“A gem; great off-season value!”
Reviewed October 17, 2008

Just returned from a lovely, but all too brief, stay at the Blockade Runner in Wrightsville Beach, NC. This is a delightful, moderately sized hotel, with many of the amenities of so-called "resort" properties - some for a fee, but everything one needs for a satisfying beach vacation can be had gratis. The staff were, to a person, gracious, accommodating, and extremely competent. All of my needs were met immediately and satisfactorily. The rooms are newly renovated and very nice. Beautiful views. Exceedingly clean. Outstanding flat-screen TVs and extensive channel selection. The overhead showers (different from any I'd seen before) are great, especially for removing pesky beach sand. The buffet breakfast is more than adequate, and served most graciously. The pool is nice, the grounds lovely, and the beach exquisite. This hotel is a real "sleeper" gem in the semi-off-season, especially if one is lucky enough to arrive during unseasonably good weather, as I did. I had a top-notch beach experience at a high-class establishment, for a thrillingly low off-season special rate. (I can only imagine what the price would be in high season... and my impression of the hotel might be very different if I had to pay it! But that's me; an inveterate value bargain-hunter. :-) )

  • Liked — value (off-season rate); room amenities; gracious and helpful staff; breakfast buffet; beach
  • Disliked — room fridge had no visible control or "how to" - food froze - had to call maintenance to adjust; pool not heated enough to be really comfortable

We enjoyed a 5 night stay at Blockade Runner. We arrived just in time to see a water spout or funnel cloud move across the ocean from our bedroom window! We have pictures. The next morning we enjoyed the buffet breakfast. Everyone was very helpful and the hotel was beautiful. The grounds were well maintained with outstanding tropical foliage, flowers, and grassy lawns. We enjoyed talking to the main grounds keeper. He loves his job and the family who owns Blockade Runner. We enjoyed the beach and we did some surf fishing. Our room was clean and very spacious! The view of the beach was breath taking and we enjoyed watching the sunrise in the morning. Families enjoyed all kinds of activities provided. We could say more but we'll just have to come back and take in what we missed this trip.

Thank you to all the staff at Blockade Runner and the owners for a much maintained hotel. The hotel was built in 1964...BEAUTIFUL!

  • Liked — Sleeping with the balcony door open to hear the waves crashing on the beach.
  • Disliked — Full breakfast buffet was included in room price - dining room seemed a little expensive for other meals.

I am back again to "eat my words" concerning my original post-"The Old Girl is Fading". "The Old Girl" has gotten Botox, Lipo, Restalyne and a breast lift"(ha!ha!). After two years of substandard service and cleanliness, I wrote a fairly scathing account of our visit from 2007. The Blockade Runner has always been a great place for me and my family but I was saddened by it's present state. I was contacted by the manager of the hotel and he categorically went over the positive changes and additions the business had made in an attempt to regain the "mojo" of Blockade Runner and our return business. We had already booked for this year, giving the business one last chance. We were a little apprehensive but determined to stick with the "Three Strikes You're Out" rule.

No strikes here! The place was immaculent- renovated rooms with new bedding, new flat screens, new bathroom fixtures. The halls had been renovated as well as the lobby. I was disappointed to see that the copper water fall sculpture designed by a local artist had been replaced with art glass tiles but that was only because we had been vacationing the summer he was installing the piece and our kids got a real kick out of watching him work. As always, the landscaping was green and luxurious. The landscaping always makes me feel like I should be home working in my yard instead of sitting by the pool, icy margarita in hand after a long,"hard" day on the beach. A real highlight was the Thursday night Harbourside Managers Reception and Harbour Cruise. Very enjoyable! The management staff went out of their way to make sure our family was being taken care of, although I saw lots of interaction with all of the guests. One night I requested extra towels on our way back in from dinner and the house keeping staff beat us back to our room and was waiting on us with more fresh, warm towels.

All in all everything was much improved and we are in fact returning for a few nights this weekend to celebrate...or should I say mourn our return to school for the kids and I. Hats off to the leadership of Nicolas Montoya along with Mr. St. Clair and Liz Ham. They did a great job and they have earned our trust back!

