We visited Fryer's Cove winery in the off season and we were welcomed by Francois. It was a great experience, with some good crisp wines for the discernible palate. We ended up buying much more wine than we anticipated, but it should prove worth it when we get back home and enjoy some unique tastes that will evoke memories of a very special winery. Right next door is another community project growing oysters or abalone for the international market. This is an effort to curb whole scale poaching and restock the ocean with these molluscs. It is a little jewel on this west coast and well worth the visit. The roads are being upgraded, but even so it is accessible by a sedan vehicle. On the way we saw several little tortoises, duiker (a small antelope) and other wildlife on the road. It is a nice half-day tour from Lambert's Bay, with some more to see and do in the close vicinity to make it a day packed with sights to see and things to do. You won't regret a trip to Fryers Cove winery.

If you love superb cool climate Sauvignon blanc and Pinot Noir and a unique weekend getaway and experience then visit this tiny winery situated on an old fish factory jetty at Doringbay up the West Coast some 4 and a half hours drive up the beautiful West Coast from Cape Town. This winery is the closest to the Atlantic Ocean in the world!
Jan (Ponk) Van Zyl, his wife Renske, and Wynand Haman (wine making brother in law) have created a boutique winery of note, amazing atmosphere on the jetty and harbour where the uncontrollable Atlantic Ocean crashes against the walls whilst you sip and enjoy their stunning Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot noir.
They offer a simple but tasty lunch from their small local community inspired kitchen that brings addition relief from the hardships the local fishing community have endured over the years.
A winery and experienced not to be missed if you are taking that driving adventure up the West Coast and if you love great wines it is a "must"

This is the closet vineyard to the sea - with the cellar in the harbour, waves crashing while you are tasting the wines. The bay to bay sav blanc is fab, the hostess very friendly and knowledgable about wines and area.

The old fish fabric was taken over by Fryer's Cove Vineyards and now you can access the old harbor pier from the shop. Awesome. There is also a little gift shop and a restaurant which has its tables on the pier with the sea at your feet. What more do you want? My parents stay in Doringbaai (Thorn bay - yes that is why it is called Thorn bay - you cannot walk barefoot) so we did not order food, only tasted and bought some wine. There is also wine form other wine farms for sale (and to taste). Very near to the pier is the lighthouse and this is an awesome place to take excellent photos.

Best kept secret - restaurant and wine cellar on jetty in Doringbaai where you can enjoy 5 star Platter wines. You can also book the little building exclusively for a small party - the setting is authentic and we will return.
