“Really Small!”
Reviewed April 20, 2009

My husband and I aren't used to staying in 600 sq. ft. so felt a bit cramped. Being on the 1st floor was a plus for us because we could walk a few steps to the pool and walkway to the beach. The beach is fabulous! The noise in the parking garage was bothersome and on Monday, the jackhammer was going full force in the hot tub. They are really under construction and I wouldn't recommend visiting during the week for a while. The price is definitely attractive considering its Wrightsville. There were many families and several wedding parties. I would recommend it with reservation. Know what you are getting. Most units are individually owned so some are not as nice as others.

The hotel has great location, wonderful staff, but the water was AWEFUL. I dont know what the hotel can do but they need to either hound Wrightsville Beach Utilities to improve water quality or install a water treatment device. it was so bad when my wife was running a shower, the stinch permiated the entire place. I couldnt wait to get home and take a shower, also if you are going in the next couple of weeks be aware of renovations taking place. other than that, its a good place to stay, a bit pricey for the current situations there though.

Ask for a room at the highest floor available and on the sound (waterway) end. You will then have a great view of the ocean and waterway.
The living room/ kitchen area was very nice. So were the bedrooms.
There is also a large indoor heated pool which is a nice way to spend time . walk out onto the beach or if children are with you there is a small playground next to the outdoor pool. The staff is excellent.
Very nice restaurants nearby also.
Clean and quiet.
just remember---the higher up floor you get, the better ocean view you will have.
But then I guess most know that anywhere you go and get a room the first floor is always the parking lot outside your window!

Without a doubt, the best assets of the hotel are its superb location and oceanview. I was not happy to be given a room on the first floor which is the only one without an oceanview. The concern was compounded by the almost constant foot traffic and noise from the garage (car alarms can be most jarring). I was traveling alone and felt safety was an issue since there was direct access from the unregulated parking deck for workmen and people coming on the property.

I have stayed at the hotel many times in the last twenty years and while it remains a good choice in some respects (location, convenience, kitchen in room, oceanview) there are signs of management neglect. The hotel is not in good shape, but there is some renovation underway. The linens are of poor quality. The front desk is not professional or even very pleasant. Housekeeping was very spotty, never coming on two of the three days of my stay. Reporting this to the front desk got me a nod of acknowledgement and no more. The restaurant is open only for breakfast which was not an issue for me, but since the restaurant menus were posted in the elevators a number of guests concluded it was open for dinner and planned to dine on site. It would have been a good idea to either post the hours or remove the menus.

They have finally added wireless connections to the rooms so it is no longer necessary to rent the adapter box.

This was the first time I had used the fitness room and it was terrible. It is very small and smells badly. The equipment was not well maintained, there was no cleaning material there to wipe down the equipment, the equipment is jammed together very closely.

I will no doubt stay at Shell Island again, but I hope for some improvements specifically upgrading the linens, painting the rooms, cleaning the room furniture, significant improvement in the fitness room and a better service standard.

The front desk staff were very nice and accommodating. In fact they let us check out an hour later. The free breakfast has lots of great options. Great views of the ocean.

The rooms were clean and the kitchen was up to date. The furniture looked a bit dated but was clean. I do think they need to repaint. The bathroom trim was peeling. Having the half bath was a real plus.

I will say I did get woken up one night around 2am due to some loud guests walking to their room. Luckily it didn't last long but note that the bed room is by the walkway and it's very easy to hear everything out there.

After reading mixed reviews, I was not sure what to expect for our 3 night stay at Shell Island Resort. We've just returned and I have to say our stay was better than I expected. The staff was helpful and friendly! We stayed in a 1st floor room which had no view of the beach but had direct access from the room to the beach and pools - so no annoying elevators to deal with. The room has been updated and was very clean. There was a little musty smell in the room but not terrible. The free breakfast was good and the meals at Shelly's restaurant for lunch and dinner we enjoyed! We would definitely return to Shell Island.

Good location and expected more. Management was very rude and not very accomadating at all-would not let us stay an extra hour for a late checkout. Broken windows in hallways, dirty floors, not clean at all. I would not recommend it...
