“Appearances are deceiving”
Reviewed September 14, 2012

We stayed here on a trip through the great state of N.Dakota. I booked online for:

Guests: 2
Rate: AAA Rate
Room Details: 1 Queen Bed, Non-Smoking, Courtyard, High Speed Internet Access, Coffee Maker, Hairdryer, Iron And Ironing Board
Special Requests (not guaranteed): non smoking please
Room Rate Subtotal: $107.10 USD
Estimated Taxes & Fees Breakdown (additional charges may apply): Tax 9% $9.64 USD

We weren't sure what to expect. The photos online of the place look really nice, yet this was the a large metro area with a $100 room. We drove up to the Ramkota and went in the lobby. Looks quite grand in here. Nice tile lobby, excellent counter folks, coffee urns and snacks for guests.

Our room was waaay around back, so we drove back there, carried out belongings in and then looked at the room. The hallway was dark, but mostly due to the dark carpeting. We could tell in the hallway that this was an older hotel, although the lobby did not look this way.

Although we checked in about 5pm, there were still rooms in this section being cleaned.

The room wasn't as large as one we'd previously stayed in (at the same chain) but the bathroom layout was nice, sink separate from lavatory. Toilet was one that reminded me of old hotels and hospitals. Don't flush in the middle of the night for it is QUITE loud. Entered the room, realized we had a glass door/curtain for the otherside of the room. Television was an OLD style, 32" or so with the huge back.

We looked at the bed and "bookcase" on either side and wondered why there was a foot and half space behind the head of the bed . Came near the bed, hit my toes on the underside of the bed, lifted the mattress up to look at the bedframe cover and realized it was *much* too large for the bed itself. Then leaned over and realized the bed was a MURPHY BED! First thought, wow, second though, Huh, then: this bed is squeaky squeaky squeaky just sitting on it. Mattress was not 'smooth'. Husband rolled towards me several times in the night, I woke up each time I turned due to the 'squeak squeak' of the mattress (which was a couple inches thicker than a sofa sleeper mattress, but still the same comfortable quality-none).

Called the next morning for checkout (per slip under door--apparently no automatic checkout) and advised the front desk the mattress was quite squeaky and we coudln't believe it was a Murphy Bed.

Called tonight before posting. The manager said that all "courtyard" rooms are murphy beds. . No where in the online description (which I posted above) stated that it was a murphy bed, or otherwise. Very disappointed. [I thought the manager might say they were slowly remodeling rooms and hadn't gotten to that one, but she didnot]. I have no idea what other rooms look like, but know the this room was dated and disappointing, though if it was in a smaller town or had a different appearance in the lobby I'd not be surprised.

Received a voucher for a discount in the lounge for a drink and for a meal, but didn't use them.

Room Tip: Avoid Courtyard rooms, per Manager via phone call 9/14/12, all Courtyard rooms are Murphy beds.

We stayed at The Ramkota Hotel over Labor day weekend. As busy as it was the pool area was always clean, well stocked, monitored and FUN!! What a great place for adults and kids!! The rooms are wonderful with easy access to all of Bismarck. The staff was not only fun, but so helpful and considerate. I felt like I was at a relatives instead of a hotel. And let me tell u about Sunday brunch buffet - YUM YUM!!! BTW - thanks to Luke we had great service!! I recommend it for any event where u need great service and good people and FUN.

Room Tip: Poolsides if your doing a lot of swimming, but we had rooms on the backside of the hotel and they we...

It took a while to check in as the front desk staff was answering the phones as well as trying to serve guests. We had booked a pool side room. What a mistake! First of all the front desk didn't give us the wristbands for the pool so we had to go back for those. The pool area was very nice but there were several young teenage boys that kept pulling dangerous stunts, such as climbing the water slide support structures and jumping off. The other parents with young children were getting concerned and at one point a staff member turned off the water slide for a bit. This did nothing but encourage the teenagers to continue their annoying and scary behaviour.

There were people sitting at a table right outside our room who kept us awake with their noisy talking until the pool closed after 11 pm. The air conditioner kicked in every 10 min and stayed on for 4 min. (it was a long night!) and it made a booming sound everytime it started. Otherwise the room in itself was ok.

We were out of there early the next morning as there was no breakfast offered. I wouldn't pay the $16 extra for a poolside room again.

Room Tip: Don't get a pool side if you want to sleep.

