During our vacations in Eastern NC, we spent a day in Wilmington and we went to the Bellamy Mansion. It was very interesting to learn about the history of he people who lived there during and after the Civil War and especially about the African-American who worked as slaves. The self guided tour let you go in and around the property at you own pace. Definitely a must see in Wilmington.

The Bellamy Mansion is quite beautiful and really interesting structurally but is mostly void of furnishings. The Foundation does a good job telling the story of the house and the family that built and lived there. The intro film is well made, informative and not too long! Interesting architectural detail at top of the house to vent heat in the summers. The kitchens were my favorite. The wrap around porch is also lovely. Slave quarters in such close proximity to the house was striking.

We had read the article on Dr. John D. Bellamy in Our State magazine:

http://www.ourstate.com/bellamy-mansion/

and added it to our list of places to visit in Wilmington.

We were not disappointed.

We toured the grounds and the interior of the house, with an on-going narrative by a knowledgeable tour guide. The house is in excellent condition, with some period furnishings.

There is usually at least one arts exhibit at any given time. There may be a fee for this, in addition to the tour fee ($10.00) for Bellamy House. Currently, a Thomas Day exhibit is running, and will be there until December. For more on Thomas Day, please see:

Bellamy and his family were the equivalent of the Crawleys of Downton Abbey. Like the Crawleys, they lived well, but at the expense of a multitude of slaves and 'lower classes.' Bellamy's mansion was paid for with the sweat and blood of slaves working his turpentine camps, by any standards a brutal existence. An awareness of the vast difference between southern aristocrats and the common man of the time is helpful in appreciating the historical background as you wander the grounds and through the house.

We have a gallery of photos from a previous visit up here:

If you are in the Wilmington area, this is really one of those 'must visit' stops.

Interesting history on a family that came to prominence before the civil war and how they got it back after. Can see how they lived, the work their slaves did (not just the domestic servants but the craftsmen who played key roles in building the mansion itself). Save a few bucks and get the Poplar Plantation combo as that was a good historical experience too.
