“Yummy down-home comfort food”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

We stumbled upon The Basics on New Year's Day, mid-afternoon, and were pleasantly surprised to find brunch on the menu. I'm vegetarian, and ordered poached eggs served on lightly toasted baguette, with an artichoke sauce, and a side of sauteed spinach. The eggs came with a biscuit as well. All was totally delicious and filling. My companion ordered pulled pork and fried okra and said both were wonderful as well. They had good homemade iced tea, and didn't look askance when we asked for it unsweetened. We were too full for dessert. Everything was fresh and served promptly with grace and friendliness. The only thing that we found a bit off-putting was seeing the chefs work without serving gloves (we're from a state where that is illegal). All in all, this was a great dining experience, and we'd recommend The Basics highly to anyone -- except, alas, vegans.

“Amazingly good”
Reviewed December 26, 2013

This is the best "foodie" place I know of in downtown Wilmington. The food is southern-based, but done extremely well. Every time I've eaten there I'm glad I went. Also, they have a great "date night" menu that you really don't have to be on a "date" to enjoy. I've indulged with business associates. This restaurant is not to be missed when in Wilmington.

“Delicious and fresh”
Reviewed December 21, 2013 via mobile

We had a wonderful dinner at The Basics and it exceeded our expectations. They had a date night deal which included a bottle of wine, 2 apps, 2 entrees and 2 desserts for $60 total. There were no exceptions. We had the sundried tomato and pesto cheesecake and mushroom croquettes for apps, filet mignon and lamp chops for entrees and fallen chocolate cake and peach cobbler for dessert and a bottle of red wine. We were happy with all of it as well as our server.

“Serious Southern Breakfast!”
Reviewed December 19, 2013

We came with friends who suggested this place, and not only did our two children (ages 1 & 3) LOVE the blueberry oatmeal pancakes with walnut butter and syrup - but we LOVED the southern twist to everything. I would have never imagined that crab cakes or the "southern benedict" would be so good - every part of breakfast was enjoyable - even the side of fruit. Thankful for the great experience!

“Fresh & Yummy”
Reviewed December 8, 2013

We were hungry while shopping at the Cotton Exchange and The Basics was recommended by one of the shopkeepers. It was a great suggestion, and busy for a good reason - great, healthy, refreshing food at a fair price. We need to go back and try everything on the menu. Don't forget to check the specials.