Valued Guest,

Thank you very much for providing feedback on your recent stay with us. I apologize that the poolside room and water park areas were not a pleasurable experience for you and your family. We do our best to monitor this high traffic area so that all guests can enjoy a safe and relaxing time in the pool.
Also, we do not currently offer a complimentary breakfast as there is a full-service restaurant, Seasons Café, on property. By signing up for Best Western Rewards you will receive discount coupons for Breakfast. We also offer a “Breakfast for Two” Rate. This rate is a great value as it includes a voucher for two breakfast entrées and two beverages in Season’s Café.
Once again, thank you for telling us about your stay. We hope you will come back and visit us again in the future.
Thank you!

Our family stayed here for three nights on a family getaway and had a great time. Hotel staff was very friendly and accommodating. Free coffee in the lobby which was always available. Room was quite nice, good desk for laptop and good internet. Our room was closer to the pool (nice as this hotel is quite spread out) and the kids had a lot of fun. Lots of businesses close by - Kirkwood mall across the street, Dan's supermarket, Captain Jack's Liquor, and many others nearby.

Cons: No continental breakfast and restaurant prices seemed a bit high. This would be a huge selling point for many people, free muffins and juice go a long way... could easily add this in the lobby by the coffee. Also, we stayed mid-week and the pool got fairly busy but not as bad as on the weekends as I was told. Ran out of pool towels a couple nights although I think they did do a fresh load later on - long time in the dryer. Only over half the people wore the "mandatory wristbands" but since it wasn't the weekend I don't think they enforced it.

Room Tip: Ask for closer to the lobby and pool, since the hotel is quite spread out!

Valued Guest,

Thank you very much for telling us about your recent stay in Bismarck. We are so pleased that you enjoyed our indoor waterpark, and wireless internet service! It's also great that you noticed that we are conveniently located near the mall and restaurants.

We do not currently offer a continental breakfast. We do often have fresh fruit or pastries near our lobby coffee station. Also, I encourage you to book our "Breakfast for Two" rate on your next visit. For just a small amount more than our regular rate this is a great value as it includes a voucher for two breakfast entrées and two beverages in our restaurant, Seasons Café.

Thanks again for your comments, we hope to see you again soon!

My husband and I have stayed here a few times. Granted we never do spend much time in the hotel it is always a nice stay. It is usually a little spendy but it is right across the street from the mall. So we usually just walk across the street to go eat or go to the mall. So if we are there to visit friends and go shopping it works out best. The rooms are always clean. The last time we stayed we had a pool side room on the second floor. The kids in the pool got a little loud but it wasn't the hotels fault. They are not responsible for the guests behaviors. We sat in the bar and had a few drinks. Bar was nice and the service was excellant. I did feel it was a little dark for my liking. If I was 20 or 30 years older it would have been very hard to see. Overall our stay was very uneventful as usual.

Room Tip: A little pricy for what it is. But would work great for events and such.

We booked through Hotwire and arrived late after a long day or driving. The staff was not only rude but plain surly. I overheard one staff member rudely answer several calls about wifi, which ended up needing to be reset but he could not seem to figure that out. Our room's king bed clearly had two visitors roll around on it. The sink was full of dried pop or something else that took quite a bit of hot water to get rid of. No Internet that night or in the morning. When I mentioned the unclean room upon checking out the next morning, the young lady said that they were having problems with housekeeping. She handed me my receipt and did not say thank you. When I stood there dumbfounded and said, "so no apology either?," she shrank back, scratched her neck, and walked away. The clientele was scary. The outside doors were not locked and were completely accessible by the homeless-looking guy sitting with his head in his hands by the door we needed to go in. The lack of security was appalling. The fact that this was listed as a 3-star was a complete joke. We don't mind staying in 1- and 2- star places, and this could have been the most disappointing place we have ever stayed in. Breakfast not free.

Pros: Comfortable beds, nice shower. Location was decent; it was across the street from the mall.

Cons: On the first morning, we found a large black bug in the sink, which we proceeded to wash down the drain, but YUCK. The toilet was cheap and crappy. Breakfast, which I had expected would be free, would cost an arm and a leg... About $10 per person. Went to McDonalds instead. The second night, when we returned to the room, housekeeping had left all of the decorative pillows on the floor. For the insane amount of money this room cost, I expected a lot better.
