea and sand - forget bora bora over water villas - this is how private island paradises really should be. The food is exquisite, no buffets of 100 dishes of little of note here, just great food cooked simply and well with the little touches that elevate it to the "you must try this" level. The staff treat you like old friends from the moment you arrive, and there is nothing that is too much trouble. OK you might find you have to wander to the bar to get a beer or two rather than calling room service but you'll probably bump into a couple of fellow "in wonder" guests there and end up staying for a chat anyway. You might find your table for dinner has to be moved up the beach a metre or two between courses because you dallied over the starter and the sea has come in a bit too far. That's the kind of fault that every guest should rejoice over. When your time comes to leave I defy you not to be racking your brain as to what it will take to find your way back to Quililea again. I can only hope that when we return that it has not changed one little bit.

Room Tip: Villa Quililea is breathtaking. The other villas I am sure are wonderful too - I really can't se...
