Owner description: The Dakota Zoo was founded in 1961 by Marc & Betty Christianson with the help of a host of dedicated volunteers. The Dakota Zoo opened its gates on June 3, 1961 on 15 acres of developed land, with 75 mammals and 23 birds, and 40,000 visitors passed through the gates that first year. Today, thanks to the continued support of members, visitors, donors and volunteers, the Dakota Zoo has grown to a 90 acre facility housing 600 animals, birds, reptiles and fish representing 125 species and visited by more than 150,000 people each year.

“Tigers are cool”
Reviewed August 5, 2013

The zoo is a good way to burn a few hours, especially if you have kids. Don't get excited to go here and you will not be disappointed. The big cats are cool and the otters are entertaining. It is fun to feed the goats etc.... This zoo does not really offer anything special. They do have "train" you can ride around in so you do not have to walk to all parts, but the charge a buck or two I think. All this said my wife and I go here a few times a year. Spring is the best because of the baby animals, but then you may miss some because of the weather. They are building a new primate house so that should be cool. It is Bismarck, what else are you going to do?

Bismarck has one of the best zoos around. Many new exhibits over the years. Beautiful setting and a good price for an awesome experience.

“Dakota Zoo”

The zoo has come a long ways since it's beginning. I took my grandsons this past weekend, first time I have been there in six years. Love the new improvements, will go back to see primate building when finished. Great place to take young ones and spend some quality family time.

This zoo is VERY well maintained and has lots for the kids to see! I've been told that it's better than a lot of them around the state!!

Use the membership. Makes a great place to go for a walk. Animals are cared for well. I would say most of the time the animals are out and able to be viewed vs other zoos I've visited the animals are inside seeking shelter.
