Owner description: The Dakota Zoo was founded in 1961 by Marc & Betty Christianson with the help of a host of dedicated volunteers. The Dakota Zoo opened its gates on June 3, 1961 on 15 acres of developed land, with 75 mammals and 23 birds, and 40,000 visitors passed through the gates that first year. Today, thanks to the continued support of members, visitors, donors and volunteers, the Dakota Zoo has grown to a 90 acre facility housing 600 animals, birds, reptiles and fish representing 125 species and visited by more than 150,000 people each year.

“Very pleasent local zoo”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

Not one of the world's great zoos, but a very nice place to spend a couple of hours. They currently have some of the animals from the Minot Zoo which is closed due to flooding. Very impressive big cat enclosure where you can get very close to the tigers (but behind glass!). If you are a member of another zoo, admission is free.

“Nice little zoo”
Reviewed September 15, 2012

The Dakota Zoo is a nice place to spend an afternoon or evening. The trails are paved and shaded. I love watching the otters play and going in the tunnel under the big cat exhibit.

It is also right next to Sertoma Park (great for a picnic) and the amusement park. So make a day of it!!

Great for kids, friends, or couples!

“A Good Time”
Reviewed September 11, 2012

Visited mid-week when the Zoo was quiet. We enjoyed the different exhibits and walking trails. The enclosures were clean. It was a very hot day and most of the animals were sleeping in the shade. My favorite part was feeding the goats and donkeys at the entry.

“Great zoo, lots to see without a lot of walking”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

Fantastic medium-sized zoo. A wonderful variety of animals in good habitats. Well laid out, so you can see everything without a lot of walking, and paths are easy to navigate. Our girls especially loved seeing the wolves, and hearing them talk to each other (howling). We spent a half-day there, then drove onto Glendive, MT. A great way to break up a long road trip.

“A Very Nice Zoo With Lots of Variety”
Reviewed August 24, 2012

Pros: Animals were very active and well taken care of. Had lots of variety of species. A good sized zoo.

Cons: Some of the reptiles needed bigger exhibits.
