“New visitors center”
Reviewed June 28, 2011

Just a note in response to the previous review. There is a new visitors center, very large and modern. There also is no longer a driving tour...you have to walk and it's about a mile. So it is not recommended if you are going with anyone elderly, handicapped, or in inclement weather.
The visitors center does have 2 gift shops, a candy store, and a video you can watch about Old Salem.

“pushy, less than candid ticket seller, a third of houses closed”
Reviewed October 24, 2010

what a ripoff! We paid $72 yesterday with our AAA discount for four adults to see about a half to two thirds of Old Salem becasue so many of the the houses and the church were closed and on a Saturday!. The lady ticket seller very agressively tried to get us to upgrade to the $ 99 season ticket so we would come back .She pointed out that it was already 2:30 p.m. and we would never see everything (well turns out we did because so many things were closed). We considered demanding our money back. We only live an hour away but we would never come back despite a more pleasant experience 14 years ago. Also, the Old Salem Center help did not seem to know what they had for sale. One shop worker said they did not sell Tylenol, turns out they did when we tried another shop. In short lower the price by half if you are going to have so many places closed. The houses were well done but the mgmt. policies and the help at the shops need to get real.

“Great Place to Stroll and Experience a Little History”
Reviewed July 7, 2010

My family and I spent the afternoon of July 3rd strolling the Old Salem streets. The location and buildings are beautiful. They had various activities and exhibits going on for the 4th of July weekend and it was fun to watch people dressed in historical attire. I highly recommend eating at the Tavern (that's how we started our visit), where the food is great (the pot roast and the german sausage were particularly awesome) at a great price and with a beautiful old home atmosphere. Skip dessert at the tavern and go get sweet cake at the bakery (complete with bakers dressed in historical attire baking for your viewing pleasure on an old-time oven). Old Salem is trully a place to stroll and relax, getting in a little history along the way. Do not expect to go for a lot of touristy activities or shops. If you do not have a lot of time, it is worth the visit to just walk around, without paying the entrance fee to see the historical sights. You can walk the streets and go to the tavern, the bakery and the gift shop without paying the entrance fee.

“Very disappointing”
Reviewed June 23, 2010

The Old Salem village has permanently closed their Toy Museum, the one thing we were most looking forward to seeing. Alot of other buildings were closed too and more than they told us when we bought the tickets. What was open was interesting (except for MESDA which was a boring, slow tour and you're not allowed in on your own and you must have a reservation for).
Overall, the price they are charging is way too high for what you get nowadays but it is an introduction to the Moravian society and their history.

“Interesting living history”
Reviewed June 1, 2010

If you enjoy the opportunity to learn, you won't be disappointed by Old Salem. Going I knew nothing of the Moravians or Salem but I learned on the visit. The Moravians were an interesting group of people, and listening to the guides we learned a lot. The toy museum was interesting and unique. We had the chance to listen to re-enactors at the print shop, brother's home, and gun shop. Not all of the shops were open on the day we went, but we still found it very interesting and informative. The tour ticket includes admission to the historic shops and the furniture museum (well worth the price of admission on its own.)
We ate at the inn and enjoyed that also.
We only wish that all the shops had been open, but we still had an amazing experience.
