We just went to Wilmington for two nights over the New Year's weekend, and Front Street Brewery was one of our intended stops. We love to check out local and regional breweries, and this was one of the best ones we've visited in N.C. It has a perfect combination of atmosphere from a lot of locals, good food, and some really amazing beers. Many places like this which put effort into a full restaurant and a brewery usually fall short on the beer quality, but that isn't the case with Front Street. We stopped in the night before New Year's Eve for a few beers and shared the "Famous Pulled Chicken Nachos." The chicken was shredded like pork, and marinated in some sort of sweet-spicy sauce similar to a Mexican mole. It was really well put together, with everything else evenly distributed on and in between the chips. I really liked the chicken, but it wasn't something my wife liked. On tap, they had some really special brews. Be sure to get a sampler, where you pick 5 of the beers. That's a great introduction. We are big IPA drinkers, so the special single-hop project Nugget Pale Ale (5.8%) and Papa Doble 2xIPA (8.2%) were spot on. They also had the Papa Doble aged in Bourbon barrels. Other beers on tap included Coastal Kolsch, Riptide Raspberry Wheat, Port City IPA, Dram Tree Scottish Ale, Amberjack ESB, Baltic Porter, and a Smoked Porter. We went back a second day on New Year's Eve to watch some football and try out the Cheddar Ale Soup, which is made with the Scottish Ale. Be sure to sit at the bar, which is one of the best pieces of woodwork we have seen. The bartender told us it was taken out of an old hotel in Greensboro and then pieced back together. We enjoyed the place so much, we left with a growler of the Papa Doble. On our next visit to Wilmington, we will definitely be looking forward to a return visit.
