“Just beautiful and a delight for even the true garden person”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2012

My mother is a member of several garden associations and has been a president of two.
she gives lectures. She says this is a beautiful garden and loved the experience. I am just
a trowel and home depot gardener and love it for its beauty. Love the serenity and attention to all the details to keep your eye motivated and inspired by its beauty. Great place to just explore and walk around even if that is all you do. A world of escape when you seek a beautiful peace.
it depends on the mood - one hour visit is enough for me-but the avid gardenr may want more time slotted.

“Great Departure from the Beach”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2012

Just across the bridge from Wrightsville Beach, but a world apart from the crowded streets and beaches. Large open spaces, well manicured gardens, sculpture, and a live oak that dates to the 1500's. Well worth the $5 admission fee.

“Both beautiful and instructive”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2012

This garden is a set of both landscaped and natural areas, with informational signs that enhanced the experience. Making use of the fecund soil, the gardens feature everything from 400-year-old oak trees to a butterfly garden. It also shows how delicate coastal areas are. There is also the magical Bottle Chapel--worth the reasonable admission fee in itself.

“An enjoyable, low-key way to spend an afternoon”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2012

My husband's family has had a condo in Carolina Beach, NC, since he was a child. As a couple, we have been coming down to the Wilmington/Carolina Beach area for more than a decade. During that time, we've hit all the usual attractions but had never visited Airlie Gardens. This current trip (which we are still on) overlaps with our 10th wedding anniversary. We decided to leave the kids with their grandparents and spend an afternoon at Airlie Gardens followed by a dinner date.

It was $5 entry per person, which is very reasonable. Parking is free. The ticket office is air conditioned nicely and there are large, clean restrooms in the same building. Also in the same building is a small gift shop with artsy "garden themed" items, postcards, etc.

We enjoyed the self-paced walking tour. It was in the mid-90's and humid, so I don't think we stayed out as long as we would have otherwise. Still, we liked seeing the 400+ year old oak tree (massive and gorgeous and awe-inspiring). The various gardens and walking paths were all pretty and unique. Our favorite was the Bottle Chapel, which is a must-see.

There are no surprises here: it's a garden. There are plants. You walk around and see the plants and garden sculptures. That's pretty much it. But the grounds are very lovely and the overall experience is relaxing.

I wouldn't recommend this for families with young children. Either they will be bored or they will ruin the peacefulness for others. I HAVE young children who are well behaved usually, and I say this anyway.

“Beautiful Garden”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2012

Airlie is a very well decorated and maintained garden. Lots of different gardens and art to view, along with some wildlife. There is a lot of walking to do especially if you get bumped off track and take the side road because the map is hard to read....
