“They make the best Martinis in town”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

This place is a gem. I don't usually get too excited about restaurants, but this one is so unique and special. The food is great, the desserts divine, the best martinis ever, and the service is perfect. I went in the Autumn and sat outside on the back porch on a beautiful day. It is a family run restaurant, where mom(the baker) and the kids (culinary school graduates) and the dad (manager) all work to make the simple act of eating a memorable experience. If you go at night, dinner is by candlelight. It is great for a romantic special-occasion meal.

“Very nice experience”
Reviewed December 28, 2013

My family of eight, had a very nice evening dinner at The Tavern. This was our second visit for dinner in a few years. The staff that greeted us as we entered the restaurant was very pleasant and our waitress was outstanding. Even though she ran her tail off accommodating tables, not once did she seem annoyed or flustered and she explained everything clearly and answered all our questions in a very courteous manner. The unfavorable to mention was that it took too long to receive our entrees, and when they arrived, the side foods on a few of our plates were barely warm. Also, the chairs were quite uncomfortable but they are they type they are to match the décor of the era. We were all pleased with the appetizers and entrees other than the food temperature matter, and also enjoyed the warm cider. We will visit again in the future.

“Not Just Once, but Twice”
Reviewed December 17, 2013

I started with the pear salad and had the filet-- both were excellent. I ate all that food and 2 baskets of rolls. The second night I had the duck-- wow-- Everything about the Tavern was authentic. They have bison and rabbit and all kinds of interesting food from the time period. I can't say enough about the place. The only thing I would suggest-- they charge for the second basket of rolls. It seemed kind of cheesy for a place that is so expensive for dinner--

“Back to the 1800's”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

We've eaten three times at the Tavern and have never had bad luck. The menu is great, including chicken pot pie, German sausage plate (the Moravian influence), etc. This last time, we were there for Sunday Brunch so the variety was even larger, with both breakfast and lunch/dinner items available.

The food was very good and the service was, also. It was excellent value for the price.

We had also eaten once in the evening by candlelight. Nice experience.

The waitstaff are all dressed in 1800's Moravian attire so it makes for a historic feeling.

Just a word of caution - the rest rooms are on the second floor and I do not know if there was any handicap accommodation on the first floor. You might be wise to check before going if that is an issue.

“Good Brats & Cider in Salem”
Reviewed November 29, 2013

Four of us had lunch here and while the food was good it was not great. The service was also fairly slow, but the waitress was very nice keeping us updated on our order. Two of us had the brats, one as a sandwich and one as a meal. One had a burger with gouda pimento spread which was very good, one had the pear goat cheese salad, which was also very good but only had one small piece of goat cheese. The brats were very good, but the sauerkraut was a bit bland. Mashed red potatoes also very good, the reuben was just okay. Two had their spiced cider which was very good, but a bit lukewarm. Overall a decent place to go for lunch in Old Salem if you are there but not to make a special trip.
