My husband and I recently enjoyed a morning on the Cape Fear River with Capt. Doug Springer. His boat, the Wilmington Fast Cat, is a comfortable power catamaran, complete with covered seats, bathroom, and bar, equipped with food and drink. On this trip we went up the N.E. Cape Fear, passing first commercial, then industrial, to reach an area untouched by development. We were amazed at how wide, beautiful, and peaceful the river was. The only other people we saw were some crab fishermen, checking their pots. Capt. Springer is a warm and welcoming host, very knowledgeable in the history and ecology of the river. (His other job is as the Cape Fear River Keeper.) He pointed out osprey nests, kingfishers, and the sites of colonial plantations - even sharing some pre-colonial lore. We were delighted with the entire trip (a little over 2 hours), and would recommend it to anyone visiting Wilmington. We are locals, but had never seen this part of the river. What a treat! We plan to return for some of his other excursions - such as the N. W. Cape Fear, Carolina Beach, and Bald Head Island. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy natural beauty that can only be seen from the water.
