We got what we wanted and more at the Fortunate Glass. This quaint downtown restaurant has wine tastings and excellent plates of cheeses along with meats and bread. WE also had a mushroom pizza that was excellent. They know their wine very well and give you advice on inexpensive bottles to very expensive ones. The wine was superb! What I liked best was the big front window with a view of front street activity while you are sitting there talking with friends. There is outside seating available as well. This was a great place to start an evening out in downtown Wilmington. It is within walking distance to many other restaurants, the river front and shops.

If you're visiting The Fortunate Glass be sure to sit at the bar and don't be shy about getting the bartender's attention. With so many local friends popping in for a glass and a snack, grabbing service away from friendly chit chat takes patience and persistence. It's well worth it, though, since you can't miss when choosing from the food menu. Don't forget to check out their specials which are often surprisingly gourmet for such a tiny kitchen. Once you've ordered, sit back and enjoy the wine because while the small staff is working hard to serve a frequently packed house, they'll not lose their cool to rush small plates to tables or to check back and ask how your brie was. Oenophiles will rejoice at the extensive wine menu. If, like me, you're a fan, but not a connoisseur, you may find the staff unable to come down to speak at your level. I haven't found a bad wine there, so either be brave and choose blindly or attend one of the wine tastings which are always popular. Come alone or with a friend only - the place is too small for groups.

Stopped in here last Tuesday (8/27) for a glass of wine while waiting for my wife to finish a meeting downtown. Hank, the bartender, was friendly and quite accommodating. I had a nice cheese/meat plate while drinking a nice South African white wine.

The plate was plentiful with fresh fruit and nuts in addition to the cheese and meat. They also provided plenty of bread to use.

I enjoy the ambience of this place....quiet music, no blaring loud television. I was able to choose whether I wanted quiet time to read my book or have a conversation with the bartender. I chose Hank who is very knowledgably of the local food and wine scene.

We started our evening by having a drink here. They had a wine tasting (every Tuesday evening ), the free pours were a very generous size. We ended our evening after having diner, by a night cap and some cheese/olives/bread!. Again the wine and service was wonderful.

The selection of wine was fabulous. My husband and i stopped in for a drink before dinner. It happened to be Tuesday evening so we had a glass of wine then wine tasted at 6 pm. The staff were professional and courteous.
The bar was quiet and quaint initially but became very busy after 6 pm. A nice place to start your evening
