“Old, worn out, dirty”

Although renovations appear to be happening, the place was dirty, old and not well maintained. The redeeming qualities? Free Internet, water park for the kids and I guess we weren't sleeping outside. I see several of the problems all relating back to lack of attention to detail. Even in the newly renovated restaurant where the breakfast is held, there was dust on the the ledges and just an overall feeling to dirty. Plus it's so dark in that area, who knows if it's clean? The hotel was really busy, packed full of Canadians looking for a bargain in the States. I guess this is what I get for a bargain. Should have known better...

Our room was one of the very few that was renovated. The room did smell musty however. Also, immediately when we walked in the hallway it smelled of smoke. When checking out, one of our party was told that although there are signs that state it is a nonsmoking hotel, they still let people smoke. WHAT???? The staff at the pathetic continental breakfast was very rude and abrasive. We probably will not be back. The one thing that was good was the price, but like they say you get what you pay for. Hope once renovated this will improve this property.

After reading the previous reviews, I was hesitant of our stay at the Howard Johnson. However, I was pleasantly surprised upon arrival.

Yes, the outside needs a good update, our toilet didn't flush very well, but the room was clean, the staff accommodating, continental breakfast was decent - better than most. We very much enjoyed our stay, and would come again.

My husband and I had a reservation with this hotel for Saturday, March 24th. All the hotels in town were booked and since I didn't want to drive all the way from Denver to find everything was booked. Not having seen the Howard Johnson's name for years I had a bit of trepidation making this reservation but I really had no other choice. Arrived in Grand Forks, found the hotel, it looked quite a bit run down but hey, it was rated as number 16 in the city so how bad could it be? Well, after finally finding a place to park we were met with a line out the door for check in. OK, Elton John was in town - the reason why all the hotel rooms were booked - so we were ready to be patient. The line didn't move for at least 20 minutes as there was one totally overwhelmed desk clerk. A woman appeared from nowhere and started to assist. She was actually a customer waiting to check in herself and since she worked for another property with the same owner as HOJO's she was able to get things rolling. But wait a minute - rooms were double booked, people who had been assigned a room and given their keys were walking into their rooms to find there was someone else with the same room assignment. Whoops!!!!!! Finally we got to our room (it was empty) and found everything we had read about the place was true. I don't think there was an elevator and the tiles in the stairwells were loose and missing. There was NO ventilation, floor to ceiling windows were sealed shut, the temperature was stifling, the windows were fogged and mold was growing on the windowsill. We had to grin and bear it along with all the other Elton fans. We decided if we ever end up in Grand Forks again we will book a room in Fargo, make the drive to Grand Forks and return to Fargo for our comfort. This place is seriously run down and felt dirty and unhealthy, DO NOT stay here!!!! Stay out of town (or at a better property in town) and be comfortable.

Room Tip: Do yourself a favor and do not stay here!

What was wrong, a better question would be... what was right?

Dirty facility, new staff (completely overwhelmed...way under-staffed), old rooms, smokey smell, missing laminate on bathroom counter, kids learned of rash from pool water.

Doors don't latch and lock, bathroom doors don't shut, toilets run...

The morning breakfast staff was SO rude and thrilled to exlain at 9:32 that breakfast was over at 9:30. No offer to take a piece of fruit, just blatant rude behavior.

Do anything to skip this place!!

This hotel may be a little old but it was clean and they have been upgrading some of the areas. It was a great place to stay with children, the pool has a water slide and a play structure, and the hotel offers a really good continental breakfast. Lots of tables around the pool to sit if you're not in the water with the kids.

Room Tip: The rooms on the second floor were quiet.

Please update your hotel! Instead of enjoying our weekend we had to put up with a lot of inconvience. First off, the only reason we were drawn to this hotel was because of the water slide. Guess what-broke. When asked when it would be fix we kept being told by the end of the day. How can something get fixed if no one works on it. The game room ate all of our quarters with maybe three machines working. The fitness room had very bad equipment. I don't think I have ever seen such rust on an elliptical machine. The breakfast was about one of the most painful experiences I had to go through. We waited in a line where the food was laid out so poorly. You had to keep bumping into line to get things like toast or use the microwave. Then to make things worse the hotel staff waits right by the line cut in and out with food or asking if you have your breakfast ticket. The beds were horribly uncomfortable and you were lucky if your TV worked. The best thing was getting your bill to see that you were charged for a safe(along with a safe tax) that you didn't even use. I am a North Dakotan and I am embarrassed that we have a hotel this bad.
