“A dog friendly B&B”
Reviewed January 3, 2012

We have been going to the Camellia Cottage B&B for the past 4 years and have found the accommodations to be charming, excellent, and from a former age. Paula and Steve are the perfect hosts and Paula's breakfasts are to "die for". The delightful conversations that we all have over breakfast with the other guest is an added treat. We always take our dog where he is at home too. This is a 5 star place.

We arrived at the door of Camelia Cottage with a hug, a "Merry Christmas", and a greeting from Sparky, a friendly mellow dog. Our room with the fireplace, antiques, and treats waiting (for both us and our dog) was cozy and extremely comfortable. We slept 10 hours a night and woke to amazing 3 course breakfasts every day. Oatmeal pancakes and sausage one day, potato and spiniach fritatta the next...pretty good way to fuel up for a day of everything in historic Wilmington(you are in it!) or Wrightsville beach (18 minute drive) has to offer. Paula and Steve run Camelia Cottage with more fun than formality and it makes everyone relax. They love dogs (theirs and yours) and have an excellent knowledge of food and fun things in the area. We will be back!

Room Tip: The Crane Suite on the first floor is our favorite so far - most roomy, convenient for getting in an...

Our stay was wonderful at the Camellia Cottage! We had no problem getting in touch with and making a reservation for the night of Thanksgiving as we were coming into town to visit family. The cottage-keepers were very warm, welcoming, flexible and accommodating to our needs as we came with two elders who had specific needs and three dogs. The rooms were wonderful, with different themes, very comfortable beds, fireplaces etc. They even left little treats for our dogs! The cottage was very quiet as well at night and breakfast in the morning was to die for! They even made special arrangements for one person in our family who is diabetic, and as our family are big coffee and tea drinkers they had quite a supply and assortment for us. I just can’t say it enough how kind and welcoming the inn-keepers were. The house was wonderful, living room was comfortable for our elders, I only wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy it even more. We would certainly recommend Camellia Cottage to anyone especially those with dogs.

Room Tip: If you are bringing dogs who may be sensitive to people walking by your door we would recommend not...

This B & B is very well located. We parked our car and walked everywhere. We stayed in the crane room which is beautiful and very comfortalbe. The inkeepers were very friendly and helpful. My husband and I always felt comfortalbe wandering around the common areas and sitting in one of the comfortable couches or chairs. Fresh coffee was left outside our room door so we had the coffee immediately when we awakened. I would stay there again if we ever visited Wilmington again.

We spent a weekend there in the fall with pet dog and enjoyed every minute. The bed was very comfortable and the room nicely furnished with gas logs that added to the coziness. The house is clean throughout and nicely landscaped and furnished--felt just as comfortable as being at home while in the parlor reviewing flyers and getting advice on places to visit, dine at, etc. Can't overstate the delicious, multi-course breakfasts, made even better by much-enjoyed conversations with fellow guests and the owners. It was great to be able to leave the car parked and walk through a gorgeous neighborhood to the downtown area a few blocks away. So many great attractions and restaurants in and near Wilmington (beaches for example) that we plan at least one repeat visit and have no desire to try a different B&B--perhaps a different room for the fun of it--each has its own appealing ambiance.

Room Tip: Visit the site--there are 360 degree movies accurately showing the rooms to pick from. Recommend s...

What is not to like:
The bed and mattress were great and it was a really good night's sleep.
The 'Cottage' is real quaint and impeccable for its age of 120+ years.
The landscaping and garden is well maintained and beautiful.

Steve and Paula are great hosts and provide comforts over and above what is expected.
For example, not only are there freshly cut flowers around, but the fresh brewed coffee pot outside the room each morning is a great way to wake up.
Then, Paula's breakfast is one that negates the necessity of lunch.

Overall, five star.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Once home to artist Henry MacMillan, The Camellia Cottage is a high-peaked, Queen Anne shingle house featuring four guest rooms. A long veranda, painted by a local artist, provides a view of the lush garden of azaleas, magnolias, ferns and camellias. Here, great food, gracious service and a friendly atmosphere make for a relaxing guest experience. Greet each morning with coffee at your door and a sumptuous breakfast of fruit, homemade pastries and entree. Paula’s stint as a hotel pastry chef ensures a delightful dining experience. The Crane Suite features an ornate, metal bed, carved fireplace and vibrant color. Formerly the sun room, the bath and dressing area is filled with lush tropical plants. Henry’s Room, featuring a canopy bed and fireplace, reflects the stateliness found in two of Henry’s paintings hanging in the house. Jane’s Room is named after Henry’s mother and features floral designs and vintage photos complementing the four-post bed and fireplace. In the Tuscany Room, the golden glow of the walls and large windows make you think you’re in an Italian villa. Enjoy the fireplace from the whimsical iron bed or soak in the claw-foot tub with a glass of Chianti. ... more   less
