What an amazing hotel. It is beautifully appointed in every way. I had read other reviews where people had said they weren't sure where to go to check in when they first arrived. I could not understand this because it is very evident that you simply go up the grand flight of stairs to the second floor. The check-in is like a desk in a room, with chairs in front of it for you to sit down and sign in. The very polite gentleman that checked us in then gave us our keys which are attached to polished stone with the number of your room and attached to the key with a leather loop. He then personally showed us to our room. It was jaw-droppingly beautiful - very large and spacious with a very high, wood -beamed ceiling with an iron support beam going across. Part of the walls are brick. Our room had a king bed with the lightest, warmest duvet, tasteful furniture, and a bose system with CD's of local artists to listen to. The entire hotel is filled with art from local artists and each room is designed by one of the artists. The lighting system was amazing.
We had robes and slippers to use and the selection of food, wine and liquors (and other thoughful items) in the room to purchase were very thought out.
Each evening they offer a free wine and cheese in the main lobby which you can enjoy there or take to your room. There is a free continental breakfast, but you can also order a different breakfast at a fee of course, but it is very reasonable. It is brought to your room exactly on time and it is plentiful!
We also ate in the HoDo Lounge one evening and the HoDo restuarant the next evening. The lounge faces Broadway and is tastefully designed and was a great place to spend part of the evening. We had a wonderful meal in the restaurant and were treated to two suprises to try out from the chef. One was a crab cake and the other was chocolate to end the meal. I can't say enough about the food as it was superb.
The hotel is located in downtown Fargo which is a very charming area with a lot of the buildings or stores still sporting the old-style signage. It was such a pleasure being away from the mainstream, mall area. Also, don't let anyone tell you that parking is a problem with this hotel. They have valet if you choose to use it, but you can park for free on the streets or avenues which alternate each night from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. which is more than accommodating for anyone. It did not cause us a problem at all.
There is a room-top bar with a spa and a fantastic roof-top view. The way the sun shone down on that space would be so wonderful in the sunmmer. Although the roof-top bar was closed for the winter, you could still use the spa if you wished. There is an adequate, beautifully designed (also with art) exercise facility in the basement.
I very much want to stay at this hotel again and I highly recommend it. What pure delight!

The Hotel Donaldson, and its restaurant are not in the AA guide, probably because it doesn't offer AAA discounts (it doesn't have to). Each room - there are only a few - is unique, and has paintings by local artists. The restaurant is very good too, especially as Fargo has lost at least one of its few really good restaurants. The rooms sell out quickly, so book well ahead (I didn't a second time, and had to stay in a Holiday Inn)

Room Tip: Just book ahead!

The beds were like sleeping on clouds, the art on the walls from local artists were inspiring...the room was wonderful and the hotel has a fine restaurant and a bar which would feel at home in Manhattan. One of Fargo's finest.

Room Tip: All the rooms we saw were top quality...

I enjoyed a recent 2 night stay in dbl queen room 3, my first time to Fargo and to this hotel and it will not be my last! Uppon arrival I was taken to the room by the desk clerk who gave me a quick rundown on the hotel and ammenities. The room had lights on, soft music playing, cookies waiting and the ice bucket filled up. It was these kind of touches that really make this place special. The room looks exactly like the pictures. It was warm, spacious and beautifully decorated with local artists. A booklet in the room offers information on all of the artwork throughout the hotel which was fun to read. The room was very comfortable and I can't say enough about the beds. My travel partner has been shopping for a new mattress set recently and after 2 nights in this hotel we tore the bedding off to check what kind of mattress it is (Comfort King, locally made, natch). She will be buying one. Yes, it was that comfortable!!
Room service staff were excellent. I can't say enough abour our breakfast room service attendant, Sophie. She brought our food, was cheerful, accomodating and seemed to genuinly love her job and visiting with us. When we saw her in the restaurant later in the day she made it a point to come to our table and chat.
I have never been to Fargo before this trip as it is about 700 miles from home however I will be looking for reasons to return if not only to stay at this hotel again. Seriously, if you are considering Fargo for any reason you MUST stay here!!

Room Tip: Rooms toward the main streets (1st and Main) may be a bit noisy for some as there are alot of bars a...

We stayed in room 13 last night and are still commenting about how great it was. We booked last minute, going through Fargo, staying just the night. We arrived late, about 9:30, but the front desk staff was very accomodating, helpful, and cheerful. The room was very good size and nicely appointed with a selection of local music playing on the Bose stereo when we walked in. We mosied downstairs to the restaurant for a late dinner and it was fabulous even though we arrived 15 minutes before close. The wait staff was very friendly and explained every course, and gave constant attention. There was an energetic crowd, but after tasing the meal, we wondered why it wasnt jammed packed in here!?! The rabbit in mole was a treat and my duck was served medium rare to perfection. Even though it was gusty and about 20 degrees we made it up stairs to the hot tub when we discovered it was in operation. Nothing like a hundered degree body and frozen hair. If you havent hot tubbed in the winter, definitely do it. We were glad it was open.
No kidding folks, we have been to a lot of boutique hotels, from San Fransisco to New York that try to pull off that "soho" feel, but what a surprise to find one that excelled in every aspect of it, in Fargo? Yes, Fargo. Oh, when you order room service breakfast in the morning, get the scones. We've always had the impression that scones should be dense as irish soda bread, as my wife says, but these we lighter and melted in your mouth. I fear that next time we try and book this place will be full, but we'll definitely be back.

Who knew you could find a boutique hotel with awesome food, a fun bar, and a rooftop hot tub in Fargo? I'm going to quit making fun of this city. It's about twenty below outside, but my bathroom floor is heated.

Had long wanted to visit Fargo, and booked at Hotel Donaldson. This hotel could easily be found in the hippest neighborhood in NYC-just wonderful. In fact, awesome! Very large room, dressing area, wonderful bathroom. Restaurant was great, too, although service was slow.
