Owner description: Discover Reynolda House, the centerpiece of the Reynolda Historic District in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Explore the restored 1917 mansion of Katharine and R.J. Reynolds. An orientation video, oral history kiosk and audio tours, included in your admission fee, provide a unique window into the family and the life they lived. Enjoy masterpieces of American art and special exhibitions in both the historic house and the museum's new exhibition wing. Shop and dine in Historic Reynolda Village. Then, stroll the formal gardens, greenhouses and woodland walking trails of Reynolda Gardens. The Wake Forest University campus, adjacent to Reynolda, is accessible by walking trail or by car.

The gardens at Reynolda House are always free and worth a good hour's visit. Admission to the house, with its rich history and beautiful art, is $10 ($9 for seniors), and a visit may last only an hour to an hour and a half. Still, even though both my friend and I had been there before, we paid again to get inside and considered the money well spent. Also, we both like the short documentary film shown in the modern part of the building where you buy your tickets. Knowing more of the history of the place makes seeing the home and the art work more interesting.

The home was very lovely. Really enjoyed the experience. The staff went out of the way to give detail to any questions we had.
Was not able to enjoy the grounds due to rain but plan on a return trip soon.

The Reynolda House Museum of American Art houses three things: 1) a rotating special exhibition, 2) a permanent collection of some of the best of American Art, and 3) a museum of the house of Katharine and R.J. Reynolds. If you like American Art, or early-1900s architecture, it's worth a visit.

The special collection I saw was a set of pictures of trains. Amazing black and white photographs of trains (the "Trains that Passed in the Night: The Photographs of O. Winston Link" exhibition). The permanent collection houses amazing paintings (my favorite is "The Andes of Ecuador," by Frederic Church) and sculptures (my favorite is "The Rattlesnake," by Frederic Remington). The rest of the house is set up like a museum: roped off desks, plaques with details of what happened in various rooms, and glass encased clothing from the Roaring Twenties.
