I've stayed in hotels all over Europe, the United States, and even Africa, and the HoDo compares favorably with any boutique hotel I've ever been to (even in London, San Francisco, and New York). Each room features the art of a local artist (the three rooms I've stayed in were all fantastic). The service is wonderful and the feeling of intimate luxury feels much more expensive than it is. My favorite room is the one that has a bath that fills from the ceiling, but you have to reserve quite a long time in advance to get it.

Room Tip: Come before the evening wine and cheese. It's free!

I always look forward to visits to Fargo...the HoDo is a gem of a hotel - value price, for luxury. With only 17 rooms, make sure you reserve in advance.

I always stay at the HoDo, reserving my room the first day Fargo Marathon registration is open.

The only possible thing that could be better is an early marathoner breakfast (because during the marathon, everyone is there for that reason), but really - 100% fabulous.

The rooms are all very unique and the breakfast in your suite was a nice touch. We also took advantage of the roof-top hot tub. Very well lit and fun... and we had the whole roof to ourselves.

If you're going through Fargo - this is the place to stay. You can also save money by booking at the "Advance Purchase Savings Rate." It's non-refundable... but we just booked the same week and saved the money.

Visited Fargo, ND on my "see every state" tour, and stayed at the Hotel Donaldson. I was very impressed. The room was amazing - large, lots of natural light, very comfortable king bed. The staff was terrific. They had tea/coffee always available, and an in-room breakfast option (that I didn't utilize). The hotel is steps from some very pleasant Fargo sights, and a short walk across the Red River into Minnesota!

I did mention on check-out that you can hear (seems to amplify in parts of the room) the street corner traffic light (that is equipped for the hearing impaired). It didn't bother me, but it was noticeable.

There is a beautiful bar/restaurant on the first floor of the hotel (rooms start on the second floor) that always seemed busy!

A nice stay!

Room Tip: The rooms away from the street may have less noise, but the noise is minimal.

This is a beautiful downtown hotel with artsy, well appointed rooms tastefully furnished with tall windows. However, a group of us stayed there recently and found our room did not have adequate bedding, one of our credit cards were over charged. There were several other problems associated with our visit, none of which was a major problem, yet when we brought to the attention of the staff, there were no immediate resolution or recognition that these problems should not occur at a high end hotel like the Hotel Donaldson. I love the site, but I was not at all impressed with the management which means I'll probably be selecting a different hotel on my next vist.

We stayed at the Donaldson this past weekend, having driven down from Winnipeg. Our corner room on the third floor was superb. The room was spotlessly clean, very large and relaxing and with gorgeous glass artwork throughout. The staff were very relaxed and helpful, and the room service was very quick and friendly. We ate quite late in the Hodo Lounge and the food was fabulous. We asked if the chef could make some adjustments to the menu, which they did for us. The quality of the cuisine quite exceeded our expectations, and we thought the pricing was very reasonable. Although we loved our room, we asked the fellow at the front desk which were his favourites, and he gave us four or five room suggestions. (I think there are only 17 units in the whole hotel). We moved the car on the street a couple of times, but this was no big deal as ample parking was available. We will most definitely be returning this very relaxing and classy little hotel!

Seasoned travelers generally know what to expect when traveling to destinations in the outer reaches of sparsely populated states...sparsely "decorated" rooms, few if any amenities and dreadful dining.

Check into the Donaldson in downtown Fargo and prepare to be shocked. This boutique hotel in the heart of Fargo would be at home in New York, on the Mile in Chicago or on the Hill in San Francisco. The courteous. warm and efficient staff welcomes guests with a quiet professionalism. The all-suite property is modern, exceptionally clean and exudes comfort and charm.

The entrance is slightly confusing as registration is on the second floor, and that is not immediately apparent when entering from the street. The hotel bar and restaurant are on ground level and registration is up one floor in an elevator that is dimly lit. be aware there is no sign indicating where one registers. Those are the only negatives.

The bar is energetic without impairing conversation, high bar tables, couches and a well-done bar give guests plenty of options. The bar menu has a variety of choices from light fare to full dinners -- the items we selected were tasty and delivered hot.

Each suite is singular in design and decoration, mine was light wood, creatively lit and quite comfortable, the bed was exceptional. Cost for the room was less than $200 and dinner and cocktails in the bar for three came to $80. Valet parking was $15.

Should you find yourself in Fargo, ND, stay at the Hotel Donaldson!
