Enjoyed demonstrations and seeing the old buildings. The costumes of various occupations. Especially the bakery!

Nice place to visit in an afternoon. Didn't really care for the restaurant though. Many little nooks and crannies to look at

“Old Salem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

Old Salem is like a little slice of Williamsburg,VA. It is beautifully restored. Gardens are authentic colonial and interesting. The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Art (MESDA) has an excellent collection of early furniture and other articles. It has guided tours that feature knowledgeable guides and are very informative. I highly recommend a visit to Old Salem and its museum and gardens.

“Step into history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2012

Old Salem allows you to step back into the history of the moravians settlement in what was known as Salem in the 1700s and their lifes and struggles after coming from Germany. Walk down the cobblestone streets and take a horse drawn carriage ride around the square. Admire the beauty of the campus of Salem College. Go by Winkler's bakery and try moravian sugar cake or the famous moravian cookies (an addiction of mine...they are wonderful!). Spend a day immersed in history and take a tour of some of the historic homes, or visit the Moravian church. Shop in the stores and you will find hand made bees wax candles, and moravian stars. I would especially suggest visiting around the holidays as the decorations are beautiful and you can do what is called the candle tea. Its a tour as well as demonstrations of candle making and ends with coffee and moravian sugar cake. This is definately fun for the whole family.

“Boring”

Not enough signage, no informational center to get help, that we could locate. Not enough places open on a Sunday afternoon.
