Canad Inns Destination Center Grand Forks

I traveled to Grand Forks, North Dakota to attend a football game at the Alerus Center and booked lodging in the Canad Inn that is attached to the Indoor football facility. The Inn features three restraunts and lounges and a waterpark. If you are attending a University of North Dakota football game it is the perfect location. There is no reason ever leave the facility and there is plenty for kids of ages to do with attached water park. It is also a wonderful destination location for people in the upper midwest with all the amenities.

With all that said there are some down sides to the place. When you arrive there is no easy place to drive up close to the building to unload luggage nor assistance available. I had to park a half a block away and then "find" a luggage cart. The desk staff was friendly but only 1 person was checking in people even though it was crowded and other staff were behind the desk but offered no assistance. The rooms are nice but not quite what you would hope for considering the cost of the lodging. It was difficult to find a comfortable climate setting for the room as well.

The restraunt and sports bars where trendy and nice, but the prices were high by midwest standards. You could order pizza to your room reasonably priced but everthing else was expensive.

The water park was a major attraction with lots of families and kids enjoying the large facility. There is a fee for using the facility. The facility looked like a lot of fun with features for all ages of kids and adults.

Attending a football game at the attached Alerus Center is a definite plus! This is a beautiful facility with huge animated score boards at both ends of the stadium. There was tailgating galore pre-game with hundreds of people enjoying themselves. It is a great place to watch a game and an experience not be missed.

Even though there are some short comings with the Canad Inn and Alerus Center, the positives far outway the negatives. Grand Forks and the people of the area are indeed lucky to have such a wonderful attraction!

We went during Canadian Thanksgiving, surprisingly it didn't seem that busy. We checked in a bit late and ended up deciding to eat at Aaltos. Food was ok but the price was not! The staff seemed to be disorganized and rather overwhelmed even though the restaurant was only half full. We had vouchers for breakfast the next day and I was horrified to see that the only option was the buffet because it was a US holiday. I was expecting to have to pay another outrageous bill but we were told that the vouchers would be accepted - I was very appreciative. Again, the food was ok but I definitely would not have wanted to pay regular price. Staff again seemed overwhelmed, it seemed like there were only 2 wait staff for the whole restaurant and it was about 75% full.

The other issue during our stay was the elevator: the card system to access floors is a horrible idea and more elevators are definitely required! It seemed like we were always waiting and then having to stop on every floor.

Staff at this hotel definitely need some lessons in customer service; they didn't seem to enjoy working there and most couldn't answer questions regarding services. We were told that the waterpark wouldn't open until 4pm the next day when in fact it was open at 9am! No one seemed to care whether you had a current day's bracelet either - we saw many with the previous day's colour and even a few without one at all.

Enough of the griping though, the waterpark is the one thing that they do do right. It's a blast, has a lot of fun features and is enjoyable for the youngest to oldest guest. I saw one gentleman who must have been in his 70's enjoying the waterslide and rivertubing - great to see! The room was fine, beds were very comfy and we didn't hear any noise. Definitely come for the waterpark but there are better places to stay and eat.

Reserved a king bed, however bed was maybe... a glorified queen. Bed was comfortable with good pillows. Room smelled of stale smoke/musty and stains on the carpet. Really dislike "glass" glassware - always question if it is actually clean. Waterpark is great and pool nice (closes at 10) Avoid the Altos restaurant, food not worth the price charged. Will stay at another hotel next trip to Grand Forks - better values elsewhere.

First and foremost, this is by far one of the most fun indoor waterparks around. We have visited many of these over the years and this was impressive, and well priced for the experience.

As the name suggests, this is a "destination centre" and so the Canad Inns Grand Forks does pull in people for a whole variety of reasons -- such as the epic indoor waterpark and the conference centre next door. Due to this, I suspect their attention to detail and quality on the service side is a bit weak --- they no doubt have a strong draw/attraction no matter how mediocre the rest of the experience may be. On check out, the front desk didn't even ask if we enjoyed our stay, or sent us off with a "have a great day"... just took our key cards and walked off. Nice!

As far as Altos restaurant is concerned... the idea of a buffet within the same complex is great and a real attraction after a long day with the kids. The only problem is the price for dinner ($18.99 for adults) was a bit extreme for the limited choice offered in the buffet. The salad bar was great, but that's about it. We made the mistake of trying the breakfast buffet the next morning and, again, were disappointed by poor choice. I've seen better breakfast brunch buffets in church basements.

As for the hotel itself -- it's clean and the family suites are great. The kids loved their themed room. However, I found the amount they "hold" on your credit card to be a bit much (nearly $400) for a one-night stay. I mean, I don't think there are $400 worth of items in the suite that could be broken, used up, or otherwise removed. I would expect that sort of safety precaution from a 5-star hotel not a family-friendly Canad Inns. Perhaps they have had major problems in the past from rowdy guests.

Will we return? Yes, mainly because it's a lot of fun (the Waterpark, anyway) and the hotel itself was reasonably equipped and priced. We will not visit Altos again.

Room Tip: We were on the 2nd floor with a view of the waterpark (windows overlooked the indoor waterpark). The...

we booked a theme suite in this hotel on the thanksgiving long weekend, we found the room was fine and the bed comfortable. This hotel draws a lot of families because of its water park area therefore lots! of kids. Any time we were in our room kids were running and screaming up and down the halls, forget grabbing an afternoon snooze! we called the front desk a few times and for both days and nothing was done. This is definitely a family destination. In the morning we had come down to the restaurant for breakfast and the wait was quite long and the place was not busy, as well on the Sunday the only option was the brunch, i eat a small breakfast, paying for a brunch does not make sense. on Monday morning there was a line-up, 12 people, not worth the wait. it is obvious the restaurant needs more staff and more options.
Although it is a nice hotel and the theme rooms are nice we would not come back. we will be looking for a place without a pool!

We have been here twice and the pizza had hair in it both times. The restrooms had no toilet paper. The paper towel dispenser didn't work. And when confronted about the hair on our pizza they didn't want to refund it or make it right.

The service was average, not anything special. The front desk actually lost the package we were suppose to receive when we checked in. If you are staying for the waterpark then go. If you have a three month old this hotel is not the cleanest place to stay. I believe the hotel needs to work on the sanitation practices. I did like that the location of this hotel is convenient. I did not like the view of the waterpark and loud noises.