We just returned from 4 relaxing days at the wonderful Blockade Runner Hotel, an ocean front hotel that in some ways seems more of a resort. We found ads for it in North Carolina travel literature as well as on websites, but we made the decision to stay there while traveling up Rte 17 and knowing for sure that we had no interest in staying in overly developed Myrtle Beach. We called the Blockade Runner from the road and the hotel reservation agent tried to get us to commit to a three night stay with a reduced hotel rate, but we did not want to book it until we saw the town of Wrightsville Beach and the hotel itself. When we arrived an hour later, the front desk agent Bethany was willing to agree to the reduced rate offered to us by the reservation agent and that was the beginning of our wonderful experience. The hotel is lovely, and its manicured grounds, both bayside and oceanside could compare with any professional gardens that people pay a fee to visit. The room we took was an ocean front room and the bell hop quickly and efficiently helped us get our bags from our car and delivered them immediately to the room. He was very representative of every staff member we met in our four days there -- helpful, friendly, and efficient. Our room was lovely -- all done in whites and suggested a very tropical feeling. The room was spotless, and the bathroom had an excellent new walk-in glass shower with great water pressure. Ice is brought to the room whenever it is requested by a staff member at the front desk, and we requested it many times (giving a tip to the young college age students who serve as the well-trained staff), and it came promptly every time but once when they did not deliver it and we had to remind them later. The pool is very large, and there is a bar/food area with lively music playing. The hotel and pool areas were not crowded which we believe suggests strongly the downturn in our economy now. A fabulous benefit is the hot and cold breakfast buffet that is included in the nightly cost; it is served for 3 hours in the morning in the lovely dining room, and the foods were fresh, hot, varied, and delicious. Servers bring coffee and juice, and people serve themselves in what appears to be a special Sunday type brunch but is their usual brunch served every morning. We only ate in the dining room one other time, our first night there, and we found the dinner prices to be steep. The dining room was almost never full at dinner, and we think they would be better served to change the menu to a more popular 'family' oriented menu of entrees ranging from $10 - $20 and sandwiches/salads ranging from $5 - $10. Few restaurants are within walking distance of the hotel, and if the dinners were less "high end" and more family oriented, they would probably have more guests staying for dinner rather than seeking other places to which guests must drive. The hotel does offer free 'shuttle' service to restaurants and businesses within a five mile range which is really terrific given the cost of gas. Also, the hotel has a Thursday night Manager Reception on the bayside with huge comfortable Adirondack chairs for watching the sunset, and serving complimentary wine, beer, soda, and meatballs along with music. People can take advantage of evening cruises on a privately owned boat that docks nearby or kayaking lessons as well. One of the best benefits that I enjoyed that just happened to be occurring at the hotel was a yoga conference for two days, and the local yoga-sponsored workshop featured a nationally known 'yogee'. I was welcomed to join the workshop for the fee, and it was well attended and outstanding. Also, on Saturday mornings, the hotel sponsors a local yoga instructor who happened to also attend the special workshop and she incorporated some new ideas in the Saturday $10 workshop which was held on the well manicured lawn in front of the ocean. What a treat. The hotel has an indoor hot tub and work out room which are more than adequate but we did not use. Overall, this is an outstanding hotel with great service and breakfast in a lovely, small town. Town has a few stores and restaurants and is walkable from the hotel within 10 minutes tops. A Catholic church is just steps from the hotel and beautiful ocean front and bay front homes predominate. Wilimington is a 25 minute ride into town. Another area of very high end shops and restaurants is found in several shopping centers and areas on Military Cutoff Road, about a 10 minute drive from the hotel. This is a find; we loved it so much we extended from 3 nights to a 4th night -- and glad we did. We wil surely return.

  • Liked — beauty of the grounds; ocean front; firendly staff; great breakfasts
  • Disliked — no internet use available to guests; should offer a complimentary computer near the front desk for guests to check email

My husband discovered the Blockade Runner about 15 years ago when he began traveling North Carolina for business and we've been hooked ever since! We've always found the staff helpful and pleasant and willing to do whatever they could to make our stay enjoyable. We have never been disappointed in the quality of the housekeeping or the attention to detail.
We especially appreciate the landscaping around the hotel. The "back yard" is not just concrete and a swimming pool and then the beach, it is lush landscaping maintained everyday by full-time employees who know how to create beauty and a peaceful setting. Families enjoy the grassy area for a game of football, frisbee, or just playing tag barefooted.
I encourage anyone who loves the beach to give the Blockade Runner a try or a revisit if you haven't been there recently. You won't be disappointed!

Although we agree the hotel is aging the service and location simply made it a wonderful stay. The staff went overboard in being friendly, accomodating and courteous from the valet service, to bar service to resturaunt and even the beach chairs rental guys. What a wonderful stay!

We first came to the Blockade Runner years ago as a tourists. Our company, Grinnell Leadership has been giving montly Executive Development Seminars across the country for over ten years now using many different Hotels for our events. For the past two years we have been using the Blockade Runner. Our clients love the experience they get at the Blockade Runner. The food so good it is always a great surprise, and the "hands-on" approach by the owners is a delight in a world of chain hotels. Since the renovations the feedback has gotten even better. The service is great. The location is the best beach location in North and South Carolina. With the view of banks channel on the west side of the Hotel with the sail and powerboats in their slips is beautiful. The cooling summer breeze along with the blue-green clear ocean water on the east side with the white beaches is absolutely breathtaking. Our clients from the DC area are amazed that it is only 30 minutes further than the Outer Banks by car to get here! Great jet-Airport makes it easy for our clients from other parts of the country to get here. Following our seminars our clients will bring their families back. A great place to get away or do work in a beautiful relaxed atmosphere with lots to beach activities to do. Also, the downtown area of Wilmington which is close by and its night-life cafes and Bistro style restaurants my wife and I affectionately call the best kept secret in North Carolina and the "Asheville of the East."
