We stumbled upon The Basics on New Year's Day, mid-afternoon, and were pleasantly surprised to find brunch on the menu. I'm vegetarian, and ordered poached eggs served on lightly toasted baguette, with an artichoke sauce, and a side of sauteed spinach. The eggs came with a biscuit as well. All was totally delicious and filling. My companion ordered pulled pork and fried okra and said both were wonderful as well. They had good homemade iced tea, and didn't look askance when we asked for it unsweetened. We were too full for dessert. Everything was fresh and served promptly with grace and friendliness. The only thing that we found a bit off-putting was seeing the chefs work without serving gloves (we're from a state where that is illegal). All in all, this was a great dining experience, and we'd recommend The Basics highly to anyone -- except, alas, vegans.
