I have eaten here a few times and have been very happy. While they don't serve all the exotic sushi rolls, but rather more of the traditional things, the sushi is very fresh and very reasonably priced. The Thai food is also very good -- an excellent duck dish, great fried rice -- and also moderately priced. The owner, Tom, visits each table -- nice to see a concerned owner. Will go back often.

We have been to Shukai twice for dinner and have been pleased both times. We ordered both sushi and Thai dishes, a variety of each. The sushi was rolled to order, fresh, authentic and terrific. The Thai dishes are also prepared to order, especially with reference to the level of heat. Flavors are authentic, light and true. Portions are not huge, but adequate. The miso soup was delicious. The owner was present both times we dined, and assured that all went smoothly with the meal. Though we had different servers on each occasion, I noted that the delivery of service was top notch, so this much be a special effort that is put forth by the owner, and it really shows. It was a pleasant and delicious experience overall.

We decided to try this new restaurant for lunch. We tried both the Thai and Sushi sides of the menu. Thai lunch (Drunken noodles) was authentic in preparation and full of fresh ingredients and the Sushi looked great and tasted even better. We met Tom the owner and he shared his previous restaurant experience in the Buckhead area of Atlanta. He was able to bring the sushi chef and other staff to Wilmington for this new venture. We were so impressed with the owner and the food that we returned two days later for dinner with friends. We were greeted at the door with a warm welcome by the owner. Appetizers (nam sod, a remarkable Volcano roll, and squid with sweet and sour sauce) were great portion size and packed full of flavors. All four of our dinner entrees were wonderful; we had a great time sharing plates around the table. The restaurant has a very comfortable sushi bar with high tables in a little bar area. The rest of the house is nicely decorated with asian motif, but the real story here is the authentic thai flavors coupled with some of the best sushi we've had in all our travels. Tom is an excellent host and chef - please go and make this part of your routine!!!!! We're going back there again tonight and bringing more friends.

We took a group of 12 people to Shukai on New Year's Eve for dinner and drinks and the whole experience was awesome. They were quite busy but that didn't interfere with our prompt service and the wait staff had a super nice attitude. After starting with a few nice appetizers (try the seafood soup or sashimi appetizer) we moved on to dinner. I tried the tuna symphony which was a tuna sashimi plate with the tuna served in 5 different ways or flavors. The presentation was really cool and the sushi was fresh and tasty. Among the very best in Wilmington. Several people tried Thai entrees including the Drunken noodles which were spicy good. They have a good selection of wines, beer and sake and also allow you to bring you own wine for a $10 corkage fee.
So, if you enjoy great sushi or Thai at reasonable prices this should be your next stop.
