“"Like coming home"”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

My wife and I recently spent 4 nights at the Port City Guest House in Wilmington, during our first visit to the city. We stayed in the Green room, which is the only guest room with a private bath, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Sophie is a warm, charming hostess and made us feel comfortable from our arrival til our departure after 4 days. She prepared amazing breakfasts everyday with choices of almost anything you could dream up (waffles, eggs, grits, meats, pancakes, yogurt, fruit etc...) We enjoyed meeting other couples who were also visiting Wilmington for the first time and we found Sophie to be very helpful with local knowledge about real estate, restaurants and how to get around. She also provided wine and cheese and crackers in the afternoon and there were always snacks available.

Our room was very large and comfortable with plenty of storage. The house is quite old (historic?) and has the expected "character" of an old home. The one thing we found a little uncomfortable was the shower/tub combo which was a little difficult to maneuver and not leak water everywhere. There are fans in the room and the house is air-conditioned when it started to get warm one night. Free, secure parking is provided immediately behind the house via an alley driveway. The house is located on a main street which leads directly to downtown; about a 5 minute drive.

We really enjoyed exploring Wilmington and found it very easy to get around. People were very nice everywhere we went and we visited the downtown waterfront for dinner, drinks and an outdoor car show the weekend we arrived. It is a very dog-friendly town, especially downtown. We loved the proximity to the beach and ocean and the incredibly clean, uncrowded airport. We just missed the azalea festival which is reportedly one of the biggest draws for tourists, but there were still some beautiful remnants around town.

Overall, had a fun, relaxing visit and would definitely recommend the Port City Guest House to Wilmington visitors.

Room Tip: Green room has a private bath. The others share a bath off the hall.

This a charming old home very conveniently located to all of the festival activities. The house is beautifully decorated, rooms are comfortable and Sophia was a very charming hostess and great cook. Had a wonderful experience and would return again.

Room Tip: Green room has private bath.

My husband and I spent two nights at this elegant southern home. Each roon was a decorator's delight. Sophie is a gracious hostess with the pm cocktail hour a time to exchange the days events with other travellors. Spacious bedrom, firm matress,
which I loved and private bathroom down the hall.

Room Tip: Some rooms have bathroom inside, some privae bath down hall.

This is truly a hidden gem. Cozy clean well-maintained historic house close to downtown with parking and modern laundry facilities! What more could you ask for? How about a delightful host and innkeeper, delicious and abundant breakfasts, wine and cheese in the afternoons, good conversations, great books all over the place. Top notch!

Room Tip: Green Room has a private bath.

We stayed 3 nights for our wedding anniversary the last weekend in August 2012. Sophies hospitality was second to none. The breakfast was fit for a king that had a huge selection. It was served at a 10 people table and all the guests ate at the same time, we started at 8:00m and did not leave thtable till 10:00. Sohpie cooked each breakfast to order and no one had one complaint. She sincerly connected with each guest. That brekky set us up for the day to explore Wilimington and surrounding areas. A charming historic house built in the early 1900's with a huge front porch to sit on and enjoy an afternoon tea or coffee. We will definitely stay there again.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights over the recent Labor Day Weekend, for our wedding anniversary. My wife has been great at picking things for 28 years, and her selection of this lovely place was no exception. Sophie, the innkeeper, was delightul and made us feel like we were part of her family. "Help yourself to anything in the fridge!" "Go ahead and use the washer and the dryer." "Breakfast is served from 8AM until 10AM, but come later if you want!"
Both Sophie, and her assistant for the weekend, Anna, really knows how to treat their guests well...well, like FAMILY!

We were in the Oriental Room, and even though traffic was bustling by the front of the house on Market Street, we could barely hear anything due to the great windows. Breakfast was plentiful and made just how we wanted it. We have stayed at many B & B's, and this was the first one offering us a "snack" that could double as lunch: on our first day, it was a sliced roast turkey and cheese sandwiches...some desser, fruit and wine.

We highly recommend this "gem" and would select it again if we return to this neat city. Two days was not nearly enough time to do all we wanted to do!

My wife and I have stayed in several B&B's over the years and we are always a little skeptical of glowing reviews . While not on the waterfront (like some other more expensive ones we considered), its a quick 5 minute ride in an area of many beautifully maintained historic homes. This is clearly made up for by its charm and Sophie's wonderful hospitality. She is a bundle of energy who clearly enjoys caring and feeding her guests. We are already looking to go back sometime in the fall.
