Note: a bakery review, not a restaurant review!
Winston-Salem is famous for its thin, delicious traditional Moravian cookies. When visiting the city, I often want to bring a bunch of them back (often in tubular tins) as always-welcome small presents. But they are a specialty item, found in only a few places: Old Salem, Dewey's, and (the best ones) at Mrs. Hanes, about 20 minutes outside the city. So this review is about convenience. South Stratford is the easiest place to get to, Dewey's is open on a generous schedule, they stock a good selection of the cookies at a standard price, and they often have a few flavors on "2 for the price of one" sale.
Honestly, I think the hand-made cookies at Mrs. Hanes' factory (she claims to have the largest hand-made cookie factory in America) are exquisite (and Dewey's are just very good), but I can usually only enjoy hers by mail-order as it is a longish drive.
Advice: At Dewey's, be sure to visit the sample trays! They also have an ice cream/coffee shop that looks very appealing.
